FROM THE CLASSROOM Creativity is nothing new at SHS, but Miss
Garrison may have raised the bar one more time. After EL students read the story, “The Keeping Quilt,” by Patricia Pollaco, she pro-posed a project on donorschoose.org for her own students to create quilt squares about their lives and cultures. The requirement is for each student to create a symbol on a quilt square, then write a paragraph about what the symbol means. Her grant request was for $250 to purchase cloth, markers, glue, fabric paints, and the like. Within two days, the project was completely funded. Very nice!
EXTRA-CURRICULAR Congratulations to the Winter Color Guard
for finishing second at the Indiana High School Color Guard Association’s Divisional Finals for Regional Class A. If that wasn’t enough, they also took first place in two of the five sub-categories! Congrats on an amazing season in which they placed in the top four at all invita-tional competitions, despite being in a new class of Indiana High School Color Guard As-sociation in which there are over 30 competi-tors. Mr. Copeland, Band Director, reports, "I am particularly proud of our color guard this season since many of the girls are new. The guard has demonstrated a lot poise and grace on and off the court. A special kudos goes to the staff of Brielle Webb, Sarah Davis, and Scott Lee for bringing these girls so far in such a short amount of time." SHS Color Guard—Southport High School salutes you!

OUT OF THE CLASSROOM As an IU Honors Program participant,
Emma Hughes received official notice that she will be studying in Valencia, Spain for seven weeks this summer. Emma will make an hon-orary commitment to speak only Spanish as she lives with a host family and becomes fully immersed in the culture. This experience typi-cally leads to testing into the fifth semester of foreign language IU. Congratulations, Emma!
EXTRA-CURRICULAR The White River Academic Team made it to
the Final Four of the State Tournament on Sat-urday, March 19. SHS is 1 of 2 teams in a field of 25 that went undefeated in the first round of the tourney. The Cards walloped Zionsville (2010’s National Champions) in the first round. After winning by 100+ points, one of the tour-ney readers turned to the kids and said, “Who are you? I never heard of you. You guys are
good!” Jonathan Goodwin, Daniel Smedema, Nick Andre, Dan Arndt, and Travis Waymon are to be commended for outstanding perform-ances. They continued to be amazing in a very gracious loss to Zionsville in the last round. A big thank you goes the team and coaches for showing the world The Southport Way.
The cornerstones of National Honor Society are scholarship, leadership, service, and char-acter. On Sunday, March 13, 7 seniors, 44 juniors, sponsors, and families celebrated their induction into Southport High School’s National Honor Society. Congratulations to all!
ATHLETICS A big congratulations goes out Wes Oliver
who signed his letter of intent on March 23 to play soccer and study at the University of Indi-anapolis. Wes has been a powerhouse during his Southport soccer career—UIndy has re-cruited well! We are proud of you, Wes.
The Athletic Department has partnered with Compton Strategies to host a concert at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, featuring the Ameri-can English Beatles. This tribute band from Chicago promises to be a good time for all while raising funds for Southport Athletics. Please contact the Athletic Office for tickets.

March 14, 2011 Points of Pride #30* Southport High School
FROM THE CLASSROOM It is in the classroom that all students find
endless opportunities to achieve and become. For the past two decades, KIPS (Kiwanis Im-proving Performance at Southport) has cele-brated those achievements of Southport High School students. Last Thursday, several stu-dents were once again selected and honored by the Kiwanis based upon standards of excel-lence for attendance and GPA improvements. Underclassmen who received $25 gift certifi-cates from our community partners included: freshmen Stephen Averitt, Kendall Bowles, Rachael Samm, and Kacey Smith; sopho-mores Alexandria Bishop, Carly Chappell, and Sydney Peacock, and Andrea Reinhart; and juniors Leigh Bowles, Emma Hughes, Florence Salamone, and Dylan Scott. In the end, sen-iors appropriately took center stage as they re-ceived financial support to further their educa-tions. Receiving $1000 scholarships were Corey Sterrett, Shelby Turner, Chelsi Angelo, and Kirstie Pieper. Sui Tin Tial graciously accepted her well-earned award of a $5000 scholarship for her accomplishments at SHS. Tom Dunham, a major contributor, made the journey from Florida to attend the event. He reportedly told Ms. Brouwer that, “Money is just on loan from God for who-ever needs it.” Thank you, Mr. Dunham and the Kiwanis, for recognizing and supporting Southport students. Thank you, students, for setting the bar high for all to see and celebrate!
OUT OF THE CLASSROOM Mr. Lezon and Mrs. Tempest took govern-
ment classes to Dan Burton’s Youth Leader-ship Conference at Hamilton Southeastern last week. The main topics of discussion were im-migration and health care reform. It was with great pride that Mrs. Tempest reported that, “Our kids seemed to be the only ones who actually understood the issues and asked intelligent questions.” Lezon went also. The photo is the courtesy of Dan Burton’s website.
VIC award winners recently celebrated with their parents, teachers, and Mr. Mahoney at IHOP, one of our community partners. Alex T. Myers was honored from the PE/Health Dept., Chelsea Brothers from the Math Dept., and Ross Mappes from the Music Department. We are proud of our Very Important Cardinals!
ATHLETICS Congratulations are in order to some of our
Southport athletes. Brandon Underwood and Treavor Gebhart have both received scholar-ships and signed letters of intent to the Univer-sity of St. Francis located in Fort Wayne to play football (NAIA Division 2 school). Also of noteworthy recognition are the accomplish-ments of Carlton Byrd and Brandon Under-wood who have been voted to the Region 7 All-Star Team which makes them finalists for the Indiana North/South All-Star game in July. If either of them make it, this will be the 6th all-star from SHS in the last 6 years. What a feather in the cap these things are for SHS!

March 7, 2011 Points of Pride #29* Southport High School
FROM THE CLASSROOM Ms. Jarchow selected two essays from
grades 10, 11, and 12 English students in January to represent Southport in the PTSA Citizenship Writing Contest. We are extremely proud to announce that both of Mrs. Junge-mann’s seniors placed in state level competi-tion. Katie Hamilton placed third and Shelby Karnes placed first! Plans are in the making for Shelby and Katie to attend a banquet that will honor all winners. Congratulations, ladies! Keep writing in college next year!
EXTRA-CURRICULAR Mr. Sanders
received a sincere thank you from Terri Bradley, Associate Executive Director of the Baxter YMCA. Southport Key Club members have volunteered for the Holloween Party, Breakfast with Santa, Gingerbread House, and a variety of family night programs. During the past 2 months, several Key Club-bers assisted in youth basketball. In her words, “Thank you for providing such a won-derful pool of leaders to help serve the south side community.”
OUT OF THE CLASSROOM Ms. O’Connor has been notified that Span-
ish student Emma Hughes has tested as one of the strongest candidates in the state of Indi-ana and has qualified for the IU Honors Abroad Program in Foreign Languages. She awaits word on her exact placement, but is hoping to spend the summer in Valencia, Spain.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes high school volunteers in each state. In May, they will name America’s top 10 youth volunteers. It is their intent to “put a spotlight on volunteer service activities in the hope to motivate others to consider how they can contribute to their community.” Mrs. Fierce is proud to announce that senior Adrienne Wagner has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service and has earned state-level recognition. She received a Certificate of Ex-cellence from the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. Thank you, Adrienne, for making Southport shine.
ATHLETICS Congrats to Bobby Blackwell who has been
selected to play in the PostYourT East vs. West Class Basketball All-Star Game in April. This is a noteworthy accomplishment for Bobby! Kudos to Coach Peek, also, who has been selected to coach the 4A East team.
The Cardinal basketball team made it to the championship game of sectional play by de-feating Franklin Central last Friday night. This was our first victory over the Flashes in 26 years! Unfortunately, we came up short on the scoreboard against a tough Center Grove team on Saturday, but the Cardinal fans were noth-ing short of spectacular in the stands. Principal Brouwer received complimentary remarks about the exemplary behavior of our students who chose sportsmanlike behavior in the bleachers when there was ample temptation to choose otherwise. We are so proud of our team, coaches, students, and fans who show the world The Southport Way.

