Class Timetable With new members enrolling, current members
promoting in rank and becoming old enough for
certain classes, the class timetable must be
reviewed to maintain the quality of classes. This
may cause some inconvenience to some, but
we must cater for the majority. Centres that we
hire to run classes, also change policies and
circumstances periodically, which also impacts
how/when we run classes. A full timetable is on
the last page of this newsletter which will run for
the remainder of 2019. Here are the major
changes:
LOCKS HEATH
Saturdays
9:00am to 9:40am
Lil’ Dragons, Junior White & Yellow Belts
9:45am to 11:10am
Junior Orange to Black & Youth, All Ranks
11:15am to 12:45pm
Teenagers & Adults, All Ranks
(no changes to Monday’s for now)
HAMBLE
After an increase in attendance over the
summer to the Tuesday classes, the schedule to
remain as it is. However, Tuesday, Thursday &
Sunday classes are now being run in the Sports
Hall for the foreseeable future. This also gives us
regular access to our storage cupboard 3 times
a week. Having direct access to all our training
equipment will give classes a fresh burst of
variety once again.
Mondays will continue in the school hall and
Wednesdays in the Pavilion.
BISHOPS WALTHAM
Although there will not be any changes to the
schedule at the Jubilee Hall, our Brazilian Jiu
Jitsu trials will begin as of September. After 3
popular introduction classes recently, we will be
running 2 BJJ classes each month* from 7:30pm
to 8:30pm on Friday’s. These will be open to ages
10 and above. Those who are not already
subscribed to BJJ will get the chance to try out
these classes until November. If popularity is high
enough (and it is looking that way already), then
it will become a weekly class as of January. *dates are listed on the timetable
AFTER SCHOOL TKD CLUBS
ASTC’s will resume as of Friday 6th September.
Specific class dates will be published in each
ASTC Newsletter that will be handed out to
members at the first session of term.

2020 Grading Dates & Structure
Freestyle TaeKwonDo We now have dates for next year’s Gradings:
Saturday 8th February
Saturday 25th April*
Saturday 11th July*
Saturday 3rd October
Saturday 12th December *to include Higher Rank & Masters Grading
Although there are still 5 opportunities to Grade in
2020, there aren’t equal gaps between each
Grading Event. We have always run Gradings to
follow an 8 to 10 week cycle, however with school
holidays, bank holidays etc. Grading times have
often clashed with other events. So, for 2020,
Grading dates have been placed around other
scheduled events and holidays in to hopes to
minimise dates clashing. This will be mean that
most Grading gaps will be 11 weeks apart, giving
members more time to prepare for their next rank.
February 2020 Grading Date Some may notice that the February Grading has
been brought forward 2 weeks compared to
previous years. This essentially shortens the gap
after the new year before the next Grading
opportunity, hopefully to encourage members to
return to training quickly after the 2 week break
over the festive period. It also allows a better
starting point for the modified Grading dates.
Another point to note for this date is that due to
prior bookings, Hamble will NOT host this event,
instead we will run this event from the Lockswood
Community Centre in Locks Heath instead. All
other Gradings will take place at Hamble as usual
throughout 2020.
Higher Rank & Masters Gradings 2020 is a year to note for many of our members, as
they are due to Grade for some of the highest
ranks achieved within Phoenix SMA so far:
2nd Degree Black Belt
William Holloway George Hunt
Maryanne Carroll Toby Hunt*
Deagan Lief Owen Marshall*
David Hunt* Emma Godwin*
3rd Degree Black Belt
Emily Smith* Kailan Mason *eligible in 2019
Master Grades
James Godwin – 5th Degree Master Black Belt
Matt Marshall – 6th Degree Master Black Belt
You should see the above listed members
attending classes with you more often in the lead
up to their big Grading as well as see them
Grading with you in 2020. As you can see, there
are also “2” Master Grades due as well!!!
Self Defence Systems The SDS Curriculum is currently going through a full
overhaul and review to what each rank/level
should be capable of and to what skill level. This
should be finalised by 2020 and so anyone who is
eligible to Grade up in this year is encouraged to
attend the Grading Event on Thursday 12th
December. As of 2020, there will only be 2 SDS
Gradings scheduled; 4th June & 17th December.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu All Belt Gradings must be carried out by BJJ Black
Belt Kevin Hall and will be scheduled if/when
needed. Although there is no set date, we are
likely to have our first Grading in 2020. This may
include some of our Junior Members promoting to
Grey with White and Adult Members to Blue Belt!!!
Stripes will continue to be awarded when earned.
Each Stripe can take 6 to 9 months to achieve,
depending on how often members attend classes
and how much they progress.
Upcoming Events There are a few events left for 2019, including
Gradings (TKD & SDS), Tournaments and our
Annual Presentation Evening!!!
These event dates are listed on the first page,
but here are some details about the
Tournaments and Presentation Evening:
Reading TKD Tournament
Senior Master Lewendon’s annual tournament
that will run at the FBC Centre in Reading,
completing our Champion of the Year tables
and will finalise titles for 2019!!! Full details and
how to sign up will be available in October.
ITC TKD Open Tournament, Swindon
Although Phoenix SMA hasn’t been as active on
the Open TKD Circuit this year, some members
have kept it in gear and pushed on with it. There
is one more event that Phoenix SMA members
can attend this year. Some entered this event
last year, and it was well run. Unfortunately, due
to a change of circumstances Senior Instructors
cannot attend themselves. If you are still wanting
to enter, please speak to Mr Marshall.
Annual End of Year Presentation Evening
Each year, this event has grown bigger and
bigger, and so we have had to relocate it. This
year we will host our Presentation Evening at the
GE Sports & Social Club (aerostructures) in
Hamble on Friday 13th December. Tickets will be
£8.50 for 18+ and £6.50 for 3 to 17 (under 3’s are free).
