(1) Synthesis of transition metal phosphides, arsenides and antimonides as discrete particles < 100 nm in diameter; characterization of magnetic, electronic and optical properties as a function of particle size. (2) Preparation, physical property characterization, and applications of metal chalcogenide gels, xerogels and aerogels. (3) Preparation of novel transition metal pnicogen (P, As ,Sb, Bi) halide phases; structural determination, ion-exchange studies, and ionic conductivity measurements. (4) Study of organic crystal growth from inorganic nanoparticulate seeds (with Prof. Guangzhao Mao, Chemical Engineering, WSU). (5) Development of active silica-polymer composites for drug-delivery applications (with Prof. David Oupicky, Pharmaceutical Sciences, WSU).

(1) Use of low temperature and sol-gel synthetic routes to prepare new manganese oxide nanocrystalline materials. Characterization of products by X-ray powder diffraction, small angle neutron scattering, transmission and scattering electron microscopies, infrared and UV-visible spectroscopies, atomic absorption, thermal gravimetric analysis, and titration methods. (2) Study of ac glow discharge plasmas for the generation of H2 and the decomposition of CO2. Optimization of plasma parameters for increased efficiency and study of mechanism using luminescence spectroscopy. Characterization of products using Partial Pressure Analysis-Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.

Anything” Campaign and photo shoot, August, 2003.
• Host lab for an undergraduate researcher participating in the NSF Summer Research Program in
Solid State Chemistry, 2004 (Ms. Michele Tague), 2008 (Ms. Erin Gleason), and 2009 (Ms. Erica
Chen).
• Presented “Nanotechnology for the 21st Century” and provided lab tour to a group of 4th, 5th, and 6th
graders participating in the Lego-robotics competition, 10/18/06.
• Host lab for undergraduate researcher participating in the Henry Ford Community College Michigan
Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program, 2007-2008 (Mr. Lance Aquilina) and summer 2009 (Mr.
Antonio Castañeda).
• Developed and implemented a Keeping in Touch (KiT) one-day module for the Gaining Options-
Girls Investigate Real Life (GO-GIRL) program, called GO-GIRLs Go Nano. First conducted on
11/7/09 to over 60 girls from grades 8-12 from the greater Detroit area (repeated 2011).

• Hosted a visit from a seminar class at Albion College to discuss Nanotechnology and see how
research on Nanotechnology is done, 10/21/11.
