To visitors to our Parish, to
those who have recently
moved into the area and to those comforta-
ble and nourished here—Welcome To All.
And, regardless of your status in the
Church, your marital state, your ethnicity,
your prior religious experience, your per-
sonal history, background or sexual orienta-
tion, please know that you are accepted
and respected at Saint Mary–Saint Cathe-
rine of Siena Parish. Please introduce your-
self to the priest and register as a member of
our Parish.
Welcome!
Saint Mary–Saint Catherine of
Siena is an urban, Roman
Catholic Parish formed in 2006 from two
historic Charlestown parishes. We are an
intentionally inclusive community welcom-
ing all of the many people who make up
our diverse neighborhood. Because our
lives are nourished by the Eucharist, we
strive to build a vibrant Parish that devel-
ops and strengthens our faith and worship.
With a goal of being community-oriented in
the Spirit of the Gospel, we are involved in
the local and global issues of our times. We
are therefore dedicated to service, action,
and compassion.

St. Mary’s–St. Catherine of Siena
es una parroquia urbana, Católica
Romana, formada en 2006 de la unión de dos
parroquias históricas de Charlestown. Somos una
comunidad intencionalmente inclusiva que acoge
a toda clase de personas que constituyen nuestro
diverso vecindario. Porque nuestras vidas están
alimentadas por la Eucaristía, nuestra intención
es establecer una parroquia vibrante que desarro-
lle y fortifique nuestra fe y nuestro culto. Con la
meta de estar orientados hacia la comunidad en el
Espíritu del Evangelio, estamos comprometidos
en los asuntos locales y globales de nuestros tiem-
pos. Estamos, por lo tanto, dedicados al servicio,
a la acción y a la compasión.

INSIDE: MORE INFO ON THE PRIESTHOOD DINNER
You Are Invited ...
Back in January after a few
days at Mass. General Hospital
for spine surgery, I was released
to the infirmary at Regina Cleri, a
home for
retired
priests in
the West
End. This
remarkable
house was
established
more than
50 years
ago by Cardinal Cushing and is
currently home for 62 priests
who have served for their entire
lives in parishes throughout Bos-
ton.
On the infirmary floor, two
rooms are kept available for a
priest like myself who needs
short term nursing assistance af-
ter a hospital stay. The care is ex-
cellent and the opportunity to
recuperate in that environment
with fellow priests, a8end daily
Mass, and share in meals with a
remarkable group of senior
priests was a blessing.
This was the second time I
was able to take advantage of
this precious
resource. The
other was in
1999 while re-
cuperating
from cancer
surgery at
John Hopkins
Hospital. On
that occasion
as well, my time at Regina Cleri
was a blessing.
I write about this today to
point out the needs of the retired
and ill priests of the Archdiocese
and the efforts to strengthen the
resources needed. One of those
initiatives is the annual Celebra-
tion of the Priesthood Dinner that
will take place on September 18.
Through the generosity of var-
ious parishioners, our Parish has
been present for the past nine
years of these dinners. This year,

“There will be plenty for all” these words come from our
first reading today and are reit-erated in the gospel story of the multiplication of the loaves and fish. Our God is generous be-yond our expectations! These readings remind us of God’s
generosity, his providence and loving care, especially when we feel in-adequate to the task of being a disciple of Christ. Ponder these words, “There will be plenty for all” and throughout the week and watch for
the ways that God does indeed provide.

St. Alphonus Marie Liguori Bishop, Doctor of the Church, and the founder of the Re-demptorist Congregation. He was born Alphonsus Marie Antony John Cosmos Damien Michael Gaspard de Liguori on September 27,1696, at Marianella, near Naples, Italy. Raised in a pious home, Alphonsus went on retreats with his father, Don Joseph, who was a naval officer and a cap-tain of the Royal Galleys. Alphonsus was the oldest of sev-
en children, raised by a devout mother of Spanish descent. Educated at the University of Naples, Alphonsus received his doctorate at the age of sixteen. By age nineteen he was practicing law, but he saw the transitory nature of the secu-lar world, and after a brief time, retreated from the law courts and his fame. Visiting the local Hospital for Incurables on August 28, 1723, he had a vision and was told to consecrate his life solely to God. In response, Alphonsus dedi-cated himself to the religious life, even while suffering persecution from his fam-ily.
His austerities were rigorous, and he suffered daily the pain from rheuma-tism that was beginning to deform his body. He spent several years having to drink from tubes because his head was so bent forward. An attack of rheumatic fever, from May 1768 to June 1769, left him paralyzed. He was not allowed to resign his see, however, until 1775. In 1780, Alphonsus suffered great anguish. But he overcame his depression, and he experienced visions, performed mira-cles, and gave prophecies. He died peacefully on August 1,1787, at Nocera di Pagani, near Naples as the Angelus was ringing. He was beatified in 1816 and canonized in 1839. In 1871, Alphonsus was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX. His writings on moral, theological, and ascetic matters had great impact and have survived through the years, especially his Moral Theology and his Glories of Mary. He was buried at the monastery of the Pagani near Naples. Shrines were built there and at St. Agatha of the Goths. He is the patron of con-fessors, moral theologians, and the lay apostolate. In liturgical art he is depict-ed as bent over with rheumatism or as a young priest.

Fr. Edward Okpu, from the Diocese of Bomadi will be here to speak at the Masses
The Catholic Diocese of Bomadi is located in the rural areas of Delta State in south-south of Nigeria. The Diocese of Bomadi is being shepherded by Bishop Hyacinth Egbebo, MSP. Given that the Catholic faith is thriving in this area, and the harvest to God’s Kingdom is plentiful gives us all a cause for joy. However, the economic situation of the people is deplorable. The people have no access to porta-ble water, roads, hospitals, schools, and there is no electricity. There are little or no
job opportunities in these rural areas. The people only depend on fishing and a little bit of farming with crude implements as their main source of livelihood. Worse still, is that the rivers are quite polluted from crude oil exploitation activities. Hence aquatic life has become gravely endangered. Most of the local population has their main source of drinking water from the polluted river. The water is polluted with debris and sometimes from occasional oil spillages. This same river is where people empty all their wastes. This explains why the death rate is abnormally high especially among children whose immune system is not developed enough to accept this level of pollution. Pregnant mothers and elderly are also vulnerable with high death rates as well. Father Okpu will be here on behalf of the Diocese of Bomadi to help raise awareness of the needs of the diocese and is looking for some financial help.
Estabamos ahi ese dia. Lo vimos con nuestros propios ojo. Y
dio a Jesus.
Habia algo
sobre esos panes. De que manera sientes que Jesus completa?
