Spartacus

Lesson 23 part 5

Rome's large population of slaves caused problems. Most slaves, who were free in their own homelands, were treated brutally by their Roman masters. Desperate for freedom, the slaves would soon rebel.

Rome A

• In 73 B.C., a slave named Spartacus, who was being trained to be a gladiator, gathered an army of more than 100,000 escaped slaves.

•  They successfully fought the Roman army for two years.

Rome B

• In 71 B.C., the Romans, led by Crassus, surrounded the slave army, and defeated them.

• Spartacus and 6,000 other former slaves who survived the battle were crucified.
