AAMMPPRRIIDDEETIRE & AUTO CENTER
Ampride Tire & Automotive CenterIf your car was built in the last decade, there is a good chance that it has a tire pressure
monitoring system to alert you to a low tire. Congress passed the TREAD Act, requiring all motor vehicles built after September 1, 2007
to have a TPMS system. Many cars built prior to that date also have the systems installed. The most common type of system has a battery powered sensor installed in the wheel that
measures the air pressure in the tire and transmits that information to the on-board comput-er. The system may then display a warning light or an actual pressure reading to indicatea low tire. It may also indicate the tire position. It is important when rotating tires to relearnthe tire sensor position to the vehicle.
Ampride Tire & Auto Center has technicians qualified to service the TPMS system on yourvehicle and the tools, equipment and parts on hand to properly service any of your TPMSor tire service needs. From tire repair, sensor replacements and position relearns to tire re-placement, Ampride Tire & Auto Center is your full service tire store.

Ready your car for summer travel The return of warm weather marks the
return of road trips for millions of motoristsacross the country. Whether going to thebeach or heading off to parts unknown, hit-ting the open road with the windows downis a time-honored tradition for drivers of allages. But road trips can prove disastrous ifdrivers don't take the right steps to preparetheir vehicles for summer travel. The fol-lowing are a few ways motorists can en-sure their car is ready to tackle the openroad.
Tighten things up: loose parts, such asexhaust clamps, license plates and interiortrim panels can create rattles and causeparts to get damaged or fall off. What'smore, rattling sounds can be a noisy nui-sance for drivers and passengers alike.Threadlockers can be used to keep the nutsand bolts from coming loose and save partsreplacement costs. Threadlockers are alsomade for plastic fasteners, which vehiclemanufacturers have grown to rely on moreand more.
Wash your car: a newly washed car notonly looks good, but it's often much saferas well. Take your car to a car wash a fewdays before the trip and have the vehiclethoroughly cleaned. A thorough cleaningwill remove dirt and grime from the vehi-cle's undercarriage, not to mention un-sightly bird droppings and water spots orsalt stains leftover from winter.
Fix foggy headlight lenses: many sum-mer road trippers travel at night so theirdays can be spent soaking up some sun atthe beach or lake. Before heading off for
parts unknown, motorists should inspecttheir headlight lenses to reduce risk of ac-cident. If the lenses are yellowed and foggy, that's likely because salt, ozone and roaddebris has dulled them to a point where vi-sion can be impaired, placing drivers andtheir passengers at risk. But foggy lensesdon't mandate an expensive headlight re-placement. In fact, a lens renew kit makesit easy to clean up and polish dull headlightlenses and restore them to like new condi-tion, improving your car's lighting and driv-er visibility.
Check the battery: over time, battery ter-minals and cables will start to corrode, which will eventually eat away at the bat-tery's parts, creating a bad connection thatsooner or later will require the battery to bereplaced. Check the battery before your tripand remember to clean the battery period-ically as part of routine vehicle mainte-nance.
Address windshield nicks and bullseyes:nicks and chips in the windshields are acommon problem regardless of the season.Windshield damage is most prevalent in thewinter because of the extra debris that's onthe road. These nicks and cracks need to getfixed as soon as possible to prevent themfrom spreading and resulting in the needfor a windshield replacement. Often, mo-torists can address nicks and bullseyes intheir own driveways in a matter of minutes. For example, a bullseye windshield repairkit is tailor made for do-it-yourselfers, re-quiring no heating or mixing while ensur-ing each repair is virtually undetectable.
Motorists should perform routine maintenance before beginning a spring or summer roadtrip, such as fixing windshield nicks and restoring cloudy headlight lenses. Photo submitted

Rotating tires is something that manypeople do religiously while others put offthe task until they notice a problem withthe car's performance.
An important component of vehicle up-keep, rotating tires not only extends thelife of the tires, but it also helps ensuresafer driving.
The front tires often bear the brunt ofthe work in vehicle operation. Makingturns or parallel parking requires the forceof the front tires. Vehicles that are front-wheel-drive have front tires that supplythe main motive power for the vehicle, ac-cording to Edmunds.com. The frequentuse and requirements of the tires pro-duces friction on the road, and eventual-ly heat. For these reasons, front tires wear
more quickly than the rear tires. In orderto extend the life of the tires, drivers mustperiodically rotate them.
