Dear Parishioners,
Bring to mind the farewell we offer to visiting family
or friends on Easter Sunday. We probably offered some
thanks, some hugs and kisses. We know farewells are impor-
tant events. Since we can never be certain what the future will
bring, seasonal or even daily farewells have the potential to be
more significant than we might ever imagine.
Final farewells are even more awesome events. They
are awesome in the true sense of the word - not the current
sense of being neat or cool. The real meaning of the word is
“an emotion of mingled reverence, dread and wonder.” This
more complex awesome farewell can be found in our readings
this weekend.
Echoed in the first reading and the gospel, we hear a
final farewell to Judas, Jesus’ betrayer. His legacy is a sad and
misunderstood one. Perhaps he was simply a thief - dishonest
and selfish. Perhaps he misunderstood Jesus’ Messiah-ship and
failed to let go of his misguided hopes. He tried to force Jesus
the path to an earthly kingship that was not Jesus’ calling or
will. Whatever Judas’ reason, he was mistaken. Undoubtedly,
his mistake brings to mind our own weakness and sin.
Proclaimed just before his arrest, Jesus’ farewell dis-
course at the Last Supper is awesome in every sense of the
word. He reflects back upon his mission and ministry, and he
is concerned for the loved ones he leaves behind. His discourse
offers us tips to continue our portion of his mission and minis-
try.
Initially, his farewell contains the conflicting feelings
of reverence and dread, just like the definition for awesome
describes. Jesus speaks of the world to which the Father sent
him out of love. Jesus is that love incarnate, and we can’t help
but feel love and reverence in return. At the same time, many
in the world rejected divine love and will continue to oppose
the Apostles and us. Our vocation, proclamation and ministry
will always be bumping up against evil and falsehood in our-
selves and others. May we not be misled like Judas. May we
seek and find the truth for ourselves and the world that the evil
one wants us to betray.
To help in this endeavor, the farewell is also awesome
because of the wonder and hope of its promise, a promise of
God’s protection in Christ through the Spirit. His discourse
reminds us of the protection that the Lord was for his Apostles
and is for us today. We are called to tap into the protection
through celebration of the sacraments, which we do today. Let
us not forget the renewal and protection of Christ we have in
the sacrament of reconciliation, which many of us celebrated
during lent.

Also a part of this farewell is the promise of truth, which we
know sets us free. Jesus speaks of being consecrated in the
truth. As the consecration changes bread and wine into our
risen Lord, so too we must continually allow ourselves to un-
dergo the transformation and change to which faith calls us, so
that we can live the truth better. If we are not allowing our
faith to grow in the truth through a continual call to conver-
sion, it is likely our faith is declining and we are not growing
closer to the truth that is Christ. During this Easter season, we
allow the newly baptized and initiated to be examples for us of
what we ought to be and do. We ought to be making continual
choices to grow closer to Jesus through faith formation, and
announce his Good News by our life and in our words.
Jesus has offered us an awesome farewell and now
sits at the right hand of the Father. May we rely on his protec-
tion against evil and falsehood, and continue to make our way
in a world he was sent to save, being contently consecrated in
the truth that is Christ.
God Love Ya!

Pre-Jordan classes In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held the third
Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Church. The parents of
the child are required to attend the class; godparents are also
welcome but not required to attend.
Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the
Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended the
class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your godpar-
ents, you may then call the rectory for an appointment to book
the date of your choosing. The next scheduled classes are:

World Meeting of Families
In order to help us prepare for the World Meeting of
Families and the anticipated visit from Pope Francis, a
catechism of family life entitled, Love is Our Mission:
The Family Fully Alive, has been prepared. Over the
next few months, our parish will reflect on chapters
from this catechism. You can order a copy of this cate-
chism and learn about the World Meeting of Families
at WorldMeeting2015.org.
Chapter 7: Light in a dark world Pope Francis observed that the Church is popular with
the world when Catholics work for social justice. But,
the Pope continued, with respect to “the cultural crisis”
facing the family, “we find it difficult to make people
see that when we raise other questions less palatable to
public opinion, we are doing so out of fidelity to pre-
cisely the same convictions about human dignity and
the common good.” This chapter carefully examines
subjects such as pornography, contraception, and so-
called same-sex marriage. These are topics where
Catholic teaching tends to be at odds with current
worldly opinion. Reading this chapter in its entirety is
an opportunity to consider the reasons for the Church’s
teaching. Each one of these issues deserves more space
than this summary paragraph can offer. But as we said
at the start of this catechesis, all Church teaching about
marriage, the family, and sexuality flows from Jesus.
Catholic moral theology builds upon basic Christian
convictions about God’s creation and covenant, hu-
manity’s fall, and Christ’s incarnation, life, crucifix-
ion, and resurrection. These teachings involve costs
and suffering for all who would be Jesus’ disciples, but
they also open up new opportunities for beauty and
human flourishing. This chapter is your chance to ex-
plore how it all fits together, even when it might mean
taking unpopular stances in our culture. This chapter
explains how every time the Church says “no” to
something which secular society accepts, it is for the
sake of enabling a deeper “yes” to God and his plan for
our lives. - Christopher C. Roberts, catechism editor

Affordable Catholic Education May
Be Within Reach! While we know that Catholic schools offer an excellent education and moral formation for their students, some families opt for other schools—public, charter, private, or homeschools—due to the lower price tag. Still, perhaps you wish that your child(ren) had the benefit of attending a Catholic school—just look at our standardized test scores, which have risen steadily at Archdiocesan elementary schools over the past few years!
In partnership with the Connelly Foundation, Saint Pio Catholic Regional School now has
the opportunity to offer
Tuition Transfer Grants
for new students who register in grades 2-6.
Any student currently attending a public, charter, home, or private school
who registers to attend Saint Pio Catholic Regional School is eligible to receive a
three-year tuition grant: $1,000 in Year One $500 in Year Two
$300 in Year Three
A total savings of $1,800 for your family!
A limited number of grants are available in each grade, and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis beginning April 7, 2015.
While these grants are only available to new transfer students who register at Saint Pio
Catholic Regional School, they will also benefit current families by filling empty classroom seats,
which increases the school’s efficiency and revenue, and minimizes future tuition increases.
Full classrooms are the surest path to
affordable tuition for everyone!
If you are interested in a Tuition Transfer Grant or in registering at Saint Pio Catholic Regional School, please contact Marianne Garnham, Principal at (215) 467-5430 to schedule a
meeting or a school tour.
