Principal’s Pen
Hello everybody. My name is Sean Cole and it is my absolute pleasure to
act as principal at Taroom School while Ange is on leave. My first week
has been one of establishing connections and getting to know the
Taroom operational procedures. I have enjoyed working with the kids and
getting to meet the community.
I have been a principal and school administrator for over 20 years. My
most recent school tenure was as Deputy Principal at Stanthorpe State
High School. Prior to that I was the principal of Glen Aplin State School
for 12 years. I have also worked as principal at numerous small schools
in Western Queensland and the Southern Downs. I am currently working
for the Roma Centre for Learning and Wellbeing as the District Relieving
Principal. I get to work in over 30 schools in the South West. It’s nice to
be able to stay in one place for four weeks.
I have been very impressed with what I’ve
seen happening at Taroom School. The kids
are fantastic and the teachers are thoroughly
committed to what they do. This is a real credit
to Taroom School and wider community.
Having been in so many schools across the
South West, I feel quite qualified to make these
statements.
Grin and Tonic
Grin and Tonic is a Drama performance Troupe who were in school on
Tuesday. The younger students were treated to a performance while the
older students participated in workshops. The Year 4 and 5s did activities
around being confident. They learnt that the three things you need to be
confident are:
1. Be Prepared
2. Have Courage
3. Believe in Yourself
The students enjoyed the Grin and Tonic performances and workshops. It
was a fun way to learn some valuable lessons on self-awareness and
social justice.

Sports Trials
Last Friday 14 of our high school students attended the touch football trials in Miles. It was a very successful day
with most of the students in attendance finding a place in the squad or as a shadow. The students were a credit
to Taroom School and their conduct at the trial was excellent.
COVID-19 (Corona Virus)
A letter was sent home on Tuesday regarding the COVID-19, or the Corona Virus. The letter outlined measures
the government are taking to slow the spread of the virus, but also stated clearly that state schools are not being
closed. The Director General of Education is sending out information updates daily, based on the latest point of
truth information. We will be guided by his instructions and recommendations. You will know if anything changes.
Please keep students at home if they are unwell or exhibit any flu like symptoms.

Chappy Intro
Our newly appointed School Chaplain, Vicki Groves-Pearce recently graduated from Central Queensland
University with Bachelor of Psychological Science.
The role of a school chaplain is to provide social, emotional and spiritual support to students, parents and staff,
taking into account the specific needs of the school.
Chaplains provide support for a range of day-to-day matters affecting the school
community and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people. A school
chaplain is a safe person for children to connect with at school, providing a listening
ear and a caring presence. They care for students struggling with a wide range of
issues including: family problems, confusing relationships, friendship issues, peer
pressure, self-esteem issues, bullying and depression.
Vicki is employed by Scripture Union QLD which is an interdenominational Christian
organisation, officially endorsed by Education Queensland as an accredited
employing authority for school chaplains.
Chaplains run positive, fun activities for children and foster a supportive, caring school community. This service
is for ALL students, staff and families of Taroom State School and Vicki is on campus Monday-Wednesday each
week.
If you, or your child would like to access the School Chaplain please contact the Office on 46289333 or email

Grin and Tonic Theatre Performance
This Friday is National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. To mark this important day, students across
the school will participate in activities during the week to improve their awareness of bullying and it impact on
others. On Tuesday, the Years 4-10 students participated in a performance and workshop by the Grin and Tonic
theatre troupe, funded by Queensland Health. Below is a description of the performance “7 Billion Friends” viewed
by the Year 6-10 students:
There are over 7 billion people in the world. What if you could make all of them your friend?
Tom’s been a vlogger for two years, but only has a small handful of subscribers. But he’s desperate for more. Every video is a failed attempt at viral fame.
A new kid rocks up at school and accidentally captures an epic fail, instantly gaining over a million views. Tom is instantly gripped by jealousy. He quietly begins trolling his nemesis.
Using real documents, internet logs, emails and personal stories 7 Billion Friends explores the pitfalls of friendship in the real and virtual worlds.
The key messages from the performance were followed up in
Pastoral Care during the afternoon, and students had the
opportunity to reflect on their use of social media and their
relationships with others.
The Year 4/5 class did not view the performance however was
privileged to join in a drama workshop afterwards, with the
Grin and Tonic presenters Alex and Ellen. Miss Lund said the
students loved the drama activities and she now has many
ideas to implement in class to make learning even more
enjoyable!
