• “THE STATE SHALL PROVIDE FREE AND

COMPULSORY EDUCATION TO ALL CHILDREN

OF THE AGE OF FIVE TO SIXTEEN YEARS IN SUCH

A MANNER AS MAY BE DETERMINED BY LAW”

EDUCATION: CONSTITUTION OF SRI LANKA

• SINCE 1945, SRI LANKA HAS BEEN ENJOYING FREE EDUCATION SCHEME,

• UNDER WHICH EDUCATION IS FREE FROM PRIMARY ONWARDS UNTIL ONE OBTAIN ITS

FIRST DEGREE FROM UNIVERSITY.

• STUDENTS MUST JOIN THE SCHOOL FROM 1ST TO 9TH STANDARD, AFTER THIS, THEY

ARE ALLOWED WHETHER TO CONTINUE THE STUDY, JOB TRAINING OR DOING

FARMING.

Reforms Undertaken

CONCLUSION

THE DIFFERENT EDUCATION POLICIES CLEARLY BRING OUT THAT THERE HAS

BEEN CONCERN REGARDING THE NEED TO REFORM EDUCATION. THE REFORM

HAVE ALSO BEEN CLEARLY SPELLED OUT. HOWEVER, THE IMPLEMENTATION HAS

NEVER MATCHED THE FINE WORDS OF POLICIES. FINANCIAL ALLOCATIONS HAVE

BEEN INADEQUATE. THE RESULT IS THAT IN PAKISTAN, EDUCATION GENERALLY

AND HIGHER EDUCATION, IN PARTICULAR GIVES THE LOOKS OF AN ABANDONED

CHILD.