From the Classroom SHS Biology teachers know how to grab
student interest with a genetics lab entitled
“Making Babies.” Students are paired and giv-
en pennies to flip. Heads means the child has
a dominant trait and tails equals a recessive
trait. Partners take turns flipping for eye color,
hair color, shape of nose, etc. Once complete,
they draw a picture of the offspring on paper.
Mr. Finkhouse, Mr. Bowen, Mrs. Gillis, Mrs.
Baskett, Mr. Sumner, and Mr. Burk will show-
case student work in rooms and hallways.
The first semester A-B
Honor Roll was the largest
since 2001 with 840 students
in all. Congratulations to the
230 students on the A roster
and 610 on the B roster. The traditional pizza
party celebration was held on January 27 with
100 Papa John’s pizzas from Papa on South-
port Road (he gives us a good deal) and coo-
kies donated by Bob Domack from Subway at
Hanna and Madison. Papa also gives a free
pizza coupon offer if students bring report
cards to the Southport location. A big thanks
to Mr. Mahoney and Mrs. Mader for all the cel-
ebrations they have organized and Ms. Brouw-
er for personally signing all honor roll letters.
Out of the Classroom On January 27 Perry Township Education
Fund held a grant writing workshop at PTEC
from 4-5:30. PTEF is the township’s initiative
to provide funding for creative and innovative
teaching ideas. We are proud that almost one
third of attendees (12 of 39) were Southport
teachers.
Each year the Department of Human Ser-
vices hosts a district wide contest in honor of
Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards were an-
nounced at the Oasis of Hope Baptist Church
on January 18, with dinner provided by King
Ribs. Southport swept both the art and poetry

The WRAL team has qualified for the Na-
tional Academic Championship tournament by
winning their division. This is a huge accom-
plishment and honor for an academic team.

Coach Sumner congratulates Jimmy “Dy-
no-mite” Walker for earning the Cardinal Foot-
ball Lifter of the Month Award for January. Ac-
cording to Coach, “Jimmy has worked extreme-
ly hard, had great attendance, and has been a
tremendous leader. He is very deserving of
this award as he embodies all the qualities we
are looking for in our program.”
Both the girls and boys ended with a 5th
place ranking in bowling sectionals. Christian
Collins finished 12th and Danny McMurtrey fi-
nished 6th. Both advance to regionals. This is
Danny’s third trip to regional play.

January 24, 2011 Points of Pride #23* Southport High School
From the Classroom Ms. Jarchow is proud to report that we had
128 entries in the PTSA Citizenship Contest
this year. The rules dictate that we send only
two essays per grade level. The following stu-
dents’ essays have been sent to compete at
the state contest. Grade 10—Alanna Heath
and Adam Moss; Grade 11—David Dart and
Ethan Hawes; Grade 12—Shelby Karnes and
Katelyn Hamilton. Good luck at state level
competition!
The Family and Consumer Science De-
partment named Keri Reynolds their VIC award
winner (Very Important Cardinal). Keri is a
standout in the class Textiles where she finds
endless opportunities to overachieve. She not
only creates excellent products, but also helps
others. Keri, her parents, Mrs. Musick-
Burchett, and Mr. Mahoney were treated to
breakfast at IHOP on January 20 in her honor.
Extra-Curricular The Cardinal Speech team performed in
stellar fashion last week in a 7-way meet. The
Cards came in 1st with 136 points, with Floyd
Central in 2nd with 83 points. The other 5
teams followed with less than 30 points each.
Scoring 1st place were Kayla Hofmann in Ra-
dio, Anthony Groves in Declamation, Myranda
Kelly in Humor, Jonathan Goodwin in Im-
promptu, Daniel Smedema in International Ex-
temporaneous, Ryan Myers and Dylan Scott in
Memorized Duo, Allison Gaffney in Original
Oratory, and Emmalee Dixon & Robby Knight
in Scripted Duo. Ninety-six percent of the team
placed and won ribbons. Southport’s talent
and hard work won the day! Excellent job.
Coaches Auger, Johnson, and Worley are
proud to announce that Southport’s White Riv-
er Academic League defeated Perry Meridian
57-45 in the Division Championship. This
means the team gets an automatic bid to the
state tourney in March. A big congrats to Jona-
than Goodwin, Daniel Smedema, Dan Arndt,
Nick Andre, and Travis Waymon. Ms. Brouwer
has this message for you: “AWESOME! Well
done, team. I am extremely happy for each of
you and proud of the accomplishment. Good
luck at State!”
Athletics WTHR’s Operation Football and Basketball
are local favorites. Rarely is a cheer team se-
lected to perform two years in a row, but SHS
is the excep-
tion. Despite
being selected
last year, Cheer
Coach Nita
McClellan’s te-
nacity earned
the team a repeat appearance last week. The
team loaded onto a bus and arrived just prior to
the 11:00 news. The live TV performance was
spontaneous and was driven by their best tal-
ent—spirit. They created a chant to promote
Operation Basketball and the Southport Car-
dinals. The following cheer team members
were in attendance: Ashley Haseman, Kristin
Lathrop, Shelby McLaughlin, Hannah Roth-
kopf, Ali DeHart, Peyton McNeely, Angela
Byrd, Erin Carpenter, Alanna Heath, Kory Ko-
segi, and Shaunte Russell. Nice job by Coach
McClellan and the Southport cheerleaders!

Out of the Classroom Raul Tamayo is to be commended for vo-
lunteering time during his senior unassigned
study hall first semester to tutor an EL student
in Pre-Algebra. The student has dramatically
improved his math test scores from F’s to A’s.
Both students are continuing the tutoring ses-
sions second semester. A special thank you to
their counselor, Ms. Underwood, for rearrang-
ing schedules to accommodate this mentoring
opportunity for second semester. In addition,
Raul maintains a challenging schedule which
includes AP Chemistry II, Pre-Calculus, Aero-
space Engineering, English, and Economics.
Kudos goes to both students for excellence.
Wednesday, January 12, staff members
reached in their jean pockets to the tune of
$415 to support Team Southport in the 2011
Race for the Cure. Participants dressed in pink
casual wear to role model support.
Extra-Curricular
Last week it was reported that Taylor Pe-
ters was recognized as President of the Year in
the Best Buddies program. Recently, Ms.
Brouwer learned that Taylor championed over
46 other presidents to earn
this honor. In addition to
her outstanding work with
the club, she had multiple
recommendation letters,
including those from Girl
Scout leaders, club spon-
sors, and the Mayor of
Southport. In Taylor’s words, Best Buddies is
about creating friendships with people with dis-
abilities. “We want to show them that they can
be friends and not feel judged by people who
don’t have disabilities.” Peters has had the
same buddy for three years. They have gone
to every play, musical and One Acts together
at SHS. Peters thinks of her buddy as a sister,
not just a friend.
Athletics The bowling team is representing SHS well
at the lanes. Last week, the girls were led by
Rachel Burwell with games of 171 and 153.
The boys won with 17-3, shooting a season
high game of 1101 and a season high series of
2054. Outstanding recognition goes to Tony
Manuel who had games of 218 and 226, Mark
McMurtrey who had a 254 game, and Danny
McMurtrey whose scores were 220 and 268.
All Lady Card teams were victorious on the
hardwood on Tuesday, 1/18. They will take on
rival Perry Meridian at home on Friday.

