Southern Transdanubia has
always been a special experience
for us, Hungarians. Spring arrives
first in this region of the country,
and the autumn sunshine warms
your soul the longest here.
You can sit on a caf terrace
in downtown Pcs even in
November, and we have three
fig crops each year. Acceptance
and hospitality have a tradition
of centuries here. Pcs is a town
decorated with the UNESCOs
peace award. Many nationalities
in the country live together here;
they have preserved their culture
not only in their languages butin their delicious gastronomic
traditions, as well.
SOUTHERN TRANSDANUBIA
A JOURNEY ON
THE SUNNY SIDE OF LIFEBesides the Shokac winter farewell festi-val, the Busho Carnival in Mohcs bear-ing the Intellectual Cultural Heritage title
of UNESCO smaller but similarly authen-tic events like the Stifolder festival, theSteamed Dumplings festival or the Stru-del Festival attract tourists to this regionto see how we live everyday life.
If you wanted to collect the delica-cies of Southern Transdanubia in a box,you would certainly put in the wines ofSzekszrd and Villny first. God has en-dowed this region with treasures inabundance. Our premium local winesare Szekszrd Kadarka and Bulls Blood,
Villny Portugieser and Pcs Cirfandli.Besides, almond, the forest fruits andberries, and the sweet chestnut from theMecsek mountain would also find theirplace in that box, followed by the fish ofthe Danube and the Drava rivers, the gameof Gemenc and Zselic, and the Melons ofOrmnsg. And you must not forget honeyand goats cheese made in the tiny villages.
Most of the welcoming medicinal andthermal baths of the region have beencompletely upgraded recently. Selfness, the latest trend in mental-spiritual-phys-ical harmony appeared in our region first
in Hungary. Nevertheless, a lot of peo-ple visit us seeking traditional ways ofrecreation and preserving their balance;they enjoy the wonderful natural en-
vironment from the saddle of a bicycleor a horse. Be part of this experience, en-

NATIONAL TREASURE
PCS, THE TOWN OF
ZSOLNAY HERITAGE
Pcs thanks its facades decorated with ceramics and char-acterising the cityscape, and its colourful roofs to the Zsol-nay porcelain manufacturing that has been here for over 160
years. The founder of the factory, Vilmos Zsolnay, is a sym-bol of innovation, and received the most significant awardsat a large number of industrial fairs and exhibitions from Vi-
enna to Turin, from Paris to California. Today, star design-ers create jewels from Zsolnay porcelain, and the 150-year oldglove manufacturing in the town still uses the characteristic
glazed (eosin) buttons and ornaments. The Zsolnay oeuvre is shown in its entirety in the
Zsolnay Museum in downtown Pcs. The most renownedpublic sculpture of Pcs is the Zsolnay well decoratedwith bull heads, next to the city hall. Our most beautiful

LEGENDS OF THE TURKISH ERA
PCS AND SZIGETVR
Pcs is a town rich in well-preserved build-ings from the Turkish era. The largest Mus-
lim church in Central Europe, the formerGazi Kasim Pasha Mosque stands in themain square. It is a catholic church today buthas preserved quotations written with fancy
letters from the Koran, a mihrab directed to
Mecca, and aspersoria. The ruins of the oncemagnificent domed bath of Memi Pasha and
the intact djami and minaret of Jakovali Has-
san Pasha can be seen in an adjacent street.A peculiarity of the latter is that its excellent
acoustics are due to the clay jars built in the
walls.
The tomb of Idris Baba, one of the most
appreciated memorials of Turkish architec-ture in Hungary, stands on Rkus Hill.
Szigetvr is the most heroic Hungariantown. Birds recognise it from above not on-ly because of its fortress and the dome of its
spa, but because of the two towers of theentertainment building of Imre Makovecz.Mikls Zrnyi withstanding superior Turkishtroops is a symbol of heroism. On the strong
walls and bastions of the Szigetvr Fortressyou may patrol in the contemporary dressand armament of border garrison soldiersand shoot cannons and rifle together withthe local guides. Besides the Zrnyi Days inSeptember, a large number of cultural fes-tivities are organised here to present thelocal heritage and the folklore values of sur-
rounding settlements. There is an excellent
multi-generation spa at the foot of the for-tress. Mozsg deserves your attention withits award-winning wineries, local producers
of organic food. Magyarlukafa organises the
most authentic folklore festival on VendelDay, and the chance to introduce its artisan
workshops to visitors.
A samurai community wears
the name of Mikls Zrnyi
even today.
The former djami of Pcs is now
a catholic church. Today, a cross
stands on top of the half-moon
preserved on the dome.
