FEBRUARY 23, 2020
Ash Wednesday
Many of our parishioners today, especially our young adults, are living in a society that tells them not to believe in the need for penance or to think about death and faith. We are told that sin and death are to be mocked. As Catholics, we are now entering a time in our church of penance, a time to reflect on death. We do this as we unite ourselves with Jesus in his death and resurrection. In his dying, we see the suffering, and in His rising, we also are resurrected. This coming Wednesday we invite all of our congregation to receive ashes on their foreheads. It is a day that symbolizes two things, death and repentance. The ashes symbolize the dust; from death, we decompose to dust. That dust is represented by the ashes.
We will spend time this Lent focusing on our own mortality and on our own sinfulness. We go into this solemn time of the year but still wait in great anticipation for the joy of Easter. Jesus died for our sins and with His resurrection, we gain Christ’s ultimate victory over sin.
Closing of Ordinary Time ServicePlease join us on Tuesday, Feb. 25 as we clear the altar and close the triptych doors. We go from a beautifully decorated altar to a bare empty space to prepare us for weeks of penance. We will then burn last year’s palms to create ashes.
There will be an ice cream social immediately following the closing service. It is our Fat Tuesday celebration before we begin a time of fasting and entering our penitential season.

the 8th grade students was over the top! What an amazing evening of delicious food and
wonderful company. Thank you to all of those that attended and helped our students raise
money to go on their class trip to Washington, DC. The ambiance was really fitting for such
an extravagant meal. It was also so much fun to play Top Chef as we voted for the appetizers,
main course, and desserts! What a great idea and a fun night!

Wisdom of the Fathers Fear the Lord, not the devil.
If we have proper fear of the Lord, the visionary Hermas is told, we have no reason to fear Satan. The devil has no real power when we do the will of God.
“Fear the Lord and keep his commandments. For if you keep
God’s commandments, you will be powerful in everything you
do, and everything you do will be marvelous. Fearing the Lord,
you will do all things well. This is the fear you ought to have, so
that you may be saved.
But do not fear the devil – for, if you fear the Lord, you will
have dominion over the devil, for there is no power in him.
And if there is no power in him, then there is no reason to fear
him. But you should greatly fear him in whom there is glorious
power. For everyone who has power is to be feared, but whoever
has no power is despised by all.” - Hermas, Commandment, 7
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER… Do I have enough fear of the Lord to destroy my fear of Satan?
CLOSING PRAYER
Father, take away from me all fear and temptation, and all the influence of Satan, through the grace and mercy of your only-begotten Son.
Meet Your Candidates & CatechumensMATTHEW CAHALFavorite bible verse: Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humil-ity regard others as better than your-selves. – Philippians 2:3Favorite Saint: St. Anthony Why do you want to become Catholic? When my mother passed away it put me on a very long spiritual
journey. By “long journey,” I mean three seminars at the Hebrew College Union, meditation at the Price Hill Zen Center, and half a dozen Protestant churches. Ultimately, I found my home here in the Catholic Church. As G.K. Chesterton wrote, “The Church is the only thing which saves a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of this age” and I couldn’t agree more.
The rule of justice is plain: namely, that a good man ought not to swerve from the truth, nor inf lict any unjust loss on anyone, nor
act in any way deceitfully or fraudulently. - St. Ambrose of Milan

Dresser Project 2020For quite a number of years, Saint Cecilia parish has generously contributed to a “dresser project.” Through this project, we collect baby items that will be donated, through Pregnancy Center East, to a mother who has made the choice of life for her unborn child. Many parishioners find this to be a very positive way to express their support for the pro-life movement. This year’s dresser can be found in the church vestibule with a list of suggested items. We are collecting baby items through this Sunday, February 23. The participation of everyone throughout the region is welcome and appreciated!
The Gift of African American Sacred Song Black sacred song celebrates our God, His goodness, His promise, our faith and hope, our journey toward the promise. Black sacred song carries melodies and tonalities, rhythms and harmonies; metaphors, symbols and stories of faith that speak to our hearts; words, phrases and images that touch and move US.
Black sacred song has been at once a source and an expression of Black faith, spirituality and devotion. By song, our people have called the Spirit into our hearts, homes, churches and communities. Seeking to enrich our liturgies and lives with the gift of sacred song, we pray:
“Spirit, Sweet Holy Spirit, fall afresh on me.”“Everytime I hear the SpiritMoving in my heartI will pray.”Among African peoples, most art is designed
for use, that is to express a feeling or insight, to have an impact in the real world. Song is not an object to be admired so much as an instrument to teach, comfort, inspire, persuade, convince, and motivate. Music is chosen precisely for its effect upon the worshipping community. The aim is effective worship. Black sacred song is designed to move. It moves because depth of feeling gives it “spiritual power.”
Father Clarence Rivers writes: “Music is important for worship because in worship we have to express the unexpressable, the transcen-dent, human values that defy ordinary expres-sion. Music, like its other self, poetry, seems capable of doing what plain rational words cannot do: namely, to express the unexpress-able, to touch men’s hearts, to penetrate their souls, create an experience of things that cannot be reasoned. Black sacred song—old or new, folk or composed, rural or urban, traditional or contemporary—is in a very real sense, the song of the people.”