January 10, 2011 Points of Pride #21* Southport High School
In the Classroom Thank you for a job well done by the first
semester Entrepreneurship students who
worked together as a team to promote South-
port. Their hand crafted
felt banners are currently
on display in the field
house—one for each var-
sity basketball player.
Upon successful comple-
tion of their senior year,
basketball players are awarded their banner as
a token of appreciation. This would not be
possible without commitment from the school
promotions team.
Out of the Classroom With $1000+ donated this year to Komen,
the semester began with THINK PINK ribbon
sales by Key Club and National Honor Society
members. Thank you, Mrs. Ferguson and Mr.
Sanders, for sponsoring this endeavor.
Thank you to Mrs. Richardson and Ms. Jar-
chow for their efforts so Southport could host
Race for the Cure team captain training. Fifty-
five participants were in attendance to receive
registration information for the April 16 race.
Visit the SHS website where Mrs. Boone has
added a direct link to join Team Southport.
Extra-Curricular Taylor Peters, SHS Best Buddies Presi-
dent, was chosen as President of the Year.
Ms. Brouwer received notification and a certifi-
cate which was then given to her. Taylor has
been dedicated to the Best Buddies program
since middle school and plans to continue her
active involvement at the college level.
Special Recognition Dave Wohler, Administrator of the Indiana
District of Key Club International, recently con-
tacted Ms. Brouwer to express his appreciation
of one of Southport’s finest. In his own words,
“I thought you might be interested in the caliber
of student and human being you have in Mi-
chael Samm.” The highly respected Mr. Woh-
ler cited that Michael’s intellect, compassion,
and commitment to the core values of Key
Club earned him the elected position of 2009-
10 Capital Division Lieutenant Governor for the
Indiana District of Key Club International. Mi-
chael was responsible for the well-being of Key
Clubs in seven Indianapolis high schools. This
included everything from training, dues, and
participation in divisional, district, and interna-
tional events, as well as meaningful service to
their homes, schools, and communities. Dur-
ing 2010-11, Michael is serving as an assistant
to the District Governor. In this role, Michael
has personified “true service leadership. With-
out his stealth, leadership, guidance, and moti-
vation . . . the Key Club District Board as well
as Key Club program would be in jeopardy.”
Congratulations to Michael who exemplifies the
Southport Way.
Athletics On Saturday, January 8, SHS Booster Club
sponsored THINK PINK games, but varsity
suffered a heartbreaking loss to Pike. Boys’
county play begins this week. Come out to
support the Cards.

Out of the Classroom The SHS Social Committee would like to
thank all who helped make Christmas brighter
for so many. Generous staff donations put
smiles on the faces of 30 children (20 of whom
are SHS students). Each received shirts,
jeans, shoes, and special gifts chosen just for
them. A special thank you goes to staff mem-
bers who wrapped gifts which included Miss
Mahin, Mr. Bruce, Mr. O’Brien, Mrs. Worley,
Mrs. Pernell, Mr. Schopper, Mrs. Mader, Mrs.
Oskay, Mrs. Ancelet, and Miss Enterline. The
total amount collected/spent was $2050. Re-
markably, our super shoppers (Mrs. Cullison
and Mrs. Johnson) SAVED $2881.28 by using
discounts and several hundred dollars in Kohl’s
cash! When shopping, remember to thank
Southport Kohl’s for making our season brigh-
ter. An additional thank you goes to Mr. Han-
ley’s yearbook staff for donating 3 yearbooks to
the project. Happy New Year to all!

In the Classroom SHS is proud to claim 28 teachers have
been SIOP trained (Sheltered Instruction Ob-
servation Protocol. The SIOP model is de-
signed to use both content objectives and lan-
guage objectives. Originally created to help
English language learners to gain academic
knowledge as they develop English language
proficiency, these methods are successful with
all learners, aiding a transition from a teacher
centered classroom to a student centered envi-
ronment where student use their language
skills to express the acquisition of content.
Thanks to teachers who use SIOP at SHS.
Out of the Classroom EL teachers are proud to announce that
three of our Chin students have to earned uni-
versity acceptance as a result of academic
achievement. Congratulations to Hlawn Kip
Tlem and Sui Tin Tial who have been accepted
to IUPUI and Dawt Hlei Iang who has been ac-
cepted to Grace College in Northern Indiana.
Dawt is also the recipient of a $20,000 scholar-
ship for her studies.
Long-time social committee members Ms.
Mahin, Ms. Hicks, and Mrs. Watson (retired
English teacher) were invited to the Mavris Arts
and Entertainments Center to the Circle of
Hope Celebration sponsored by Komen. In a
program hosted by Angela Cain of Channel 13
News, a framed certificate was awarded to
SHS in appreciation for our school’s dedication
to the fight against breast cancer. The award
will be displayed in the main office.
A Cardinal Wells Scholar Herman B. Wells devoted his life to building
Indiana University into an academic and cul-
tural institution of international status. Each
year between 18-22 incoming freshmen are
awarded the prestigious Wells Scholarship in
his honor. Southport’s very own Daniel Sme-
dema recently learned that he has been invited
to join this elite group. The merit-based award
includes full tuition, fees, living stipend, option-
al study abroad, summer internship or service
project, extracurricular events, contacts with
distinguished campus visitors, and seminars
that provide an intellectual community with fel-
low scholars. This is a huge honor for Daniel
who exemplifies an extraordinary combination
of academics, cha-
racter, and leader-
ship. Congratula-
tions, Daniel. We
are very proud of
you.

In the Classroom Thank you to SHS counselors who com-
pleted a round of visits to all 9th and 10th grade
English classes. They presented important in-
formation to students about bullying. Simply
defined, bullying is a “series of repeated of-
fenses in which one person leverages power
over another.” Presenters were Ms. Under-
wood, Ms. Barrett, Ms. Brasher, Mrs. Franzosi,
Mrs. McClimon, Ms. Jones, and Mr. Rascoe.
Out of the Classroom Southport is pleased to an-
nounce that the Bully Hotline is up
and running. The hotline provides
students an anonymous method to
report bullying to a trained professional who
will follow protocol to educate and de-escalate
situations in the interests of all involved. The
hotline number is 317-789-4880.
Extra-Curricular Key Club continues to be a major positive
force at SHS. In October, Jessica Romano,
Silvia Torres, Allison Lynch, and Ariel McMiller
attended Key Leader Camp. The event was
Friday-Sunday at Camp Rancho Framosa in
Nashville, IN. They participated in numerous
group activities the focus of which was values,
integrity, and leadership service. Key Club has
already sponsored BooBag candygrams ($310
raised) and trick-or-treating for UNICEF ($60
raised). Recently, they have volunteered in
community Christmas projects such as caroling
at Forest Creek Village Nursing Home. Key
Club has 40 registered members, 20 additional
attendees, and has logged over 400 hours in
service projects. Five officers alone have
logged 200+ hours of service. It is never too
late to join Key Club. Students should contact
Mr. Sanders, Room 112, and get involved.
Cardinal Call-Outs The administration would like to praise stu-
dents and staff for the incredibly smooth transi-
tion that took place last week with our revised
lunch schedule. In a world that is too often re-
sistant to change, SHS continues to prove itself
to be a highly adaptable community that is ded-
icated to constant improvement. It is great to
be a Cardinal.
Mr. Auger reported the actions of two young
ladies who went out of their way to help. Ash-
lyn Griffie and Danielle Vernon found and re-
turned a staff member’s car key. Thanks, gals!
Athletics Congratulations to center Brandon Under-
wood who has been voted 1st Team All-State in
football. It is a big honor to receive this recog-
nition from the coaching community. We are
very proud of you, Brandon!
The wrestling team went 5-0 last Saturday
at the Hagerstown Invitational. Coach Weav-
er’s wrestlers came out on top against all five
of the schools competing. Special recognition
goes out to three Cardinal wrestlers who went
undefeated: Jon Cleary, Brian Boucher, and
Christian Mazza. The team now stands at 8-3.
Men’s basketball is currently 4-1, and the
Lady Cards begin county tournament play this
week at Decatur. Good luck, Cards!

tively.
Extra-Curricular Ms Fitzgerald, Mr. Hanley, Miss Levin, and
Mrs. Whitlock want to express how proud they
are of all the hard work and dedication by cast
and crew for the musical, Cinderella. The pure
enjoyment by the audience (especially by all the
little girls dressed up as Cinderella) made all the
work worthwhile.

