St. Lawrence the Martyr Church SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 2017
MISSION STATEMENT St. Lawrence the Martyr Church is a community of Catholic Christians who gather together to celebrate the Eucharist,
their love of Jesus Christ and their love of one another as children of Christ. We are a diverse community focused on
creating an enthusiasm for our faith and enriching the lives for all who come to worship in our parish. Inviting and welcoming liturgies, multiple youth and young adult activities and adult enrichment programs all help make the
Word of Christ a living reality at St. Lawrence.

THE APOSTLES WERE THE FIRST TO
EXPERIENCE THE LECTIO DIVINA
Lectio divina is a Benedictine practice of praying with the Bible. However, well before the time of St. Bene-
dict, at least as early as Origen in the third century, Catholic believers were meditating on God’s written Word.
St. Ambrose is also remembered as teaching St. Augustine this form of prayer. As you may know, lectio
divina includes reading, meditating, praying and contemplating God’s Word. The bishops in the Second Vati-
can Council encouraged all of God’s people, including the laity, to practice this beautiful form of prayer. This
form of prayer was also encouraged by Pope Benedict XVI.
The other day, I was meditating on the call of the disciples in the Gospel. At that point, I realized that the first
disciples of Jesus lived the lectio divina in the actual presence of Jesus. They heard Him speak. They thought
about what He said. They prayed, i.e., then spoke with Jesus about what He was saying. They also contem-
plated the Son of God made man with whom they lived.
THE RACHEL’S VINEYAD RETREAT
A SOURCE OF HEALING FOR THOSE WOUNDED BY ABORTION
I am sure that many of our people, including members of our own families, have been wounded by participa-
tion in an abortion. God in His mercy reaches out through His Church to His children who are so wounded.
God’s Church offers a beautiful program called the Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat to assist those who are wound-
ed and grieving. Please do check on the internet for more information about this retreat and about Project Ra-
chel for ways to find forgiveness and healing after taking a part in the abortion of an unborn child.
Father Nick
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets. He speaks in today’s first reading of impending
judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to
both Judaism and Christianity.
Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too
sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have.
Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus
gathers His disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the
present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God’s chosen “remnant.”
PRAISE AND THANK HIM
Take a moment to think of everything you're proud of
about yourself and your life. Then ask yourself if you
would have any of this without God's permission and
aid? Give credit where credit is due; praise and
thank Him, not yourself.
~ St. Francis of Assisi
THE GREATEST POVERTY
We think sometimes that poverty is only being hun-
gry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being un-
wanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest pov-
erty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this
kind of poverty.
~ Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

A SPECIAL CONFERENCE FOR
MOTHERS AND MIDDLE
SCHOOL DAUGHTERS The St. Lawrence Faith Formation
team is sponsoring a workshop for mothers and their middle school aged
daughters on Saturday, February 11,
from 9 am till noon in the Church Hall. The workshop
is entitled “O Beauty Ever Ancient, Ever New”.
In a world brimming with counterfeit ideas of truth and beauty, young girls often get lost seeking their happiness
in false narratives about what it means to be truly beauti-
ful. Megan Murphy and her seventeen-year-old daughter,
Natalie, will share their story and struggle in overcoming the obstacles created by an appearance-obsessed culture
that equates beauty with females seen in the media. Na-
talie's incredible witness was featured n Lifeteen, Psyched Catholic and New Advent. She will join her mom at this
beautiful mother/daughter workshop to help share their
story and offer hope to all moms and daughters who are
struggling for a whole relationship in a world that often tries to tear them apart. The day will begin with holy
Mass followed by breakfast. Please consider joining
us! Contact the Faith Formation Office at fft@stlchester.org to sign up.
PANCAKE BREAKFAST Kick off your Super Bowl Sunday
with delicious, hot pancakes served
after all morning Masses on Sunday,
February 5, in the Church Hall. Come for all-you-can eat pancakes,
sausage, bacon and donuts in addition to the normal com-
plement of juices and coffee. $5/ person, $10/family. Best bargain in town! Tickets will be sold at door only.

ney from agnostic Jew to Evangelical Christian and final-

Tithing Income January 22, 2017 $13,561.00

From the Pastor: It is clear that many of you ar e con-
tinuing in God’s Plan for Giving. Again, I say thank you
to all of you.
From a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Parish
in Philadelphia: “I was visiting with my family in my
home country, and then when I returned, I found that my envelopes were all backed up. I filled each with the tithe
for that week, without thinking about whether I’d have
enough money to cover my expenses. I just said, ‘Lord,
this belongs to You.’ I’ve got heart trouble and I have to buy my medicine because my insurance doesn’t cover it.
When I went to the doctor, he told me, ‘I’ve got all your
medicines and so you don’t need to buy any.’ How the Lord keeps His promises!”
