DRAMATURGY

Zac, Lee and Julia

“The individual offers his performance and puts on his show

for the benefit of other people”-Goffman 1971

DRAMATURGY

“A performance is ‘socialised’, moulded, and modified

to fit into the understanding ad expectations of the

society in which it is presented”- Goffman, 1971

SOCIAL LIFE AS A GAME“ They are playing a game. They are playing at not playing a game. If

I show them I see they are, I shall break the rules and they will

punish me. I must play their game, of not seeing I see the game.”- Laing, RD, 1970

Idealisation

Life is a massive stage

We are constantly performing

Act out various versions of the ‘self’ to fit the scene

Conscious of saving face while performing

Dramatise actions so that we make a good first impression

SCRIPTED LIFE

A person who does not believe in their own performance

but acts the way they do in order to satisfy society norms.

CYNICAL

A person who is committed to their performance and

believes in what their ‘self’ is portraying.

Sincere

“One can be convinced that their impression of

reality which they stage is the true reality.”

“ A show for other people, performance to have

others believes that one has the attributes they

appear and show they have.”

DELUSION

SCRIPT

The delusion,

manipulation and

ignorance of interaction

are ultimately assisting

one thing- the game

THE GAME

But the end goal of any

game is to win. In order

to do this you need to be

able to manipulate

characters around you

and change the

performance

MANIPULATION

WHY/WHY NOT

No point in anything

including the social

game.

EXISTENTIAL VIEW

Punishments, rewards,

levels and try to ‘win’.

SIMS- LIFE AS A GAME

Exits, entries and

performance actions.

IMPRESSION OF SELF

Everything is staged,

even intimacy.

Front: Presentation of

yourself to others and

society

STAGES

Back: Where you

prepare for presentation,

in solitude.

2 or more people reliant on outcome of performance and script

Cooperation among members of a team define the script

Without teamwork meaning of interaction would be lost

Audience also plays a role in the development of a

performance

TEAMS

The “audience”

consists of people

surrounding the

interaction, a silent

character, basically any

witness to the

performance and

interaction

AUDIENCE

Their presence

influences the

characters and script, as

audience is one of the

many factors that

contribute to

dramaturgy.

Symbolic

interactionism

FRAMES

Frame of a situation

produces the event

itself.