From the Classroom Journalism students competed against
some of the best high school journalists in the
country last week at the National Scholastic
Press Association Convention in Kansas City.
In write-off contests, Katja Krasnovsky earned
an “Honorable Mention” in news writing, and
Lucas Sweitzer received an “Excellent” in
computer infographic design. Kinsey Goff
earned “Superior” in the Yearbook Inside Page
Design Contest. This award is considered a
top prize, placing her as one of the top two
competitors. Congratulations to Mr. Hanley,
Mr. Klopfenstein, and the Southport journalists!
Extra-Curricular On Saturday, No-
vember 6, SHS National
Honor Society members
completed another ser-
vice project. Spear-
headed by Shivani Pa-
rikshak (Vice-President)
and Sarah Sewell (Sec-
retary), the project in-
cluded donations from
Church‟s Chicken and
homemade chili, mac „n
cheese, and desserts.
Students served meals
to families of hospitalized children at the local
Ronald McDonald House on the IUPUI cam-
pus. Thank you, NHS!
Of 52 total volunteers at the YMCA Hallo-
ween Extravaganza, 21 were SHS Key Club
members. Organizers of the program compli-
mented our Key Club members as “an amazing
group of young people” and are making plans
to invite them back. Thank you, Key Club, for
representing SHS in outstanding fashion.
Athletics Wes Oliver was named Boy‟s Soccer Ma-
rion County Player of the Year. This is the first
time in history that this honor has gone to a
player from a school other than Pike, North
Central, Lawrence Central, or Brebeuf. Con-
gratulations are also in order to Coach Josh
Brown who is Marion County Coach of the
Year. SHS is proud of both Wes and Coach
Brown for their accomplishments.

From the Classroom According to Mr. Sanders, Integrated Chemistry
and Physics (ICP) students are performing at a
higher level on math applications than in previous
years. In the study of energy and machines, stu-
dents are doing substantial research on energy as
they compare renewable and non-renewable
sources. Working in teams, students are producing
2-page newsletters and PowerPoint slide shows
which depict the impacts, costs, advantages, and
disadvantages of each energy source. Some of
their work is facilitated by IUPUI graduate student,
Forest Andrews, who is a valuable resource to the
science students 10 hours a week. Kudos to Mr.
Sanders, Mr. Andrews, and ICP students for being
engaged in relevant lessons.
A Cardinal Call-Out This week’s Cardinal call-out goes to Mrs. Per-
nell and all those who participated by paying $1 to
dress up for Halloween. This annual event is a
great way to enjoy the spirit of Halloween, but more
importantly, collects funds for upcoming holidays.
Approximately $200 was collected and will go to-
ward purchasing food baskets for Southport fami-
lies who might otherwise not have a special meal
for Thanksgiving or Easter. This is just one of the
many Southport traditions in which we support and
care for each other.
Out of the Classroom Congratulations to Matthew
Gulley for winning McAlister’s BIG
NASTY hit of the week last week.
Matt’s hit forced a fumble to put
the offense back on the field.
Football fans voted at indysportsnation.com where
Matt accumulated 70% of the votes. Nice BIG
NASTY HIT, Matt!
Extra-Curricular Congratulations are in
order to Mr. Taylor’s
CyberCards for partici-
pating in the annual
Bloomington VEX Ro-
botics Competition on
November 6. The team made it to the semi-finals
where they placed 3rd. The team that beat them
ended as event champions. In addition to success
on the field, the team also earned the Community
Service Award for their generous donation of 94
pounds of food, greatly surpassing the 12-can ex-
pectation. Pictured from the event are Raul Ta-
mayo, Nick Green, Cory Sterrett, Nick Whitmore,
Morgan Summers, Alex Song, Colin Turley, Joey
Lane, Brent Rogers, Alex Schutte, Joe Bayer. The
next competition is Lock Tight Night, December 10-
11, at Indian Creek High School.
Athletics Congratulations to all fall athletes on their suc-
cessful seasons. The Cardinal football team suf-
fered a heartbreaker against Lawrence Central last
Friday, 31-27, in the sectional championship game,
but have much for which to be proud. The following

From the Classroom Fashion and Textiles Foundations students
have gone green! Their exemplary efforts for cost
containment have netted them opportunities for
creativity. Their projects consist of fashion purses,
pillows, re-usable shopping bags, and lap quilts that
are being constructed entirely of recycled fabrics,
patterns, and notions. Renew, re-use, recycle!
Thanks are in order to the Guidance and Eng-
lish Departments, EL teachers, and administrators
who have worked together to create a 10th grade
sheltered English class. This will compliment the
9th grade sheltered English class currently being
taught by Mr. Bockelman. Ms. Kohne will be teach-
ing the course beginning second semester.
A big thank you goes to Mr. Ingmire for admi-
nistering the COMPASS TEST (Ivy Tech entrance
exam) on October 19 at SHS to 31 business stu-
dents. Upon passing, students have “dual enroll-
ment status.” While taking Business Law and
Computer Programming at SHS, they are also
“enrolled” at Ivy Tech. This translates to tuition-free
community college credits before graduating from
high school. Appreciation is also in order to the
Technology Department for setting up computers
for the exam.
A Cardinal Call-Out Kudos to Savanah Scaggs for extraordinary
thoughtfulness. She gave handwritten Halloween
cards and candy to each cafeteria lady to show ap-
preciation. If you see Savanah, ask her to report to
Mr. Mahoney for a commendation.
Out of the Classroom Congratulations are in order to the Varsity and
JV White River Academic League teams which are
both 2-0. The Varsity team is averaging second
highest amount of points in the entire league and
only .5 points behind last year’s national cham-
pions, Zionsville. According to coaches Worley,
Auger, and Johnson, a national qualification is a
realistic goal for this team. Varsity members are
Daniel Smedema, Jonathan Goodwin, Dan Arndt,
Nick Andre, and Travis Waymon; JV members are
Levi Burke, Parker Coffin, Alex Howard, Derek
Lane, Anna Laws, Stefanie Maier, Alex Myers, Jo-
sue Reyes, Alex Schutte, Megan Selander, Jordan
Smithers, Craig Westberry, and Nick Whitmore.
Last week’s honor roll pizza party was a big
success with 877 students receiving invitations! Of
these, 223 were “A” honor roll students and 654
were “B” honor roll students. Academics are first
for these students.
Athletics Southport boys participating in the pre-season
basketball program have been evaluated by over
30 different NCAA Division I and Division II pro-
grams and recruiting services since September 8.
Nearly every morning workout in September and
October has been viewed by college coaches look-
ing for potential student athletes. This is a great
opportunity for prospective basketball players.
The Cardinal football team moved
one step closer to a sectional
championship as they defeated
Lawrence North, 34-20, last Friday
in second round play. Treavor Gebhart
connected on 17 of 24 passes for a total of
258 yards and threw for two touchdowns. Adrian
Bussey added more points to the board as he
scored on two of his 11 carries for a total of 128
yards for the evening. The Cards are currently 8-3
and are gearing up for the championship game
against the Lawrence Central Bears this Friday,
7:00 p.m., at Perry Stadium. Good luck, Cards!

