Youareresponsibleforyourownlearningandshouldbeabletodemonstratethistoyourmentor.Makesureyoucontactyourplacementareaaroundtwoweeksbeforestartingtointroduceyourselfandmakesurethey’reexpectingyou!Askwhohasbeenallocatedasyourmentor,yourshiftsforthefirstweek,anyspecificrequirements(uniformpolicies,parkingetc...)andwhere/whotoreporttoonyourfirstday.Ifyou’reafirstyearnewtoManchesterorinanystageofnursingcareerandhavetogotoatrustyou’venotbeentobeforeyoumayfindithelpfultovisittheplacementareabeforestarting;toplanyourtravelrouteandensureyoucangetthereontimeforearlyshifts.Youmayfindthetravelsectionusefulformoreinformation.

MakingupHours&WorkingNights/WeekendsonPlacement:
Itmightbethatyoufallillorareunabletomakeplacementforpersonalreasons.Aslongasyouhavefollowedthecorrectproceduretoinformbothuniversityandplacementofyourabsence,youcanmakethesehoursbackatalaterstage.Somestudentsmayprefertodoanextrafewhoursoneachshift,oryoucanarrangewithuniversityforanextensionontimeinplacementinexceptionalcircumstances.Formoreinformationonthispleasechecktheappropriateblackboardarearegards

placementhours.ThePracticeHoursofficecanbecontactedon01613067801andyoucanliaisewithyourAAabouthowyouplantomakeupmissedhours-butrememberyoushouldn’tworkahighnumberoflongdaystoaccruetimeoffby‘frontloading’yourhours.
GuidanceintheProgrammeHandbookoutlinesthatthereshouldbeaneducationaladvantagetoyouworkingmorethantheexpectedonelongdayperweekandoneweekendpermonth.It’snolongermandatorytocompleteasetnumberofnightsoverthethreeyearsbutyoudoneedtobeabletodemonstrateyouhavehadexposureto24hourcare,someareassuchasICUorA&Ecanbejustasbusyatnightsotherewillbeloadsoflearningopportunitiesonnights.Nightshiftsonotherwardscanalsoofferalotbutitmaybeanideatobringsomeworkinorwritereflectionsiftherearelotsofquietperiods.
Yourmentor’sroleonplacement:ThisyearseestheintroductionoftheGMSynergyprojectacrossGreaterManchesterinvolvingallfourHigherEducationInstitutionsdeliveringnursetrainingandkeyNHSTrusts.GMSynergyisbasedontheCLiP™model(CollaborativelearninginPractice)developedbytheUniversityofEastAngliaandaimstoincreaseyourconfidence,competenceandperformanceinpracticebyfollowingacoaching,ratherthanmentoring,approachtolearning.Thecoachingapproachtopracticelearningadoptsastrongerfocustowardself-directedlearningwiththeaimofdevelopingyourconfidenceandleadershipskills.Youwillbeencouragedtoleadyourlearningonplacementwithlessfocusonfollowingthedirectionofthementorandmorefocusonsupportingyoutoidentifyyourgoalsandobjectives,workingwiththe‘coach’whowillofferguidanceandcriticalchallenge.
Inthecoachingmodel,youwillbeallocatedanamedmentorwithanNMCrecognisedmentoringqualificationbutonaday-to-daybasisbe‘coached’byasuitablyexperiencedpractitionerwhoisnotnecessarilyamentor.Thismeansthattherearetimeswhenyournamedmentormaybepresentintheclinicalareawithoutactingasthecoach.Yourmentorwillberesponsibleforsigningyourhoursandassessingyourprogressagainstthelearningoutcomesbycompletingtheinitial,mid-pointandfinalinterviewswithyou.

AccountabilityandResponsibilitiesoftheMentor:
• Thementoristoremainresponsibleforthepatient/clientgroupatalltimes.• Theyarealsoresponsibleforliaisingwiththestudent’slinktutor(ULLorAA)inthefollowing
circumstances:o Ifthestudentdemonstratesunprofessionalbehaviour(asdefinedintheNMCCodeofConduct).o Ifthestudentfailstocomplywithlocalpoliciesandproceduresfollowingextensive
discussions/explanationsofthesame.o Ifthestudent,followingnegotiationwiththeirmentor,continuestofailtomeettherequired
targetsorobjectives.
ThisisoutlinedinthenewNMCCodeunder9.4;“supportstudents’andcolleagues’learningtohelpthemdeveloptheirprofessionalcompetenceandconfidence.”TheNMCguidanceisthatthestudentsspendaminimumof40%oftheirplacementunderthesupervision(directorindirect)oftheirmentor.Therefore,thestudentdoesnotneedtobephysicallywiththeirmentorfor40%ofthetime,aslongasthementorisincommunicationwiththerestofthestaffregardstheirperformanceetc.thisisanacceptableformat.Afewareasnowhaveamodelof‘teammentorship’whereseveralmentorswilloverseestudentstrainingasateam.Trytobeasflexibleasyoucanwithhourstoworkwithyourmentorasmuchaspossiblebuttheyshouldalsotrytoaccommodateyourneedsaroundshiftpatterns.
TrustsandPEFs:ThroughouttheBNurscourseyoumayfindyourselfallocatedtoplacementsacrossthewholeofGreaterManchester.Thefourmainboroughsforplacementare;Trafford,Manchester,TamesideandStockport.Placementscanalsoincludenon-NHSareasincludingprivatehospitals,hospices,andnursinghomes.It’simportanttorememberthattherearesomedifferencesbetweentrusts.Yourexperiencesbetweendifferenttrustsmayvary(forexample;differencesinEarlyWarningScoringSystems)soit’simportanttofamiliariseyourselfwiththetrustpolicywhenyoustartyourplacement.Guidanceonthiswillusuallybefoundinthestudentfileatyourplacementorviathetrustintranet.

FromSeptember2017,practiceassessmentdocumentationisnowavailableonlinethroughthenewPracticeAssessmentRecordandEvaluation(PARE)systemavailableatwww.onlinepare.net.PAREallowsyoutorecordallofyourpracticehoursaswellascompleteyourPracticeAssessmentRecord(PAR)onlinewhichincludesyourself-assessmentpriortostartingplacementaswellasyourinitial,mid-pointandfinalinterviewswithyourmentor.
PAREcanbeaccessedthroughanydevicewithaninternetconnection.YourPAREaccountwillbecreatedonyourbehalf,youwillsimplyneedtoactivateandcreateapasswordbeforegoingoutonplacement.WerecommendthatyoutakealookthroughPAREpriortostartingplacementtobecomefamiliarwithitsformat.Helpfully,thereareaseriesofguidesavailableonthePAREwebsitetoassiststudentsandmentorswithPARE.

Spokes:Aspokeisanopportunityforyoutospendafewhoursorafulldaywithanotherdepartmentlinkedtoyourcurrentplacement.Mostplacementsshouldhaveinformationofrelevantspokesinthestudentfileavailableonsite,feelfreetoarrangeyourownoutsideofthislistbutbeawarethatyoumentormayaskyoutojustifythelinkbetweenthespokeandyourhubplacement!
