The incident causes long- The incident causes long-simmering frustrations over injustice, poverty and the greed of the political elite to spill over into protests, which are brutally subdued. Bouazizi dies, but in his act of self-immolation, the Arab Spring is born.

Income inequality Income inequality is a focal

point of the Occupy Wall Street protests.

The focus on income inequality by the movement was studied by Arindajit Dube and Ethan Kaplan of the University of Kaplan of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who noted that "inequality in the U.S. has risen dramatically over the past 40 years.

So it is not too surprising to witness the rise of a social movement focused on redistribution.

Context is everything We are at all moments conditioned by the

social realities of our time.

Yves Congar, the great Dominican theologian and cardinal, said that there is a "geography of ideas."

Ideas do not arise from a vacuum but from Ideas do not arise from a vacuum but from various social forces that shape a particular people, place and historical moment.

The challenge is to see the signs of the times before us or we are out of context.

Transformative learning involves experiencing a deep, structural shift in the basic premises of thought, feelings, and actions (prior feelings, and actions (prior knowledge).

It is a shift of consciousness that dramatically and irreversibly alters our

way of being in the world. paradigm.pptx

O'Sullivan, E. (2003) Bringing a perspective of transformative learning to globalized consumption. International Journal of Consumer Studies, 27 (4), 326–330

At the core of Transformative Learning Theory, is the process of "Perspective Transformation." Clark (1991), identifies three dimensions to a perspective transformation: psychological (changes in understanding of

the self)the self) convictional (revision of belief systems)

The Morals of Jesus, Nicholas Peter Harvey,p.61

Where you passion is

Meaning-giving or sense making

Meaning is constructed from our personal and collective insights about life’s purpose and destiny.

According to one author, it "addresses the According to one author, it "addresses the ultimate concerns about the purpose of life ... provides opportunities for significant learning and development in adulthood ... is the center of human experiences and the most fundamental human activity" (Lee, 1999).

Sacrifice part of the job

Love Freely caring and giving

Duty Do it, Cooperate

Faith driven or Spirit-led The way of Jesus

Frustrations Quit or indifferent

Fears Keep it to yourself

Reward Willing compliance

Spirituality is about what we do with the fire inside us, about how we channel our Eros (passion for life). (R.

Rolheiser, The Holy Longing, p11.)

 Spirituality is "the experience of

consciously striving to integrate one's

life not in terms of isolation and self-

absorption, but of self-transcendence

toward the ultimate value one

perceives. (Sandra Schneiders)perceives.

Creating a culture of vocations

Intense inner call – passion for wholeness/holiness –starts with what matters most to you ..

Providential call –God calls

Challenge of Today’s world

Nicholas Boyle, an English philosopher, wrote, "There are no vocations for anyone anymore; society is not composed of people

Providential call –God calls

Call to discipleship –to follow Him

Call to serve the

community.

composed of people who have lives which they commit in this or that particular way but of functions to be performed only as long as there is a desire to be satisfied." A job is just a response to a demand.

Can you re-frame how you see your work?

Do you see work as a job, a career, or a calling?

What contribution are you making?

What contribution would you like to make?

How could your work be more like a calling?

• Being spiritual is no longer limited to doing church-

centered activities.

• Spirituality is inseparable from what deeply affects

human beings and the whole of creation.

• A political act for the common good is a spiritual act.

• A just economic activity presupposes certain holiness. • A just economic activity presupposes certain holiness.

• A socio-cultural appreciation of indigenous wisdom is

part of one’s relationship with the divine.

Genesis 2:7-9 then the LORD God formed man from th e dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the e ast; and there he put the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for foo d, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of goo d and evil.

I am the image of the earth. (imago mundi)I am created in the image of God. (Imago Dei)I am created in the image of God. (Imago Dei)

Organism without water, life can not exist. According to the study of human physiology, body consists of more than 70% of water which distributes throughout the body organs.

Human life begins in an amniotic fluid (Hexagonal water) bag in the uterus of a mother in embryo.

The quantity of water in our body declines as we aged. declines as we aged.

• A seven week old embryo is composed of 95% of water

 • A seven week old baby consist of 75% - 80% of water

 • An adult consists of 65% - 70% of water and 50% for the old aged

COSMIC DISCONNECTEDNESS

The ecological crisis today is rooted in the opposition between humanity and nature.

If nature is a thing or simply an object, it has no right or it is not sacred. has no right or it is not sacred.

The impact of dualism gives rise to relationships marked by distinctions and hierarchies: between persons and nature, man and woman, God and world, rich and poor, sin and grace.

From the perspective of liberation, social injustice leads to ecological injustice, and vise versa. Both are driven by greed and denial of the nature of interdependence.

We must be committed to making joint decisions … aimed at strengthening that covenant between … aimed at strengthening that covenant between human beings and the environment, which should mirror the creative love of God, from whom we come and towards whom we are journeying.’

- Pope Benedict XVI, Caritas in Veritate, 50

SPIRITUALITY OF INTERCONNECTEDNESS

Our relationship to God as it grows in the

context of our relationships with the

cosmos in its totality -cosmos in its totality -

 the dynamic and interdependent web

of relations

 centering on God’s presence in

creation and

 growing to solidarity, inclusivity, and

compassion in the way of Jesus.

Gender Sensitivity

Women must see that there is no liberation for them and no solution to the ecological crisis within a society whose fundamental model of relationship continues to be one of domination.

From 2001 to 2008, there is an estimated one woman victim of violence every one hour and 56 minutes.□ one woman is battered every one hour □ one woman is battered every one hour and 50 minutes □ Based on data from the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Women’s Desk, from 2001 to 2008 there is an average of 6,132 documented cases of women victims of violence per year. □ There is an average of 2,516 women victims every year that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) handled from 2001 to 2008. http://cwrweb.com/

The land is being ravished, and so are we as women.

The land is being overworked, and so are we as women.and so are we as women.

When will it end, this abuse of our mother's and women's bodies?

 Let the violation stop.

 Let the land and women

 Rest from giving.

To rest means To rest means time to regain

 Our lost strength and energies,

 Our lost identities.

They must unite the demands of the women’s movement with those of the ecological movement to envision a radical reshaping of the basic socio-economic relations and the underlying values of this society.

(Rosemary Radford Ruether)

Our reading of our social context reminds us of the imperative of social transformation: how are we going to proclaim the Reign of God where the poor are dying prematurely, where women and children are excluded and the earth becoming a toxic wasteland?

We need to go beyond the power-over

relationship model.

Human beings are called to create just

relationships.

Outside inclusivity and partnership, there

is no community.

Partnership

• What are the key elements?

Realize and be mindful that the entire universe is inter-

related and inter-woven.

Recognize and encourage active and full participation

of women in transforming society and the Church.

Reclaim indigenous knowledge and wisdom for all Reclaim indigenous knowledge and wisdom for all

humanity.

Shift from knowledge through

domination to communicative domination to communicative

knowledge.

Cultivate caring and nurturing qualities

in human beings as opposed to

dominating and exploitative behavior.

• Develop an inner ecology of the mind

through integral human development.

• Celebrate the similarities which connect

people as well as the diversity that reinforces

their cultural identities.

MutualityMutuality Transformative education is coming

home to the basic insight that mutuality is at the heart of meaningful and truthful connections and relationships. relationships.

A paradigm shift is called for - from domination to mutuality, from consumerism to sound eco-living, and from unilateral power to partnership.