From the Classroom Students are using technology
with educational purpose in Family
and Consumer Science classes.
Review questions are projected at
the front of the room and students
have a choice to either use their
own cell phone or a school-
provided laptop to “text their res-
ponses.” As texts are received, response graphs
are projected to report how many students chose
each answer. Open ended questions and res-
ponses are displayed in a similar fashion. This is a
great way to use technology to engage students.
ELL (English Language Learners) teachers
would like to give a call-out to several gracious vo-
lunteers. Nancy Holmes, Michelle Stoneburner,
Diana McAfee, and Sharon Summers are in their
third year of volunteerism tutoring ELL students
during resource periods. New to SHS this year are
service learning volunteers from the University of
Indianapolis, Brent Lederle and Anhdile Ncube.
The commitment exhibited by these volunteers is
well appreciated.
¿En qué le puedo servir? Spanish 2 students
are learning practical dialogue to prepare them for
travel to Spanish-speaking countries. The approach
adds relevancy to curriculum as students learn
communication skills to use at airports, train sta-
tions, and customs, as well as for securing taxis,
accommodations, exchanging money, ordering
meals, and making purchases. Not traveling?
These students may add to their resumes the ability
to greet and serve Hispanics here in Indianapolis.
For the first time in the history of SHS, we are
currently offering Spanish 6. This is credited to the
emphasis placed on foreign language at the middle
school. A big thank you to all Spanish teachers!
Out of the Classroom A big thank you goes to school promotions stu-
dents who stayed after school to decorate the sta-
dium for home football games. A group of approx-
imately 40 students participated, but some students
were committed enough to volunteer for every oc-
casion. These students were Jessica Biggs, Kris-
tiann Hulin, Amanda Lovely, and Zach Conner.
Under the leadership of Coach McClellan, cheer-
leader Peyton McNeely led teammates in the “not
as much fun task” of taking decorations down after
the games. Thank you to all who helped make the
stadium festive for an entire community.
ELL teachers are to be commended for on-
going commitment to students. Mrs. Peddie tutors
on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30-4:00 and
uses the Friday time slot to work on college appli-
cations and scholarships. On Saturday of fall
break, she joined a student-organized trip for senior
Chin students to IU.
Athletics Congratulations are in order to Emily Odle who
broke the school record at the cross country semi-
state. She finished the 5K course in 19:09.8, which
earned her 24th place out of a field of 152 competi-
tors.
The volleyball team finished a record-breaking
season with 21 wins and claimed 2nd place in both
the conference and sectionals. Based on recorded
school history, the Lady Cards can claim this as the
most wins for a team in a single season.
Friday night lights continues this week at Perry
Stadium, 7:00 p.m., in second round of sectional
play against the Wildcats of Lawrence North. Ac-
cording to Mr. Hubert, the first 250 students through
the gate will receive a free rally towel. Good luck,
Cards—take sectional!

From the Classroom On October 11, Mrs. Jungemann hosted her
sixth annual “College Panel Day” for her English 12
Advanced classes. Five college students dedicated
one of their fall break days to speak with SHS se-
niors about university life. They discussed financial
aid, academic demands, time management, and
social life. College Panel Day provides “the real
scoop” from coeds who have successfully transi-
tioned to life after high school and are working to-
ward college degrees.
Congratulations to all who earned Student of
the Month recognition for September: Jessica Al-
loway-Student Services, Sarah Armstroff-Science,
Will Cary-Business, Emma Hughes-Art, Kristiann
Hulin-Main Office, Cody Jones-Math, Casey Kauff-
man-Athletics, Chayse McGuffin-History, Matt Mil-
ler-Foreign Language, Emily Odle-English, Natalie
Rothkopf-Guidance, Stephanie Trinkle-Social Stu-
dies, Natalie Ullrich-Media Center, Uriah Walden-
Family & Consumer Science, Kiersten Watson-
Health, and Seth Worland-Music. These students
are to be commended for their achievement.
Out of the Classroom Over 330 band, choir, and or-
chestra students recently appeared
in three Fall Concerts presented by
the music department. A wide variety of music,
from Bach to W. C. Handy, was performed and en-
joyed by over 1000 spectators who attended the
concerts. Everyone is looking forward to the Winter
Concerts in December.
Congrats to the Southport Cardinal Marching
Band for completing a successful season. They
received a Gold Rating at the ISSMA Festival held
last week at Franklin Community High School.
Southport joined the “Go Passionately Pink for
the Cure” campaign with 75 participants who wore
pink to school on October 13. The event netted
$375 (up from last year’s $316) which will be do-
nated to the Komen Foundation. A big thank you
goes to Mrs. Karushis for organizing this for SHS.
Extra-Curricular Best Buddies is a club that pairs Southport stu-
dents with students who have intellectual disabili-
ties at Rise. The club is doing an awesome job and
is larger than ever with over 50 student members
from Southport High School. They are partnering
with Chick-fil-A at Southport Road and Emerson on
October 21 for a fund-raiser from 4 – 8 p.m. A per-
centage of what you order will be donated if you
ask them to support the Southport Chapter.
The White River Academic team started the
season strong on October 14 with a varsity win
over Shelbyville, 72-36. The junior varsity team did
not disappoint and claimed their first victory as well.
Congratulations to the teams and their coaches,
Mr. Auger and Mrs. Worley.
Athletics Congratulations to Emily Odle who placed 13th
at the Ben Davis regional in cross-country. We
wish good luck to Emily as she advances to semi-
state this weekend.
Cardinal volleyball ended regular season play
19-9 and placed second in Conference Indiana.
Sectional play begins this week at Franklin Com-
munity High School.
Southport’s football team finished regular sea-
son play 6-3 and finished with a second in the con-
ference. The team hits the gridiron again this Fri-
day at North Central in the first round of sectionals.
Good luck, Cards!

October 11, 2010 Points of Pride #10* Southport High School
From the Classroom Many teachers dedicate time after
school for one-on-one tutoring. This
issue highlights the Math Department.
According to department chair, Mr.
O’Brien, several teachers deserve special recogni-
tion. Mr. Mahoney schedules after school study
sessions prior to tests. He claims participation has
increased and scores have improved for those who
attend. Mrs. Pernell usually has anywhere from 5-
12 students in her room three to four evenings a
week, often until 4:30-5:00. Some are not her stu-
dents, but take advantage of her mentorship. Mrs.
Schroeder usually has students in her room both
before and after school working math problems.
She also helps a number of pre-calculus students
who are not able to see Mrs. Ferguson on the
evenings she tutors. Mrs. Rice not only has stu-
dents working with her until 3:30-4:00, she has also
adopted several calculus students as assistants
during her lunch period so they can work on math
together. These teachers are just a few of many
who make SHS a great place for students to learn.
Classy Cards & Community A big thank you goes to all students and staff
members who supported Team Southport and the
Komen Foundation by purchasing pink and red
Southport T-shirts. Your team and school spirit
have provided for $360.05 to be donated to the
Komen Foundation. Kudos goes to Miss Mahin for
once again organizing T-shirt sales.
On October 7 the Lady Cards volleyball pro-
gram sponsored a Night Full of Color & Filled with
Hope. With decorations provided by the Business
Department’s Entrepreneurship students, the vol-
leyball program not only raised the consciousness
about breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and cystic fi-
brosis, but also raised $343 that will be donated to
those causes. What a great way for Coach John-
son to teach her athletes how to reach out and
serve the community.
Performing Arts The Special Topics and Theatre Production
classes will join forces with Southport Elementary
for a fundraising event at the Greenwood Park Mall
Barnes and Noble on October 30. This is a benefit
for the arts in both schools. High school students
will be judging a costume contest, playing theatre
games, and teaching the Thriller dance to the
younger students. A Cinderella promotional scene
(this year’s musical) will also be performed. Our
schools will receive 15% of sales made on that day.
Mrs. Whitlock would like to thank her Theatre
Production class for the September 23 Coffee
House which was a huge success.
The student-run production show-
cased the talents of 32 student per-
formers for an audience of approx-
imately 265 people. All proceeds
will be directly invested back into the program.
Please visit www.shsnewsbureau.com for more pic-
tures like this one and a great video montage.
Athletics Brandon Iaria kicked the game-winning field
goal against Bloomington North with 1.8 seconds
on the clock last Friday. Thank you, Cards, for
making Senior Night even more special with a win!
The big story of the week is Coach Brown’s
MEN’S SOCCER TEAM! For the first time in school
history Southport soccer has claimed the sectional
championship title. They will face Avon at 7:00
p.m., Wednesday, 10/13, at Center Grove in the
first round of regional play. We are proud of you!

