Welcome back.
We have had a wonderful start to the term with Mr Prasad Nair and his wife Bindu celebrating the arrival of their first child, a son, named Isaac Prasad born on Tuesday 16 April. We wish them every happi-ness at this exciting time in their lives.
The fun introduction of our new Sun Smart Hat Policy has seen in just a few days an increase in the number of staff and students wearing hats. The Sun Smart Policy will be rolled out over the remainder of 2013 and we thank you for the messages of support from parents as we imple-ment this important endeavour.
Our camp season is off to a great start. Our Year 7 stu-dents have been having a good time this week, and special thanks to those staff members who go on camps and as-sist our Head of Outdoor Education, Dave Atkins to make them such a memorable learning experience.
All the activities and programs we provide at the College, all require teamwork. Without that, we wouldn’t be able to achieve our goals or witness the remarkable achieve-ments of our students. Thank you to everyone for their hardwork in making ideas become reality.
Yours sincerely,
Chris Leesong Deputy Headmaster

Congratulations Billie!
Congratulations Jeremy!
Billie Newton selected for Australian U17 Netball Development Squad
Hard work and hours of training have paid off for Year 11 student, Billie Newton who was selected for the Australian U17 Netball Development Squad. Billie is the first Centralian since 1999 to be named in the squad.
Playing at the national titles in Darwin, Billie caught the eye of the selectors even though the NT team didn’t win a game.
“My selection was surprising and rewarding, especially after all the training and in particular for my coaches who have put in so much time training me.”
“It’s so good to be able to give something back to them for all their hard work.”
For over 8 weeks leading up to the titles, Billie was at the peak of her training, completing 10 training sessions a week before and after school, most of which were held in the College’s Bruce Reid Sports Centre and gym.
“Having the Bruce Reid Sports Centre at the College is great. I don’t think I could have done all the training if I had to go somewhere else.”
On 9 May, Billie will travel to Canberra for a 4 day camp and will work with the top coaches in Australia and in June/July, she will have a week of training and will ‘sample’ what it’s like at the Australian Institute of Sport.
Congratulations on an amazing achievement and we wish Billie good luck at the upcoming training camps.
Congratulations to Year 10 student, Jeremy Gillen - winner of the NT Young Achiever ConocoPhillips Environment Award for his work starting the Alice Springs branch of the Austra-lian Youth Climate Coalition.
With over 80,000 young people involved across Australia, the AYCC’s mission is to build a generation wide movement to solve climate change before it’s too late. They hope to do this through bringing about short term political impact and long term cultural change.
In 2012, the AYCC - Alice Springs organised and ran a stall at the Eco Fair heldat the Olive Pink Botanical Gardens. They also organised a solar concert at theAlice Springs Youth Centre, featuring Elsie Lange and the Foot Knuckles. Thesound system was run using a solar electricity system and interestingly, they

found that they were generating ten times more power than they actually needed.
Unfortunately, due to the rain on the day, the solar electricity system had to be unplugged towards the end of the concert. All the money raised from this event went towards making the Youth Centre more energy efficient.
For these events to happen, Jeremy had the support from Jimmy Cocking, from the Arid Lands Environment Centre. He assisted the organisation in getting an $8,000 grant that went towards the ban-ners and advertising.
Although 2012 was a busy year for Jeremy, he did have time to take a ‘carbon neutral holiday’ and rode his bike to Uluru with his dad.
Congratulations again Jeremy on winning your category.

SPC Students NT Bouldering Champions 2013An Elite Crew of SPC’s climbers headed off to the Territory’s capital during the last week of Term 1 to test their strength and power against Darwin’s best climbers. Held at The Rock In Doctor’s Gully near the centre of town, our students were most impressed by the change in climbing scene that the centre provided. This included many different walls often requiring odd body contortions, chimneys, arêtes, por-table climbing wall, cracks, features and the slow break down of muscle and fingers.
The TeamAustin Bartley, Callum Duguid (winner of the fastest climber), Jeremy Gillen (winner overall senior male), Ryan Gaskon (winner Best Bouldering climber), David Boffa, Gabriele Ziersch (winner overall female senior), Ethan Hall, Rafiki Bursle, Liam O’Toole, Masson Willis-Cunningham and staffed by David Atkins.
One of the challenges of interest was to climb 1 kilometre vertically as fast as pos-sible as a team. With four ropes running on the portable climbing tower SPC managed to climb 125 times up and down the tower within 14 minutes, collapsing in a saturated state of exhaustion at the end, as the hu-midity was really taking them to new levels of fatigue.
All of the students climbed very well during the competition and I am sure that even Ryan had enough climbing in at the end of the competition. As a result of all their hard work during the week, St Philip’s are now the holders of the title as NT Champions, which will mean that we will have to defend the title in 2014. This title did not come without a cost! Ryan had literally climbed his finger tips off by the end of the week and all others were sporting a large number of aches and pains. Most of us were unable to hold onto the rocks at the stage of get-
ting on the plane.
Students were also fortunate enough to see some local sites such as Darwin’s foreshore and the wharf, Parliament House includ-ing viewing Parliament in session, the War Museum and Leanyer Water Park.
It was an absolutely awesome effort by all involved and they will hopefully inform everyone about the event during assembly this term. Stay tuned and have a chat about the adventure of the NT Bouldering Cham-pions for 2013!

