The Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpich International Championship is set to run from July 12-22, with teams from around the globe competing for titles in six different divisions.
“We’re all very excited for it to begin,” said tournament chairperson Greg Timm.
This year’s event – which is now in its 20th year, including the event’s Canada Cup predecessor – will feature more than 80 teams. The format of the event is much the same as in previous years, with women’s international, women’s elite, Futures Gold and Select (U19) and Showcase Gold and Select (U16) divisions.
The four top-ranked teams in the world are among those taking part in the women’s international showdown
this year – the USA, Canada, Australia and the two-time defending Canadian Open champion Japan national team. China-Nanjing and Venezuela are also in the field.
“We often think how lucky we are to have the top four teams in the world in our tournament, because it’s not very often that all four play in the same event at the same time,” said Timm.
In the championship game of last year’s Canadian Open women’s international division, Japan edged the U.S. 9-6.
This year’s international competition may hold even more significance than usual, as it’s not only a precursor to the 2014 Women’s World Cup – slated for the Netherlands next summer – but also because fastpitch is on the shortlist to return to the Summer Olympics; a decision on the sport’s Olympic fate will be announced later this year.
Softball and baseball were dropped from the Games in 2012 and 2016.
“It was a mistake to take softball out, so we’re hoping to put on a great tournament, and show delegates that it should be back in,” Timm said. “We know that this week, the world will be watching South Surrey.”
Canada’s entry into the tournament will feature many faces familiar to longtime Canadian Open spectators. Among those players on the senior women’s national team roster – which was announced June 21 – are veteran returnees Megan Timpf, Caitlin Lever and Jenna Caira, while Lower Mainland natives such as Marina Demore (Richmond), Sara Hopwood, Kelsey Haberl (Burnaby) and Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge) will also be on the team. All four players are also alums of the White Rock Renegades program, which plays out of Softball City.
The women’s elite division – which runs June 13-21 – will feature the Canadian Open debut of a team from India, as Champions Sport Club are
set to take part in the event for the first time, competing against elite-division returnees such as the Quebec Rebelles, Team BC and the White Rock Renegades.
The Select divisions of both the Futures and Select tourneys will run July 12-15 while the Gold teams will square off July 15-21. Both tournaments will feature plenty of homegrown talent, as teams slated to take part include the White Rock Renegades, Surrey Storm, Richmond Islanders and Victoria Devils, among many others.
In addition to Softball City – where the women’s international and elite games will be staged – other venues for the Canadian Open include Sunnyside Park (15455 26 Ave.) and Cloverdale Athletic Park (6410 168 St.).

10 SUPPLEMENT - Surrey/North Delta Leader / Peace Arch News / Langley Times Tuesday, July 9, 2013
Locals to Watch1. Meg DAvieS plays third base on the
Cloverdale Fury 97 team. She is a fourth-generation ball player with an exceptional glove and arm. Her great-grandfather was an all-star shortstop, an executive member of the Cloverdale Baseball Association, and founder of the Cariboo District Little League. Her grandfather was also a shortstop and once struck out 22 batters in a nine-inning provincial playoff game. He later coached Davies’ father, who was also an avid baseball player. Davies’ effort, determination and leadership stood out at tryouts and proved to be exactly the type of player coach Jim Ulluck was looking for in order to build the Fury program.
2. RAcheL PicToN, cARLyN DeRAPP and TAyLoR WeLLeR are new additions to the Fleetwood Force 97B and all three are stand-outs for their incredible speed. The three are what the coaches refer to as “Speed Burners” – athletes with greater-than-average speed who can burn around the plates faster than anyone. With the help of this trio, the team is set to be a top contender at the ballpark.
3. FLeeTWooD FoRce 95B – The Fleetwood Force senior team is modestly described by their coach as a “simple team,” but they have proven that they are a true testament to playing for the love of the game. Each of the 13 team members volunteer their time to the Fleetwood Fastpitch Association’s
Learn to Play, Blastball Run and Jumpstart programs as coaches for the younger players in the community. Within the Fleetwood Force Association they serve as mentors to the younger teams, continually donating their time and skills for the love of the game.
4. Busiest gal in the sport – Power hitter and all-round athlete KAiLA BuTLeR is playing with the Delta Heat 98A this year – her second year playing Bantam A ball. Last season, she hit eight home runs (including a grand slam) as an underage player. She scored the only home run of the season against the Delta Heat 96 team, which went on to win the National Championships. The previous year, Butler hit 14 home runs during the season. She is an honour roll student at Terry Fox Secondary, a member of volleyball and track and field teams (excelling in shot-put and discus recently at the BC High School Track and Field Championships). She was picked up as an underage ringette player to be a member of Team BC in 2012, and her team went on to win the Western Canadian Ringette Championships. Last year she switched from ringette to hockey, never having played before, and was selected to the Tri-City Predators Bantam A1 – with whom she scored her first goal during provincials this year. Butler is a level two softball umpire and and has been umping for four years. She is also a volleyball referee at her old middle school. She is a five-year volunteer with the Special Olympics Softball Tournament held in Port Coquitlam.

