The Purchase of Expertise ModelThe consultee "purchases" a consultant who can provide expertise (knowledge of resolving the client's problems) to solve a previously determined problem. In this Model the consultee "purchases" the consultant's ability to both diagnose a problem and prescribe an appropriate set of solutions for it.

The Process Model

This model views consultation as a "set of activities on the part of the consultant which help the consultee to perceive, understand and act upon process events which occur in the environment.

It focuses on how problems are solved rather than on the content of problems.

Establishing the Infrastructure:

24

To do your job effectively, it is important to set your infrastructure within the client’s organization in place.

Setting the Project Management In Place:

28

Where will interviews be held?

Will you have a company phone number, or will you need to use your cell phone?

Where will you be meeting with people?Where will team meetings be held?

Will you need a security pass? What level of access would you have?

These are questions that need to be answered at the beginning of the process.

Logistics of the Infrastructure

The Startup PhaseThe Startup Phase

Establishing the Infrastructure:

29

It will be your responsibility to put a project management system in place so you can track what is to be done, by whom, and when. This need not be a sophisticated system, depending on your expertise and the complexity of the project on which you are working.

A simple project management tool is suggested on action planning to ensure that the appropriate tasks have been accomplished.

Another aspect of Project Management is the Status Reporting Process.

Establishing the Infrastructure:

30

This includes the vehicle used for communicating with all parties involved. (hard copy, email, oral, formal vs informal)

The Audience for the communication (Internal OD Professional, steering team, executive committee)

And the Frequency of the communication (weekly, monthly, quarterly)

Making these decisions clearly at the Startup Stage will prevent misunderstandings later.

Establishing the Work Team:

Usually, the most successful projects are those that establish a partnership between the client’s organization and the OD professional’s organization, whether internal or external.

Establishing the Work Team:

33

First, you need to identify your point person within the client organization, often another OD professional.

Second, you will likely be working with a team within the client organization.

This might be the executive committee consisting of senior managers. Or, you may find it more helpful to establish a project steering committee to work with a cross section of people with various demographics and representing a range of area from within the client’s organization.

Third, you need to access top management within the organization

It is crucial if your project is to have real impact. If you are not working with the executive as your team, you will want assurances that you can meet at the most any time with organization’s chief executive officer (CEO)or the senior manager in the area of the organization in which you will be working.

Since, change almost always requires at least the support of the person or people at the top, such access often becomes critical for the project’s success.

Determining the Assessment Process

38

This is usually a decision that you will make in consultation with organization point person or, even better, with the steering team with which you are working from within the organization.

You can help the team understand the strengths and weaknesses of each, and the various costs associated with each.

The team can then make an informed decision as to which approach to use. It is crucial if your project is to have real impact.