How quickly the holidays fly by! The new term is here and we welcome two new exchange students, Sagarika from India and Erin from Canada. Let’s hope they both have a wonderful time here with us. I’m sure our boarders will do their best to help them settle in. The good news is that during the holiday our total for the Walk in her Shoes fund- raising effort reached $3255, an outstanding effort. Well done to all those involved, both for their walking and for their efforts to get sponsorship. Many thanks also, to everyone who has supported them so generously.
Now our attention has turned to our annual fund-raising dinner which takes place next week on Saturday 27 April. There is a lot to be done over the next week, but I’m sure the girls will acquit themselves well as they always have.
It promises to be a very busy term with three year levels going on camp and of course exams, but I’m sure there’ll be time for plenty of fun too and we have plenty planned.

Junior Triathlon CampFive regulars from the St Philip’s Triathlon Squad gave up four days of their Easter holidays to attend a Junior Triathlon Camp in Darwin. James Steer, Shane Van Luenen, Moby and Jasper Edwards and Stephanie Hanlon jammed bikes into boxes and braved the heat and humidity in Darwin in a bid to become better triathletes.
Camp director Tim Ellison, who not only works with junior triathletes but also elite mountain bikes riders, assembled a team of outstanding present-ers who covered topics on heat and hydration, nutrition, strength training, bike cleaning and maintenance, running, swimming and cycling technique and even media training. While James and Shane stood out on the bike, Jasper was the stand out runner despite carrying an injury into the camp. Stephine came home with a lighter bike as a result of the cleaning session and Moby taught us a lesson in what not to carry in your bag while flying. With a wealth of new ideas there will still be opportunities for students in triathlon over the winter months. Watch this space.
James Steer, Shane Van Leunen and Jasper Edwards have already put their new skills into action completing a sprint distance event over the weekend. James also gave Mr Knott a scare leading him into the run leg of the Alice Springs Triathlon the week before the camp. Despite finishing just behind Mr Knott after the run he won best Junior on the day.

From the 20 - 22 March 2013, Samuel Nippress attended the National Schools Constitution Convention in Canberra. Samuel, along with another Tasmanian student, were selected to present the communique on behalf of the student cohort.
Lisa Donohoe, a teacher from Centralian College who chaperoned the NT students, said that Samuel presented with considerable assurance. She also said that he was also very measured, thoughtful and less ego driven than many other students.
Congratulations Samuel on such a successful trip to Canberra.

A visit from the Japanese ConsulIn 2012, Keenan Abbott, a student in Year 7 Japanese, won a ‘Highly Commended’ prize in the 30th Australia-Japan Relations Essay Contest. The awards ceremony was held in Sydney on 31st January this year but Keenan was unable to attend.
On March 26th, the Japanese Consul for Information and Culture, Hiroyuki Yamada, made a special trip from Canberra to visit St Philip’s and present Keenan with his
prize –a certificate, a plaque and some small Japanese goods. While here, Mr Yamada spent time with Keenan’s Year 8 Japanese class and the Year 10 Japanese class and met with Chris Tudor, Chris Leesong, Japanese teacher Yukihasa Matsueda and Head of Languages Christine Wilson. St Philip’s congratulates Keenan on his achievement and thanks Mr Yamada for his visit.

Term 2 - Week 2Student counting Apples
A teacher teaching Maths to seven-year-old Laiq asked him, “If I give you one apple and one apple and one apple, how many apples will you have?”
Within a few seconds Laiq replied confidently, “Four!”
The dismayed teacher was expecting an effortless correct answer, three. She was disappointed. “Maybe the child did not listen properly,” she thought.
She repeated, “Laiq, listen carefully. If I give you one apple and one apple and one apple, how many apples will you have?”
Laiq had seen the disappointment on his teacher’s face. He calculated again on his fingers. But within him he was also searching for the answer that will make the teacher happy. His search for the answer was not for the correct one, but the one that will make his teacher happy.
This time hesitatingly he replied, “Four.”
The disappointment stayed on the teacher’s face. She re-membered that Laiq liked strawberries.
She thought maybe he doesn’t like apples and that is mak-ing him lose focus.
This time with an exaggerated excitement and twinkling in her eyes she asked, “If I give you one strawberry and one strawberry and one strawberry, then how many will you have?”
Seeing the teacher happy, young Laiq calculated on his fin-gers again. There was no pressure on him, but a little on the teacher. She wanted her new approach to succeed.
With a hesitating smile young Laiq replied, “Three?”
The teacher now had a victorious smile. Her approach had succeeded. She wanted to congratulate herself.
But one last thing remained. Once again she asked him, “Now if I give you one apple and one apple and one more apple how many will you have?”
Promptly Laiq answered, “Four!”
The teacher was aghast. “How Laiq, how?” she demanded in a little stern and irritated voice.
In a voice that was low and hesitating young Laiq replied, “Because I already have one apple in my bag.”
