Student as producer project

Externally funded. (£200,000.00 over 3 years)

Draws on teaching and learning strategy

Research already a key part of that

Students not always closely engaged in research

University Education

Teaching not about transferring knowledge

Ideas are far more important than information.

Need to help students make knowledge for themselves

So students work with staff to pursue research projects.

Or, if impractical, students are assessed on “research like” activities.

What we’ve already done

UROS – Undergraduate Research

Opportunities scheme. (Students get a

grant to work with academics on a real

research problem)

SCOTS – Students evaluate the work of teachers in disciplines

other than their own.

FED – Fund for Educational Development – funds of up

to £3000 for academic colleagues to develop their curriculum

along the lines of research engaged teaching

What do we plan to do (1)

Teacher Development: promotion

of research engaged teaching and

learning through existing PGCE

programme/CPD framework –

develop work done by SCOT

programme to support teaching, and other students

Learning Co-laboratories: One week projects involving large groups of undergraduate student (500) working in team of 10 with academic staff to produce a product of academic value based around theme of the co-laboratory.

What we plan to do (2)

Re-introduce UROS scheme

(Bursaries of £1000 per student),

work to be done over summer vacation

Re-introduce FED - £3,000

per project, as before, but staff expected to publish a paper

Festival of teaching and learning. : Involve whole university for

one day, in which staff and students will engage with research

engaged teaching agenda.