Tire rotation essentially means movingthe front tires to the rear and vice-versa.This means the front passenger side tirewill be moved to the back passenger sideposition. The same thing will occur on thedriver's side. There's a reason for this.Tires have unique wear patterns that arerelated to the suspension and the align-ment. Should you switch the tires in acriss-cross pattern, it could affect thealignment and lead to a bumpy ride.
These scenarios can depend on the ve-hicle and the tire, however. Certain vehi-cles have tires of different sizes in the rearand front, which prevents front-to-back
rotation. Some cars have tires that areunidirectional, where they are specific toone side of the car and asymmetrical, witha tread pattern that changes from the in-side of the tire to the outside. Thoughthese tires are rare, you can't rotate themat all.
Tire rotation is advisable to preservebalanced handling, traction and evenouter tire wear. But how often should it bedone? Many tires should be rotated every
3,000 to 5,000 miles, even if they don'tshow signs of wear. Some service stationswill do tire rotation at the same time thatoil changes are done because the car is al-ready on a lift.
Don't expect tire rotation to correct wearproblems due to worn mechanical parts oras the result of improper inflation pres-sure.
Rotation is not the only tire mainte-nance task to do to ensure safe tires.

Travel tips for a safe and successful road trip
A good road trip can be the ultimatespring or summer experience. With theopen road ahead, life's troubles seem tomelt.
For a road trip to be successful, it's notjust a matter of taking to the road and put-ting the pedal to the metal. Motoristsshould consider many factors, which canensure safety and peace of mind when be-ginning an excursion. The hot sun thatcan bake the roadway - and your body -can also take its toll on your car, con-tributing to breakdowns.
Maintenance should never be over-looked when it comes to prepping for aroad trip. At the least, The National High-way Traffic Safety Administration recom-mends drivers have their tires, battery, belts, fluids, and air conditioner checkedby a qualified mechanic prior to startingany long trip. But the list does not stopthere. Motorists should heed many otherprecautions before taking to the road.
Be sure to have all necessary docu-ments on hand. Nothing can stall a roadtrip faster than getting pulled over by apolice officer and being without your li-cense, registration and proof of insurance. These are required documents to operatea vehicle, and it's definitely worth a sec-ond check in your wallet and glove com-partment to be sure they are where theyshould be.
Get an oil change. Driving long inter-vals can be taxing on a car engine, as canthe start-and-stops associated with get-ting stuck in road trip traffic. Do yourselfand your car a favor by getting an oilchange to ensure there will be proper lu-brication of the engine and that thick, oldmotor oil won't contribute to a breakdown.
Update your GPS. If you will be usinga GPS device as your primary tool for nav-igation, update the device's maps beforedeparture. Roadways are always beingchanged, and without downloading the
proper updates, you could end up drivingin circles instead of moving on to yourdestination. In addition, many GPS mod-els come equipped with pinpointing pointsof interest, or POI, such as restaurants, tourist areas, hotels, and rest stops, whichshould be updated before beginning thetrip. Follow the guidelines spelled out inthe owner's manual that comes with yourGPS unit. Consumer Reports also advisesknowing the local ordinances regardingGPS use. For example, a windshield-mounted unit is not allowed while drivingin Minnesota.
Plan who will drive when. A long roadtrip - one that will be done primarily inone day - could necessitate splitting upthe trip between two or more drivers. Notonly does this banish boredom, it also re-duces the risk of driver fatigue. NHTSAestimates that approximately 100,000 po-
lice-reported crashes in the United Stateseach year involve drowsiness and/or fa-tigue.
Protect your eyes. The weather and theposition of the sun could change depend-ing on where you are driving. If you wearglasses or contacts for driving, be sure youhave them with you. Keep a few pairs ofsunglasses in your car to shield your eyesfrom sun glare. If the sun proves prob-lematic, pull over for a little while or try analternate route that prevents oncomingsun on the windshield. While you arepacking sunglasses, also be sure to bringalong - and wear - sunscreen, as the sun'srays can be magnified through the win-dow glass.
Bring along refreshments. Frequentstops for bathroom breaks and simply tostretch your legs are advisable, but limitrest-stop fare whenever possible. Not only
do these foods tend to be unhealthy, theyare often expensive. Keep your road tripbudget down by packing healthy food anddrinks that you can enjoy on the go.
Keep on top of your car's fuel level.Play it safe when gassing up the car. Onrural roads or stretches of country withwhich you are unfamiliar, you never knowhow far away filling stations might befrom one another. That means you shouldtake the opportunity to top off the gastank whenever you get the chance. Thisway you always will be confident youhave enough gas to get to the next sta-tion. Don't risk coasting into your desti-nation on fumes, unless you want to ar-rive at your destination hitched to a towtruck.
