Almighty God, Your salvation is never far from all who believe.
Hear our confession of sin and have mercy upon us. For our selfish luxuries, for our forgotten

St. John’s Church is…..
Rooted in the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation. We believe we are saved by grace through faith in
Jesus, that the Bible is the rule for Christian life and faith, and that the Good News of Jesus should be proclaimed
in word and deed. Sacrament Celebrating. We believe God ministers to the community of believers in unique and special ways
through Baptism and Holy Communion. Liturgically Oriented. We believe remembering the whole life of Christ is important for spiritual maturity. We
follow the church calendar, celebrating seasons like Advent and Lent. Ecumenically Minded. In the context of our heritage, we believe all those who call upon Jesus as Lord will
share in his eternal blessings and so we welcome all believers who join us to participate fully in worship.

CHUCKLE OF THE WEEK
The Sunday School teacher was explaining the story of Elijah the Prophet and the false prophets of Baal to her
class. She explained how Elijah build the altar, put wood upon it, cut the steer in pieces and laid it upon the altar.
Then how Elijah commanded the people of God to fill four barrels of water and pour it over the altar. He had
them do this four times. “Now, said the teacher, can anyone in the class tell me why the Lord would have Elijah
pour water over the steer on the altar?” A little girl quickly raised her hand with great enthusiasm and said “To
make the gravy!!”

HOW DOES ST. JOHN’S EXTEND A CALL FOR A NEW SENIOR PASTOR? For only the third time in over forty years we will be calling a new Sr. Pastor to lead St. John’s.
After a Senior Pastor announces his retirement/resignation, the Church Council serves as, or appoints, a Search
Committee. After establishing a vision for pastoral leadership (gifts, qualities, attributes, expectations, etc.) in
accord with Article VIII of the Constitution, the position is announced through a variety of places (web sites,
seminaries, etc.). Interested individual’s present resumes to be reviewed by the search committee.
When the Search Committee has selected the person they feel God has called to be the new Sr. Pastor, they (the
Search Committee) present the candidate to the Church Council for approval and formal nomination to the
Congregation.
Following the nomination, several opportunities will be made available for the congregation to get to know the
candidate and his family. This process concludes with a sermon delivered during Sunday morning worship.
This process is done in accordance with our Church Constitution: ARTICLE VIII, SECTION 7. The Council shall nominate one candidate for Pastor to be voted upon by the
Congregation. The Congregation shall consider only one candidate at a time and shall vote by ballot for his
election or rejection. A Pastor is considered to have been elected if he is acclaimed by a two-thirds majority of
those communicant members attending the Congregational meeting, provided a quorum is present. A quorum is
said to be ten percent of the communicant members. (con’t)
A congregational meeting will be called to order before the first service on the day the prospective pastor
preaches and adjourned after the last service of that day. A congregational vote, by ballot, will take place at the
conclusion of each service on that day. Votes will be tallied and results announced following the last service.
THIS WEEK AT ST. JOHN’S (please fill out attendance books, prayer cards and card requests located in the pew racks)
