Road Scholars Presentation2009 Science Olympiad

Summer Institute

Lay a blank sheet of copy paper vertical (‘Hot Dog’) in front of you on the desk.

Also, have your USGS Topographic Map Feature Key and the transparency overlay you made in Activity 1 available.

In the bottom right of the SE corner of the SW corner of the NE corner, draw a school.

Draw a primary highway 1 inch north of the school horizontally all the way across the map.

Name this road ‘Short Cut Road’

Draw a secondary highway about two inches south of the school horizontally all the way across the map.

Name this road ‘Puttygut Road’

Draw another primary highway just west of the school vertically all the way across the map.

Name this Highway Ravenswood Road

Put a rectangular building on the SW corner of the intersection of Short Cut and Ravenswood Roads.

The long side of the building should face east towards the school.

Draw two medium size circular tanks behind the rectangular building.

Mark a small point along Short Cut Road NW of the northernmost circular tank.

Place the center of your protractor on the point you made along Short Cut Road

Measure 40° and draw a Railroad all the way from the left side of the paper to the top of the paper.

Draw an orchard in the NW and SW sections of the SE corner of the map.

Draw a vineyard in the NE and SE sections of the SE corner of the map.

Draw two small rectangular buildings and one medium rectangular building midway between Short Cut Road and the Railroad Track. All three buildings should be on the west side of the Railroad.

Draw thirty houses in the SE section of the NE corner of the map.

Arrange the houses (small squares) in ordered 5 column x 6 row format.