Be wary of hitchhikers. Althoughhitchhikers are few and far betweennowadays, the possibility still exists tocome across someone thumbing for a rideon the side of the road. Do not pick up astranger who is hitchhiking, no matterhow reputable the person may seem. Ifyou come across someone who has bro-ken down, offer to call for help instead ofallowing the person into the car.
Use the bathroom at every stop. Younever know how few and far betweenrestrooms will be. Unless the idea of aroad-side pit stop is high on your list ofroad trip excitement, play it safe and usethe restroom whenever stopping. Fewthings can make a stretch of road seemmore interminable than the pressure of afull bladder.
Plan for sightseeing. Part of the en-joyment of a road trip is to actually takethe scenic route and enjoy roads whichyou may have never traveled before. Thisis not a race and no awards will be givenout at the end for making good time. Therefore, slow down and enjoy thescenery. Isn't that why you're driving, after all?
On road trips, bring along a friend so that you can share driving responsibilities and fendoff fatigue. Photo submitted

Maintain a healthy environment inside your vehicle Over the last several years, homeown-
ers have increasingly emphasized cleanair in their homes. The growing popular-ity of home air purifiers suggests today'shomeowners want to make certain the en-vironment inside their home is as healthyas possible.
While protecting the environment in ahome is important, it's equally as impor-tant for motorists to maintain a healthyenvironment in their vehicles. The aver-age American spends roughly 10 to 15hours per week inside a car, where dust, odors, smoke and other potentially soursmells can make riding in a car rather un-pleasant.
In addition, air pollution and allergensinside a vehicle can pose a significanthealth risk to drivers and their passen-gers. Fortunately, drivers can take sever-al steps to maintain a healthy environ-ment inside their vehicle.
Improve air quality: perhaps the bestway drivers can ensure their passengershave a healthy environment while travel-ing in a car is to improve the air qualitywithin the vehicle. A clean air systemquickly and effectively purifies the air in-side a vehicle by eliminating harmfulgases, dust, pollen, smoke, odors, andbacteria. The system, which can be easi-ly placed beneath a seat, in the rear of thevehicle or on a seatback, captures big par-ticles including human and pet hair dur-ing the pre-filter stage before the HEPA
filter removes these particles and others, including pollen and pet dander. In thefinal stage, filters remove harmful gasesand even bad odors, such as those causedby smoke, ensuring the vehicle's interioris not only healthy, but also pleasant fordrivers and passengers alike.
Clean the vehicle's interior: many auto-mobile owners pay particular attention tothe appearance of their vehicle's exterior. However, those same drivers don't spendnearly as much time, if any, tending to thevehicle's interior. But a neglected interiordoesn't just fall victim to spills and dirt orother particles brought in from the out-
side. Over time, a neglected interior mightbegin to grow mildew, which is both un-healthy and unpleasant. In general, cleanthe vehicle's interior once a month to pre-vent mildew growth and the buildup ofdirt and grime.
Don't fall in love with the "new carsmell": few consumers can resist thefamed "new car smell." Though enticing, the new car smell is actually an out-gassing of toxic chemicals from newlyformed plastics, and the chemicals inthese gases have been linked to birth de-fects, impaired learning, liver toxicity, pre-mature births, and early puberty in labo-
ratory animals. Though this doesn't meanconsumers should avoid buying new cars,it should inspire consumers to address thenew car smell immediately. A filter caneasily and effectively remove the harmfulgases that stem from the new car smell, while continuously removing additionalodors as the car ages.
Vacuum carpets, floor mats and be-tween seats: carpets and seating are an-other collection point for dirt and pollu-tants and need to be vacuumed thor-oughly. Make sure to get the floor mats, the floor under the floor mats and all theway under the seats. Pound your seatswith something large like a baseball bat toloosen and knock out all the dirt and soilthat has settled into the creases andstitching.
Protect newer vehicles on hot days: hotweather can take its toll on drivers, and itcan also wreak havoc on their vehicle'sinterior. Heat from the sun can cause thevehicle's plastics, vinyl or leather parts toemit volatile organic compounds, or VOCs,which, according to the EnvironmentalProtection Agency, can produce bothshort-term and long-term adverse healtheffects.
Whenever possible, park in the shadeor use a sunshade on the windshield. Inaddition, slightly opening the windows inspring and summer promotes airflowthrough the cabin, helping reduce the riskof VOC buildup inside the vehicle.
An air system purifies air within a vehicle, creating a healthier environment for driversand passengers alike. Photo submitted
