“The world has grown cold, it is for us Catholics to rekindle the vital fire which had been extin-guished. It is for us to inaugurate the era of the
martyrs, for it is a martyrdom possible to every Christian. To give one’s life for God and for one’s brothers (and sisters), to give one’s life in sacrifice, is to be a martyr. It is indif-ferent whether the sacrifice be consummated at one moment, or whether slowly consuming, it fills the altar night and day with sweet perfume. To be martyr is to give back to heaven all that one has received, wealth, life, our whole soul.” –Bl. Frederic Ozanam- (Ramson, Praying with Frederic, p.103)

Most Christians today re-ceive a bunch of palm fronds, olive branches, pussy willow, or forsythia (a relative of the olive) to carry in procession and to bear home in bless-ing. Some even offer sprigs of palm or other branches as a ges-ture of peace to those they have offended. The desire is to make a clean sweep of your spiri-tual house before the Easter feast. Accepting the branch is a token of the bearer’s will-ingness to journey with the Church through a grateful remembrance of Jesus
life-giving resurrection. Traditionally, the plants associated with today’s feast are planted in cemeter-ies as a sign of Christ’s vic-
tory over death and the promise of new life. The joy of this day’s opening proces-sion soon gives
way to a solemn reading of the Passion, this
year according to Matthew. The ritual is meant not only to strengthen us to hear this account, but to stir us up to accompany the Church on this journey through Holy Week. It also prepares us for next Sunday’s joyful renewal of our baptismal vows. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE ATTITUDE OF CHRIST JESUS The Lenten cycle brings us to this “mixed” Sunday of palm branches and painful suffering. Our liturgy opens by recalling Jesus’ triumphant entry along the main road into Jerusalem, then moves quickly to the back streets of be-trayal and humiliation, the courtyards of torture and aban-donment, the hill of execution. Isaiah’s strange and gripping “Song of the Servant of God” was to become the song of Jesus. It is the song of one who strides forward consistently in the face of criti-cism, even scorn: “I have not rebelled, have not turned back.” It is to become our song, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ. How are we to react when we hear the account of the passion and death of the Lord? Paul tells us that our attitude must be Christ’s, who “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave.” We pray that we may absorb the atti-tude of Christ, and face life squarely in its triumph and its pain.
THE CROSS We should glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection, through whom we are saved and delivered. —Entrance Antiphon, Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, The Roman Missal