12 SUPPLEMENT - Surrey/North Delta Leader / Peace Arch News / Langley Times Tuesday, July 9, 2013
She hAS mADe A NAme for herSeLf STeALiNg bASeS, but only honest effort got Larissa Franklin onto the national women’s softball team.
The Maple Ridge softball product and college standout went through three days of fitness testing, baseball drills, and numerous intra-squad games against the best women in Western Canada. At the end of it, she was one of only four B.C. girls picked for the team.
Franklin had a healthy lead, in the fact that she had already played for Team Canada at the junior women’s level – competing in the World Championships in Capetown, South Africa in 2011. Canada placed fifth at that tournament.
“That got my name out there, but I still had to work my butt off,” said Franklin.
“Making Team Canada has been my only goal and dream my whole life,” she told The News.
“It’s pretty cool to walk into a stadium in a Team Canada jersey.”Her speed on the basepaths had already got her a role with the senior
team – she entered the Canadian Open in Surrey last year as a pinch runner.
Making the team as a starting outfielder will cap another great ball season for Franklin, who won many accolades for her season with the IPFW (Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne) Mastodons. She was on the academic all-district team, named for success on the field and academically, as she is studying biology and working to become an occupational therapist.
She gets on base, and then makes things happen.
Franklin is batting .358 through her first two years with the program, scoring 83 runs, fourth most in program history, while her 53 stolen bases are a career school record, as she owns each of the top two single-season stolen base totals in program history.
“Any opportunity, I look to go,” she said. “I don’t like to stay on first base.”“My coach expects me to steal every time I get on base.”That same terrier quickness also makes her a formidable defender.
Franklin’s centre field is where fly balls go to die.She is part of a program on the upswing, as the Mastadons won their
conference, and went to the regionals for the first time in school history. It was a unique experience, playing in big, beautiful stadiums, packed with ball fans.
“Americans take their sports seriously,” she observed. There’s more of the same in store this summer. She will play in the prestigous Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch
International Championship, July 12-22 in Surrey. Team Canada, currently ranked fourth in the world softball standings, will compete against the world’s top-ranked teams – including Japan, USA and Australia – in the Women’s International Division (July 16-22) at Softball City in Surrey. Also competing in this division are Team Venezuela and China-Nanjing.
They will also be at the US World Cup of Softball from July 11-14 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Making the team was the first goal, now Franklin wants to put up some numbers and get noticed. Three times a week she is swinging bats at an indoor fastball facility in Abbotsford, under the auspices of former men’s national fastball team member Dave Petkau.
She still has a goal to achieve – a final squad of 17, after additions and removals from this group, will represent Canada at the Women’s Pan American Championship, from Aug. 10-18 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The next goal is to be on that team. For information on the Surrey-based tournament visit www.

Chelsea Jenner’s ascendant softball career necessitated some creative thinking when it came time for her high school
graduation this week.Jenner had been slated to march with
her Grade 12 classmates at Abbotsford Christian Secondary in commencement ceremonies on Tuesday evening.
But the previous Saturday, following tryouts for the Canadian junior women’s national team in Toronto, the centre fielder received word that she’d cracked the 17-player roster.
That meant she’d stay in Ontario prepping for the International Softball Federation’s Junior World Championship, which runs July 1-7 in Brampton.
Jenner and Abby Christian principal Gerry Goertzen had a contingency plan for such a scenario, though. Before Jenner departed for tryouts, she shot a video with Goertzen of her walking across the stage in cap and gown to accept her diploma. The video was to be played during the commencement.
“It’s pretty short, but it’s kind of nice,” she said. “Basically, I just said (in the video), ‘Sorry I can’t be here, I’m playing in the World Championships.’
“I think my parents are kind of upset I’m not able to walk across the stage,” she added with a chuckle. “It’s kind of bittersweet, but I feel like this is such a great opportunity that I don’t mind missing it.”
Shooting the video before actually making the junior national team might indicate a level of confidence heading into the tryout, but Jenner wasn’t taking anything for granted.
“To be honest, I was pretty nervous,” she said. “Everyone who was at the training camp, I felt we were all pretty equal. I didn’t know how they were going to make the decision.
“But I found out on the Saturday morning that I’d made it, and I was so excited. I keep pinching myself that it’s real.”
The Junior World Championship will feature 16 teams, and Canada’s half of the draw also features the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Korea, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela.
Canada opens against Venezuela on July 1.“We’re going to be competing in Canada, for Canada, on Canada Day,”
Jenner enthused. “That’s super exciting.”Jenner, who has a softball scholarship to San Jose State University
lined up this fall, will also participate in the prestigious Canadian Open International Championship at Surrey’s Softball City, July 12-22. She’ll suit up for both her club team, the Surrey Storm, and the B.C. provincial squad.