In the Classroom Mrs. Karushis’ Life Skills Math students have
been learning the lost art of keeping score when
bowling. She was very proud to see them practice
mental math and problem solving skills as they
bowled with plastic pins in the classroom. The unit
ended with an after-school field trip to Expo Bowl
and “doing the real thing.” Students were empo-
wered by knowing ahead of time exactly what their
score should be before checking the electronic
scoreboard. Way to bowl, Cards!
Out of the Classroom Thank you to the Perry Township Education
Fund whose grant allowed Southport Cardinal Lea-
dership Service (SCLS) to exist. This spin-off from
Peer Tutoring and Cadet Teaching classes offers
responsible Southport students a volunteer oppor-
tunity to serve 5th graders. Mrs. Darla Maillet, 5th
grade teacher at Mary Bryan, welcomed role model
seniors at their Outdoor Education Program at
Camp Allendale on Sept. 29, 30, and Oct. 1. Upon
meeting academic and attendance qualifications,
ten seniors served as student leaders at the three-
day event. Congratulations to the following for stu-
dent leadership and volunteerism: Nam Tran, Alli-
son Hughes, Kristin Lathrop, Ashleigh Laymon,
Cory Sterrett, Kristiaan Hulin, Brent Rogers, Ste-
phanie Hopkins, Reva Johnson, and Ryan Myers.
School Publications Congratulations to Mr. Klopfenstein’s journalism
students who have recently learned that last year’s
Journal is a finalist in the Hoosier Star competition.
The Indiana High School Press Association eval-
uates high school newspapers in search of excel-
lence. Being listed a finalist places Southport’s
newspaper among the top high school contenders
in the state. If The Journal wins the next phase of
competition, a Hoosier Star will be awarded, plac-
ing the publication in elite status among Indiana
high school newspapers.
The number of visitors to the News Bureau
website (www.newsbureau.com) is up from last
year and continues to grow. Students want to en-
courage everyone to continue to visit their site for
news, updates, photos, and videos.
More recognition goes to The Journal for their
initiative to “go global.” In case you haven’t no-
ticed, all issues of The Journal now include at least
one article in Spanish and one article in Chin. Ku-
dos goes out to Mr. K and these fine young journal-
ists who remind all to honor and value our diversity.
Extra-Curricular Southport CyberCards are
partnering with Warren Digital
Goats to host CAGE Match 2010
on October 16 in the SHS Field-
house. This is anticipated to be a fun event for fu-
ture engineers as they showcase their robotics.
Doors will open at 7:00 a.m., with opening ceremo-
nies beginning at 9:00. Matches kick off at 9:30.
There will be a lunch break at noon which will in-
clude pumpkin carving and costume contests. The
event will wrap up at 2:30 p.m. with an awards cer-
emony. All are invited to attend. A big thank you
goes out to Mr. Michael Taylor for organizing this
event. You may read more about it on the web at
www.thecagematch.com. (clipart from website)
Athletics Athletic director, Pete Hubert, has announced
the department’s annual fundraiser. This year they
will be selling ESPN subscriptions. He is proud of
the unity generated among all athletes in a single
effort to support all teams. Plan to order a sub-
scription!

In the Classroom Congratulations to all SHS English teachers!
The National Council of Teachers of English
(NCTE) recognized the English Department for ex-
cellence in instruction based upon achievement in
the 2010 writing contest. Four students were hon-
ored with NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing at
the state level. A Certificate of Commendation for
Excellence in the Instructional Program has been
awarded and will be displayed in the main office.
Of 1,641 juniors nominated by their schools to
participate in the 2010 writing contest, Daniel Sme-
dema not only received state recognition, but com-
peted nationally. Daniel was one of only 15 Indiana
students to earn a national award. Thank you to
Mr. Bowles for leadership in Daniel’s endeavor.
Out of the Classroom Football players who attended Mary Bryan,
Clinton Young, and Jeremiah Gray have re-visited
former schools as mentors to current students. The
impact these young men have upon children who
view them as superstars is superseded only by the
effect the youngsters have upon players who come
to understand the power of their own positive
choices. Kudos goes to Coaches Dugger and
Evans who provide healthy role models to youth,
build strong bonds, and instill a Cardinal tradition.
Cardinal Call-Outs A big ticket item was returned to SHS in perfect
condition last week. Two students found one of the
school’s mini notebooks outside of the building and
returned it to the main office. Ms. Brouwer re-
warded each with a Cardinal T-shirt.
Jessica and Madia Bannie are to be com-
mended for finding money under a student’s desk
and immediately making plans to return it to the
owner. The Bannie sisters are great young ladies!
Extra-Curricular A tip of the hat goes to Mrs. Berghoff and Mr.
Troyer’s speech and debate team for excellence.
Upon achievement of 100 degrees plus last year,
the National Forensic League (NFL) has placed
them in the top 10% of chapters nationwide. This
recognition earns them membership in the NFL’s
prestigious 100 Club. According to the Executive
Director of the NFL, J. Scott Wunn, “This is a re-
markable milestone because it demonstrates out-
standing commitment to teaching essential life
skills—communication, research, listening, writing
and organization.” NFL commends the leadership
of Coaches Berghoff and Troyer and so does SHS!
Daniel Smedema competed in the
Original Oratory division of the National
Forensic League National Tournament
and placed 61st out of 280 qualifying
students in the country. A special thank
you goes to his speech coaches, Mr.
Troyer and Mrs. Berghoff.
Athletics Congratulations to SHS athletes who attended
the 2010 Fall Conference Leadership Retreat.
Conference Indiana students assembled to engage
in leadership activities to experience the power of
teamwork. Athletes in attendance were: Brandon
Iaria, Casey Domek, Nolan Fenwick, Collin Lewis,
Scott Hinkle, Juanesha Byrd, Kortni Haupt, Bria
Wright, Delaney Skutt, and Brooke Gagliola.
The football team did not disappoint as they de-
feated rival Franklin Central last Friday, bringing
SHS to 5-1 for the season and 3-1 in conference
play. Coach Peebles would like to recognize Dar-
rice Orkmon for his excellence on the field during
the last three games. The Cards take on the Bears
in conference play at Lawrence Central next Friday.

In the Classroom Miss Shepler (Mrs. Ferguson’s student teacher,
IUPUI) took the pre-algebra class to the computer
lab to research world records of a favorite sport or
hobby. The students had to represent the data in
decimal and fraction forms and write a paragraph to
explain the data. Hats off to this student teacher for
creatively engaging students to read, research,
process, analyze, and write!
Pre-Vocational Education classes are in their
third year of volunteerism with Panera Bread Com-
pany. Every Wednesday, Mrs. Hanley picks up be-
tween 80-100 pounds of baked goods from the
Greenwood store at closing time to bring to SHS for
distribution by PVE students. Hundreds of families
enjoy the baked goods each week. Thank you!
Out of the Classroom Southport Cardinal Leadership Service (SCLS)
is a program that partners SHS seniors with Mary
Bryan for 5th grade Outdoor Education at Camp Al-
lendale. This year the program is funded by a grant
from Perry Township Education Fund which covers
tuition. An outgrowth of Peer Tutoring and Cadet
Teaching classes, 12 students (recommended by
their teachers) will attend from Sept. 29 - Oct. 1 as
camp counselors. More to come!
SHS has successfully received its third (in a
row!) positive energy audit. Staff is doing a great
job saving money through energy management.
Cardinal Call-Outs Another big Cardinal call-out goes to freshman
Myranda Gourley who found a phone in the hall-
way. She took the phone to Student Services to be
returned to its owner. This is the third student in
four weeks who has returned an expensive item to
the rightful owner. Thank you, Myranda!
Extra-Curricular On September 11, Key Club members teamed
with Angels of the Heart for a day of annual com-
munity clean-up. This is a neighborhood outreach
program spon-
sored by Sacred
Heart Catholic
Church. SHS stu-
dents were
assigned the task of picking up debris along the
railroad tracks in the Raymond Street area. Stu-
dents gained much from their volunteerism and
have already made plans to participate next year.
Athletics The girls’ golf team finished 2nd at Sectionals
and will advance to Regional play hosted by Frank-
lin Central at Smock Golf Course on September 25.
Congratulations, ladies!
The girls’ cross country team gave a stellar per-
formance at the Tipton Invitational last Saturday
and brought home a 1st place trophy. Accolades to
the entire team with special recognition going to
Emily Odle who came in 1st place over all!
Gear up for Oct. 7 for “A Night Filled with Color
and Hope,” when the volleyball team plays to raise
awareness for breast cancer (pink), ovarian can-
cer (teal), and cystic fibrosis (royal blue). Team-
mates’ lives have been affected by these diseases.
Show your support by dressing in full color, Cards.
Homecoming 2010 left nothing to be desired.
Congrats to the freshmen for winning float competi-
tion, to Chelsea Brothers and Treavor Gebhart for
being named homecoming royalty, and the football
team for a victory over Bloomington South, 23-0.
The Cards are 4-1 (2-1 in conference play) and
take on the Flashes at Franklin Central next Friday.

