…. Weekly Newsletter for 2 May 2012 …. STUDENT CASINO NIGHT Congratulations to the Executive Student Council for running a great casino night for their peers last Saturday night. The event was a very fun and entertaining evening – thanks to all the families that provided prizes and decorations. Thanks as well to the student leaders and parents who gave of their time to decorate on their days off!
STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTIONS FOR 2013-2014 The election process for students interested in running for the Executive Student Council and Class Officers for the 2012-‐2013 school year will begin later this week. Students have received the paperwork on Wednesday, and need to submit their interest to Dr. Kenney by next week Monday. Speeches will be given on Tuesday, 8 May and elections will be run on Thursday, 10 May. Attached to this email are the criteria for running for these positions.
MIDDLE SCHOOL FUN NIGHT Mrs. Tammy Zgabay is running a Middle School Fun Night for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from area parishes; this event will take place this Friday, 4 May. They have need for the following items and are asking parents if they can loan them at this time. Items we need loaned: • Ping Pong table & equipment • Any type of indoor games that can be set up in the gym • Limbo bar • Disco ball/lights • Poker/black jack table Also, we need help from current JPII students to run the games and the dance and help with the evening. Please sign up on the counter if you can help!
LETTER NIGHT Our second annual Letter Night is Saturday, 12 May 2012, at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The concept of Letter Night is to convene on one evening as a school community to celebrate in solidarity all of the student achievement and activities at JPII. This is an evening for student academics, activities, athletics, and arts. By definition, students can ‘letter’ in a wide variety of student activities, and by definition, all families and students are invited to Letter Night. The school presents certificates and pins on that evening, but does not award ‘letters’ per se. If families are interested in ordering letter jackets or other chenille-‐based awards, they are free to do so on their own. (On 19 June, at the uniform fitting – athletics physicals night, the letter jacket company will be here to take order and place additions to jackets.) Parents and students, we extend an invitation to families to notify us if a student has earned an academic or student-‐activities based award outside of the school that we could include in the program. A local civic organization has awarded one of our students a commendation, and has asked us for the chance to present the certificate. Please communicate with me in the next week to see if an award your young person has received during this school year could be included. Thanks!
GUARDIAN PARENT EXECUTIVE BOARD The Guardian Parent Executive Board is continuing to take nominations (both from others and self-‐nominations!) for parents to serve on the Guardian Parent Executive Board for the 2012-‐2013 school year. Attached to this newsletter is the necessary information.
SCHOOL COUNCIL If you think you are interested in serving on the School Council for the 2012-‐2013 school year, and would like more information about this group, please contact Mr. Iliff at the school or Craig Zgabay, our current school council president, to learn more.
JUNIOR COMMISSIONING MASS Junior parents! Have you RSVP-‐ed for the Junior Class Commissioning Mass on Monday, 7 May 2012. We need juniors at St. Joseph’s Chapel at 6:45 p.m. Recognize that seating will be tight, so dress and plan accordingly. Please be extra careful when parking on the grounds, as the parking will also be tight. We will have a brief reception back in the school cafeteria to follow.
GALA PLANS The weekend in Today’s Catholic, we will be officially announcing to the Archdiocese our plans for the Gala in September 2012. We are excited to share these plans with the school community at large (our school council and gala committee have been working on this for the last five months as well). Each year, the gala seeks to honor notable Catholic leaders for their contributions to our faith, and we thought that, through this year’s gala, it would be fitting to tie in our observance of the 25th anniversary of the Pope’s visit to San Antonio. The honorees this year will be Monsignor Larry Stuebben, Sister Charlene Wedelich, and Robert Aguirre; they were the team in charge of organizing that visit in 1987. Our Mass and dinner event will be on Wednesday, 12 September 2012, starting at 6 p.m. We had hoped to hold the event on Thursday, 13 September – the actual anniversary – but the Archbishop is hosting a prayer event/Mass for vocations on that date. By hosting it on the 12th, he was willing to commit to supporting fully our event. As we have in the past, we will begin with Mass at San Fernando Cathedral (celebrated by Archbishop Gustavo and concelebrated by Bishop Cantu), and then move on to a dinner event at the Westin Riverwalk. This different from the last two years’. The feeling was that this venue was larger and nicer than the AT&T Community Centre, and thus would allow for us to do more with this event (and would not require as much decoration, and have more space). It is two blocks away, so parking and transportation will be a part of the planning (more than in year’s past). Some exciting developments as a part of this: • The official poster from the 1987 visit has been re-‐done, with our funding (through Knights of Columbus #4183) and includes our school seal. A draft is also attached to this newsletter and is now on our web site. We are running 1500 copies, and will be mailing a copy of the poster to every Knights Council in San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi, and Victoria. We will also be distributing a copy of the poster to every parish and Catholic agency and school in our Archdiocese. This will be our way of building consciousness of the anniversary and our school and our event in September. • As a part of the gala, we will be creating a commemorative program for the anniversary/Mass. Portions of the program will be a re-‐creation of the original Mass program (a 36-‐page booklet), and other parts will be a reflection/remembrance of the visit. In the back of the program, we will be selling ads/donation credits. • If you are interested in helping with this special event, please contact Mr. Iliff or Mr. Gagnon, through Mrs. Sullivan in the school office.
