FROM THE DESK OF MONSIGNOR HEITING
THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW VS. THE LETTER OF THE LAW
Most everyone knows that Catholics (and all Christians) are obliged to keep the Ten Commandments. For most of us, keeping those commandments is a “work in progress.” Imagine that you were a member of the Jewish community at the time of Christ. If you were, you would discover that the Jews had 732 laws to keep in order to be a faithful Jew. Imagine that! Now keeping the Ten Commandments suddenly doesn’t seem so hard! Part of the Jewish law had to do with purification rites, both of the body and of more mundane things such as cups, jugs, kettles, beds, etc. Such is the focus of this weekend’s gospel from St. Mark. Some Pharisees and scribes zero in on the fact that some of Jesus’ disciples appear to not be following all of the purification rituals before a meal. Our Lord takes this group to task for focusing on external realities rather than on interior change and conversion. Perhaps this is good food for thought for the upcoming week. We can ask ourselves: “Am I too critical and driven about keeping the exact letter of the law vs. the spirit of the law when it comes to my human relationships?”
BRINGING THE OFFERTORY GIFTS AND THE SUNDAY COLLECTION TO THE ALTAR
Thank you very much for your patience with me as you help to break in a new pastor. I know that this is no easy task! I am gradually coming to an awareness of how I can best function as the presider at Mass so as to better lead all of us in prayer. One adaptation that I would like to make is the procedure for bringing the offertory gifts and the Sunday (or Saturday night) collection to the altar at the weekend Masses. I would ask the ushers to please take up the offertory collection after we have prayed the creed together and while I am seated in the presider’s chair. Then, after the collection has been taken, it can be brought to the altar along with the gifts of bread and wine. The collection can be placed in front of the altar, and the water and wine can be given directly to me as I’m standing at the altar. To bring up the gifts of bread and wine along with the weekend collection represents the totality of our gifts to God. We are not only offering gifts from the earth (bread and wine) but we are offering our monetary gifts as well. While the ushers will have to retrieve the collection from the altar immediately after Mass, I believe that offering all of these gifts together represent a fuller expression of the sacrifices that we are making to our God.
MASS INTENTIONS AND OFFERINGS – AN UPDATE
As promised in a previous bulletin, I want to update you on what I have been told by our diocese concerning Mass intentions and offerings. No parish is allowed to schedule any more Masses than can be celebrated in one year’s time. When there is an over-abundance of Masses and Mass offerings (as is the case in our parish cluster), those intentions and offerings are to be directed to any one of the following three places: IHM Seminary in Winona, to specific retired priests in our diocese in need of Mass stipends, or to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. In the case of excess Mass intentions in Currie, those intentions and offerings can be directed to Father Dick Pommier and his mission work. This is the procedure that we will now begin to follow with excess Mass intentions and offerings until we no longer have an excess. If any parishioner has a question or concern about this, please do not hesitate to let me know. I do appreciate your understanding as we seek to be responsible custodians of the excess Mass intentions and offerings that we have.

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. —For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. — So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, “Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?” He responded, “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” He summoned the crowd again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile. “From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.”
John 6: 51-58
Despite the fact that much about St. Giles is shrouded in mystery, we can say that he was one of the most popular saints in the Middle Ages. Likely, he was born in the first half of the seventh century in southeastern France. That is where he built a monastery that became a popular stopping-off point for pilgrims making their way to Compostela in Spain and the Holy Land. In England, many ancient churches and hospitals were dedicated to Giles. One of the sections of the city of Brussels is named after him. In Germany, Giles was included among the so-called 14 Holy Helpers, a popular group of saints to whom people prayed, especially for recovery from disease and for strength at the hour of death. Also among the 14 were Sts. Christopher, Barbara and Blaise. Interestingly, Giles was the only non-martyr among them. Devotion to the "Holy Helpers" was especially strong in parts of Germany and in Hungary and Sweden. Such devotion made his popularity spread. Giles was soon invoked as the patron of the poor and the disabled. The pilgrimage center that once drew so many fell into disrepair some centuries after Giles' death.

“Praised be you” Pope Francis’ Encyclical on Care for the
Environment
Save the Date! Diocesan Social Justice Day October 17, 2015 Laudato Si’ “Praised be you” Pope Francis’ Encyclical on Care for the Environment Come join us as we dedicate a day to exploring and raising awareness of the seventh theme of Catholic social teaching, care for the environment. We will focus the day on Pope Francis’ most recent encyclical, Laudato Si’, which calls all people to care for God’s creation, our common home. Laudato Si’ takes its title from a recurring line in St. Francis of Assisi’s “Canticle of the Sun” and is subtitled “Sulla cura della casa commune” (On the Care of Our Common Home). Here are five themes covered in the encyclical, and which will be explored during our day: 1. Integral Ecology: Human Ecology and Natural Ecology 2. Our Throwaway Culture 3. Care for Creation 4. Climate Change 5. Building a Culture of Solidarity and Encounter
Details and Registration Information Will Be Sent at a Later Date
