Take Notes

Some Unrelated to this week but NEEDED terms

PLUSIRONY TODAY!

ODD CHARACTER TERMS WE NEED TO CRAM IN

• FOIL = In literature the foil is a character that is the opposite of or contrasts the main character. Function of a foil? To highlight certain qualities or to place emphasis on qualities the main character possesses because the foil lacks them. Like standing an ugly guy next to a hunk. The HUNK looks even better because of the foil.

Odd character terms continued….

• CONFIDANTE= A character that the main character confides in—used by the author to reveal facts and feelings that are otherwise hard to bring out in the story. In other words…lazy character development! Ha

I eat paste.

Dude!! You are in the 10th

grade! Don’t TELL THAT!

One more plot line term

Denouement – Another word for the resolution. It basically means the same thing…just a bigger, prettier word that you need to know because the EOC tends to like bigger, prettier words that mean the same thing.

DENOUEMENT = RESOLUTION

A few more…. • Stage Directions: Directions imbedded into

the text of a play to tell the characters what to do, where to stand, etc… (also plays out these same actions for the reader)

• EXAMPLE: (Sitting in the café)

Joe: I cannot help but think something is wrong with my eyes.

(staring straight at Suzy)

Suzy: They look normal to me, Darling.

(patronizingly)

More concerning character actions….

• Dialogue = Two or more characters talking to one another in a literary work.

• Monologue = A speech by a single character without another character's response.

• Soliloquy= An actor thinking aloud – heard by audience but not other characters.

• Aside= Words spoken by an actor directly to the audience, which are not "heard" by the other characters.

OK---That’s it for the random terms… We will be working with them soon…

keep them on the back burner.

NOW WE MOVE ON TO IRONY!!!!

WE WILL DO IRONY NOTES ON THE BOARD!