Academics SHS Chin students are making headlines this
year academically. Congratulations to Hlawn Kip
Tlem, Sui Tin Tial, Ngun Hlei Tial, and Hlawn Za
Iang who are National Honor Society members.
Congrats also goes to Dawt Hlei Iang who matches
her high expectations with hard work; this combina-
tion has put her on track to graduate with an Aca-
demic Honors Diploma in May 2011.
Academic Extra-Curricular National Honor So-
ciety members are to
be commended along
with sponsors Mr.
Sanders and Mrs. Fer-
guson for hosting a
Patriot Luncheon on 9-
10. This is a traditional
September thank you
to veterans, police of-
ficers, and firefighters.
NHS members pro-
vided hospitality and
City Barbeque provided a delicious meal in the
SHS cafeteria for all to see to show appreciation. A
special thanks goes to Sarah Sewall for handling
external relations and contacts, Kristin Lathrop and
Shivani Parikshak for decorations, Ryan Myers for
hospitality, and Chelsea Brothers for food arrange-
ments, greetings, and photos.
White River Academic League (WRAL)
Coaches Johnson, Auger, and Worley are extreme-
ly excited about the 2010-11 season. The team
springboards from placing 10th last year at State
and has set their goal to compete at Nationals. A
record number attended try-outs to vie for team po-
sitions.
Southport High School Brain Game team has
received their tournament match-up and will go
head-to-head (no pun intended) against Center
Grove on October 20. Airing will be announced at
a later date.
Extra-Curricular At the Sept. 3 football game, Riley Dance Ma-
rathon Committee used the last minute of half-time
for fund-raising during a “Miracle Minute.” In a
mere 60 seconds, generous fans of SHS dipped
into their pockets to the tune of $522.71. All dona-
tions go to the Ryan White Foundation. Thank you!
Athletics Kudos to Zoey Freese who was named to the
all-county golf team last week. Coach Humbles
and his Lady Cards have a big week ahead as they
play in the Conference Indiana Golf Tournament
and the IHSAA Golf Sectionals. Good luck!
Homecoming Southport is well-known for its strong tradition,
and nothing showcases this more than Homecom-
ing Week. The theme is “SHS: High Score,” in
which video games like PacMan and Frogger will
be creatively woven into the spirit of our football
game. The Cards take on the Bloomington South
Panthers and the evening will hopefully end with
“SHS: High Score.” Festivities are off to a great
start with SPIRIT WEEK dress up days—Monday is
PJ Day, Tuesday is College Day, Wednesday is
Lumberjack Day, Thursday is Video Game Day,
and Friday is Cardinal Flight Night T-Shirt Day.
The annual homecoming parade will begin at 5:30
followed by the game at 7:00. The Homecoming
Dance will be on Saturday night at 8:30 in the cafe-
teria. Dress is semi-formal.

Classrooms Mrs. Gillis’ students share a classroom with
some new critters—axolotls. These amphibians
never leave the larval stage, something called neo-
teny. One observable trait they possess is the abili-
ty to re-grow lost limbs. Students are witnessing
this, as Sabertooth got a little aggressive and bit off
some of Wolverine’s limbs. After one week, Wolve-
rine has almost re-grown an entire arm! They are
both living happily now, albeit in separate contain-
ers. Stop by Room 215 and check them out!
Out of the Classroom We have another “Cardinal Character” call-out
this week going to Braunson Brumley, freshman,
who found a wallet containing money in a restroom.
He took it to the office to be returned to the owner.
This kind of honesty is always to be commended.
Established in 1968, Project SEED exists as
an educational outreach program to encourage
high school students to explore careers in science.
Funding is provided by university, corporate, public,
and private donors. Several SHS students had the
privilege to work and learn under the mentorship of
research experts during the summer of 2010. Con-
gratulations are in order to Yovanie Biggerstaff, Co-
rey Johnson, Ngun HleiTail Nawlthang, Brent Rog-
ers, Hlawn Tlem, and Shelby Turner. Research
projects included a wide range of study from ske-
letal drug concentrations to computer-aided mole-
cular design of anti-cancer agents. A big thank you
also goes to all science teachers for inspiring stu-
dent participation in this summer science program.
Athletics Congratulations to the SHS cheerleaders who
competed at the state fair. Varsity placed 10th of 16
teams, and junior varsity placed 9th of 12 teams.
The Cardinal football
team survived a late threat
from #7 ranked, Class 5A,
Pike Red Devils. With an
18-17 lead and 16 seconds
on the clock, Nick DiPatri-
zio blocked a 34-yard field
goal. Earlier, David Boyer
had the play of the game
with complete hustle on a tipped pass, making it to
the end zone for a touchdown. The Cards are 3-0
and 1-0 in Conference Indiana. (Photo by Indy

Soccer Sensation Andrew Oliver, junior, is on leave from SHS to
be a member of the U-17 U.S. Men’s National Soc-
cer team. He trains and attends high school in
Bradenton, Florida and plays soccer both in the U.S
and internationally. International competitions have
taken him to Argentina, Columbia, Costa Rica,
Germany, Italy, and Mexico. Currently, he and his
teammates are competing in Spain for 2 weeks.
Andrew is a starting forward on the team. The Na-
tional team will play in the U-17 World Cup in June
2011 in Mexico. Andrew attended SHS his fresh-
man year and played on the SHS team with his
brother Wes. The team broke the record for the
most wins in a season that year. What an accom-
plishment for this fine young athlete!
AP Tests Graduates from the Class of 2010 who earned
top scores on the advanced placement government
exam last spring were David Camp, John Cary,
Josh Farrow, Nick Reinhart, and Emily Theis. A
total of 18 students earned passing scores, giving
them a head start in college. Current students are
working diligently to bring a repeat performance.

