Introduction

• Welcome to this startup meeting• The initiative BIMSALABIM was taken as a result of a discussion 2010 between:– Dansk byggeri– Entreprenørforeningen – Bygg og Anlegg– Rekennusteollisuus– Sveriges Byggindustrier

• All of us representing Construction companies

This is BIMSALABIM

…the idea…

BIMSALABIM is…

• a collaboration between the constructionrelated organizations in the nordic countries

• aiming to a collaboration between different universities and higher vocational education

• focusing students in higher education and their teachers

Extent

Design Construction ManagementBIMSALABIMBIMSALABIM BIMSALABIM

BIMSALABIM…

• …will highlight BIM‐use in the production stage of the construction process:– Cost‐estimating– Planning– Workplace – Visualization during production

• Replacing paper drawings?– Collision detection– …

Timing

• Right now there is an increasing amount ofBIM‐use at construction sites in our countries

• Young professionals seems to be involvedeverywhere

• Universities and higher vocational educationhas a key role and has to prepare the students for these roles

But:

• Students still need to understand what theyare doing

• BIM‐tools has to be implemented in a waythat makes it easier to learn basics in how tocontrol a construction project

BIMSALABIM…

• …uses english as working language– Easier with one common language, no need for translation

– Good for students to develop skills in construction related english

– Suitable for computer related issues

Is there a problem…

• …if there already exists initatives within the same area?– NO – just link to them!

• …with design and architecture?– Of course not – but we can see a lot of BIM‐related activities within this area. Thats important– we want to add the construction phase.

BIMSALABIM has…

• …already a Wordpress‐site established• …registered these adresses:

– www.bimsalabim.eu– www.bimsalabim.org

BIMSALABIM has also…

BIM at participating schools

A brief desciption of present situation

5 minutes each

• BIMByen.dk• Ingeniørhøjskolen København• Fagskolen i Oslo• Oulu UAS, School of Engineering• Tampere University of Technology• Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences• Saimaa University of Applied Sciences• HAMK University of Applied Sciences• Yrkeshögskolan Göteborg• Chalmers• Malmö Högskola

Lillebaelt Academy of ProfessionalHigher Education

• Integrating BIM througout the education…

Ingeniørhøjskolen København

• Infrastructure and civil engineering• Elementary BIM‐courses integratingperspectives from architecture and engineering

• Course: ”Process planning” using a 3D‐model from the industry.

• Two optional courses in english

Fagskolen i Oslo

• 500 students– Students must have a vocational certificate

• BIM education since 2008– One‐year education after two years at higher level– Construction and from 2010: HVAC and electrical trades(installation)

• Exchanging IFC‐files between disciplines• Close collaboration with companies• Own manuals – step by step• Network for former students ”BIMfag”: www.bimfag.no

Oulu UAS, School of Engineering

• 700 students in civil engineering• Courses

– Basics of Product Type Based Building Design (3 ECTS cr)

– Application Programs in Construction Industry (3 ECTS cr)

– Advanced Course in Product Type BasedConstruction Design (3 ECTS cr)

– Three other courses (Tekla use)

Tampere University of Technology

• 898 students in civil engineering• Several courses BIM

– Arkitektur• Archicad, Revit, Visualization

– Civil engineering

• Trying to integrate BIM in other courses, mainly design

Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences

Saimaa University of Applied Sciences

• 200 students – mainly BSc‐level– Interesting new model: after 3 years of workexperience BSc can take a MSc.

• BSc: BIM Structural Design 3 cu• MSc: Using BIM 3 cu• Construction management: BIM basics• Planning to:

– Integrate BIM into normal courses– Basic tools integrated as early as possible (Archicadand Tekla structures)

HAMK University of Applied Sciences

• Examples– Working with different applications– Students work with models that are ”started”

Yrkeshögskolan Göteborg

• Planning BIM‐acitivities:– Building production management (2 year)– Infrastructure production management (2 year)– Computer Graphics Design– 3D Visualization (6 months, for architects)

Chalmers

• About 1000 students at BSc and MSc‐level• BIM at basic level mainly

– Visualization– Conceptual and early design (7,5 cr)– Planning and estimating (since 2007) integrated in CM‐courses

• Revit > iLink > BidCon (estimating) > PlanCon (planning)– 4D – clash detection

• Use instruction videos (in Swedish)– http://bimlabs.chalmers.se

Malmö Högskola

• 80 students per year (Building eng BSc)• Interesting description of the integration ofBIM during the three years

• Anders Peterson has made a report aboutimplemeting BIM in education

BIMByen.dk

• Danish BIM‐portal