Classrooms Mr. Williams’ Pre-Algebra class is currently
working on its annual number line project. Stu-
dents make a number line by putting the numbers
“-20 through +20” on individual papers on the wall
in Room 255. Students then spell out each number
in their native language. We are extremely proud
that for the first time there are 5 different languages
on each paper: English, Spanish, Chin, Karen, and
Burmese.
Mrs. Schnepp’s Biology II students await the
emergence of “Scooter,” a monarch butterfly. Dur-
ing a courtyard plant lab, a student found Scooter,
a second instar larva caterpillar about ½ inch long.
The class kept Scooter to observe the monarch’s
life cycle. In the last 2 weeks, Scooter quadrupled
in length and is now in pupa (cocoon) stage. Stu-
dents expect Scooter to emerge as a butterfly soon.
After School Hours A big “Cardinal Character” call-out goes to
sophomore Matt Russell. Matt found a new Black-
Berry phone at school, tracked down the owner by
making a call, then took the phone to Mrs. Brickey
in the main office to be returned. People like Matt
make Southport High School great.
Perry High and SHS are joining forces at the
8/31 volleyball game by wearing pink to support
Race for the Cure. WEAR PINK!
“Team Southport” is a united ef-
fort at SHS to fight breast cancer.
The first of many activities for the
year is a T-shirt sale (red shirts
with “Southport” in pink letters). Led
by Miss Mahin, last year’s T-shirt sales resulted in a
$350 donation to the Komen Foundation. Contact
tmahin@msdpt.k12.in.us to join or order a T-shirt.
Athletics According to Coach Josh Brown, the men’s
soccer team has “extreme talent from top to bot-
tom.” Brandon Iaria, Noah Salas, and Wes Oliver
(starters since 9th grade) are the most winning
players in school history. Oliver is a top scorer in
the state. Chin athletes comprise about
half of all players and more than half of
the varsity team. Van Thang (3-year
starter) is probably the best Chin player
in the area with enough assists to put
him at 3rd for most assists in a single
season in school history. Simon Lian (2-year start-
er) continues to astonish all. Brown states the ma-
jor contribution of Chin players to be, “Effort—they
don’t know when to quit.” Brown continues, “All
players work together to make each other better.”
That explains their current 3-0 season.
Congratulations to the volleyball team for win-
ning the Ben Davis SpikeFest. Our Lady Cards are
currently 9-1.
The Cards brought home a 51-27 victory at
Lucas Oil Stadium against Anderson. Brandon Ia-
ria broke the school record for kicking the longest
field goal in school history at 47 yards and Jimmy
Bayless scored 5 touchdowns. Go Cards!
AP Test Recognition Several students deserve special recognition
for their performance on last year’s advanced
placement tests. Students earning 3’s, 4’s or 5’s
could earn college credit. On the Human Geogra-
phy exam, Ryan Meyers, Daniel Smedema, Jona-
than Goodwin, and Taylor Coffey scored 5’s (the
top score). Other students passing the exam were
Noah Salas, Clayton Leslie, Shivani Parkikshak,
Jeff Sayler, and Brandon Bushong. Watch for more
advanced placement call-outs in the next issue.

Classrooms Congratulations to the GRAD program, enter-
ing its second year at SHS. GRAD students
(Graduate Ready to Achieve Dreams) are cohorts
(groups) that share these common characteristics:
Students are recommended by teachers at end
of freshman year.
Selections are based upon grades and inter-
views for those who choose to apply.
College-based curriculum 1 period per day with
same teacher, grades 10, 11, and 12.
Students research colleges, make college vis-
its, prep for the SAT, refine note-taking skills,
and hone reading and writing skills.
Goal is to gain entry into 4-year university.
Mrs. Jungemann (English) is in second year of
study with students who will graduate in 2012.
Mrs. Worley (Business) teaches the newest co-
hort, students from the Class of 2013.
Mrs. Whitlock’s Technical Theatre class is
helping SHS Color Guard “strike their props” from
last year to re-use materials, saving them lots of
cash. These students are education in action!
SHS Special Topics class is organizing a show
about Shakespeare’s life to travel to classrooms
both in and out of the building to help students un-
derstand his work. Great work, theatre students!
After School Hours The annual front office task to organize a suc-
cessful first day of school was facilitated by gener-
ous volunteers. Top-notch secretaries Mrs. Mader,
Mrs. Waugh, and Mrs. Brickey want to give a call-
out and big thank you to volunteers!
Kristiaan Hulin and Jessica Biggs, SHS seniors.
Grace Branson, JG student volunteer.
PTSA parents and students for stuffing back-to-
school information packets.
Extra-Curricular Kudos to Ryan Myers and Haylie McLinn, SHS
2011 Riley Dance Marathon co-presidents, for lead-
ing a summer retreat with the entire executive
committee. Members have already worked the
Trader’s Point Horse Show, kicking off this year’s
fund-raising for the Ryan White Infectious Disease
Center at Riley Hospital for Children.
Athletics The Cardinal volleyball team is now 5-0 with
two big victories last week. After defeating North
Central on Thursday, they were victorious at the
home invitational on Saturday (6 teams). Congra-
tulations to Coach Johnson and the Lady Cards.
Team captains Treavor Gebhart, Terrance
Redmond, and Brandon Underwood led the attack
against a highly respected Roncalli football team in
the season opener last Friday. The Cards came
out with an early lead but were threatened in final
minutes by a tough Rebel offense. Kenneth Haw-
kins (2012) fought through the heat to sack Roncalli
quarterback B. Soller on a fourth-and-goal play at
the 9-yard line with only seconds remaining to de-
fend the 28-21 Southport triumph. Wow!
Live Red A sea of red is what Car-
dinal teams view when they
look to the stands. Booster
Club officers kicked off the year
with a “Live Red” theme. Over
2,200 students attended last
Friday’s pep session where all fall athletes were
recognized in Rocky Balboa fashion. Pre-game
football tradition included tailgating with music,
games, food, and fun for all. Thank you to all ath-
letes, coaches, and fans that make SHS a strong,
vibrant, athletic, powerhouse in our community.

August 16, 2010 Points of Pride #2* Southport High School
Classrooms Southport greeted students with big changes in
place, the greatest of which moved us from a sche-
dule of 4 to 8 classes per day. To facilitate student
success, the administration introduced several
school-wide procedures to promote responsibility
and keep students in class:
Bell ringer activities every period to support on-
time arrival to classes.
A brilliant system to handle necessary hallway
traffic during class periods (to office, emergen-
cies, student assistants, restrooms, etc.)
Dress code checks during Period 1 with alter-
nate clothing (black sweats) available in dean’s
office for those outside of code. Students may
change clothes and return to class.
Consistency contributed greatly to last week’s
success. Kudos to all stakeholders at Southport!
After School Hours It was standing room only at freshman orienta-
tion. What an intro for the class of 2014!
Allison Hughes spent 6 weeks of her summer
vacation with a Spanish family on the Mediterra-
nean Sea in Valencia, Spain. Her
academic experience was part of
the IU Honors Abroad Program.
She spoke only Spanish, took ad-
vanced classes in Spanish, partici-
pated in choral and theatrical
groups, traveled to Madrid and Salamanca, and
joined celebrations for Spain’s World Cup Victory.
She qualified for the venture with her score on a
college entrance exam, placing her among the top
juniors in Indiana. Congratulations to Allison and
her Spanish teachers at SMS and SHS.
Extra-Curriculars Taylor Peters, Best Buddies President, leads
the local campaign to Spread the Word to End the
Word™ at SHS. This refers to the “R
word (retard/ed).” Her letters to The
Southsider Voice and to Southport’s
Mayor Thoman brought local attention
to a nationwide campaign. On May 5
the mayor’s office issued a proclama-
tion that the “R word” is “hate speech.” He is ask-
ing citizens of Southport to eliminate the word from
their vernacular. Good for Taylor, Best Buddies,
and all who comply with the proclamation!
Athletics Girls’ golf team made Coach Humbles proud
as they finished 3rd at the Shelbyville Invitational!
Sophomore Robert Webb excelled in leading
the Cardinal offense as quarterback in last Friday
night’s jamboree. The Cards will host their season
opener against Roncalli at home on 8-20 at 7:30.
Plan to attend the volleyball invitational on 8-21
at 9 a.m. in the fieldhouse. Good luck, Lady Cards!
School Motto Students were greeted with our school motto
which hangs in the cafeteria in larger than life print
proclaiming, “I am who I choose to be.” Faculty
members brainstormed ideas at summer in-service
and, after much deliberation, finally voted for the
2010-11 winner. Teachers, administrators, and
students will find this mantra empowering as we
embrace the fact that life is a series of choices,
each choice having rewards or consequences.
SHS is dedicated to helping every student under-
stand the truth in this motto and aiding students to
make responsible choices that lead to success.
