21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The story is told of two elderly priests, both nearing the end of their days, who made a compact. Whichever of them died first, he would return and tell the other what life beyond the grave was like. Eventually Fr. Joe died and was buried. Some months later Fr. Bill was sitting in his room. It was Saturday night; he was busy preparing his homily – or was it watching football? In any event, he suddenly became aware of a presence: Fr. Joe was standing there before him. “Joe,” he gasped “it’s you. Tell me, what it is like in heaven?” “Well,” replied Joe “you’d be surprised who’s there.” There was a pause: “And you’d be surprised who isn’t,” and with that he was gone.
It was hardly the answer Bill had expected. Much the same might be said of the man who questioned Jesus in today’s gospel. He didn’t get the answer he expected. Mind you, his question could hardly have come at a more inappropriate moment. Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem, where suffering and death await him, while all the questioner id concerned about is the speculative issue of how many people will be saved: “Will there be only a few?” he enquires, rather pessimistically.
Jesus’ reply must have brought him down to earth. He says in effect: never mind the numbers game, your task is to work hard – literally, to struggle – so that you’ll be able “to enter by the narrow door” that leads to salvation. You may be a Jew, you may even be Roman Catholic, members of God’s people, but that doesn’t mean you can slip through with the crowd. It’s not enough that you belong to the “in” group. There’s no way through the narrow door without personal struggle.
Then Jesus puts it another way. This time he speaks not of “a narrow door” but of a closed door and God himself is pictured as the owner of the house. Ehen the householder has locked up for the night – a gentle hint that earthly life does not last for ever – it will be no use trying to get in by offering excuses, we ate and drank with you, we heard you preaching in the streets. The householder will not be impressed; he will reply: “I don’t know you”. Jesus goes on to speak of the anguish they will suffer, as Jews, if the great Jewish patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and the prophets, are all there at the messianic banquet, while they themselves are locked out. It would be more galling still, if they were to see among the insiders, people from the four corners of the globe. That would mean that some of God’s own people had been replaced at the banqueting table by non-Jews, by Gentiles. Those always regarded as
first would now be last, and visa versa.
It needs little imagination to translate the message of today’s gospel into a message for ourselves. We have been blessed in the most extraordinary way, even more than the Jewish people of old. We have been baptized, we have been adopted as the children of God, we are members of the Church, God’s chosen people, we have the sacraments to meet our needs at every juncture of life, we have the scriptures to bring us God’s Good News, we have the support of our fellow-believers. Here at Mass we cannot forget that we even eat and drink at the Lord’s Table. Such blessings ought to fill us with gratitude. The one they must not do is lead us to presumption. If we reach heaven it will not be simply because we are Catholics, or even because we receive the lord himself in the Eucharist. We shall reach heaven because of the gracious goodness of God on the one hand and our own humble efforts on the other.
On that day we may discover that the response Fr. Bill received from his friend had more than a grain of truth in it. Looking round the banqueting table of heaven, we may be surprised – by those who are there, and, perhaps, by those who are not. However, as we have been reminded today, our task is not to waste time on pointless speculation. What matters is that, avoiding complacency, we strive to live out our faith in our daily lives while putting all our trust in our God whose love is strong and whose faithfulness endures for ever. Blessings Always, Fr. Bob Pastor

FOOD PANTRY THANK YOUS
We have the best volunteers!
Due to the area power outage last week food pantry distribution was held without electricity! That’s right; no lights or AC. Volunteers and clients creatively used cell phones and flash lights to help each other throughout the evening. We are so grateful for everyone’s patience and creativity as 180 households receive food that night. THANK YOU!!!
As we approach the fall and winter months, the number of families needing our food assistance increases for many reasons. Among them are higher energy bills, back to school costs, and seasonal jobs coming to an end, leaving less income for food. We are extremely grateful that your support makes this community outreach possible, even as your own families experience the need to “tighten your belts”. Be assured that the monthly supplemental food assistance we provide is greatly needed and appreciated. THANK YOU!
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
***Due to construction our meeting space and entrance will be changed. Please contact Kendall or the Rectory for more details if you plan on attending***
MONTHLY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUPPORT GROUP
If you or someone close to you is experiencing domestic violence this group may be very helpful.
The objective of the group is to provide all a chance to talk in confidence about domestic violence and share questions, concerns and experiences with others who are facing - or who have faced - similar situations. Please contact Kendall Grant for more information.
4 MILLION VOICES: GIVING HOPE TO SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
I will never forget the first time I answered a phone call on behalf of the National Domestic Violence Hotline. I was covering the lines so that our staff could enjoy our annual holiday party. The call was from a microbiologist who was in an abusive relationship. She kept saying, “How did I get here? I am a smart woman. How could I be so stupid?” I remember wishing I could erase the blame, pain and shame she was feeling. I also remember thinking, “What can I say to give her hope? What can I say to help her see that she deserves better?”
Our trained advocates—those who dedicate their time to answering the calls, chats and texts we receive from people across the country—respond to hundreds of individuals in need each day. From a concerned parent or sister calling on behalf of a loved one, to a teenager asking whether it’s normal for his partner to monitor his phone constantly, each situation is different from the next.
In June, The Hotline answered its four millionth contact, which is one of four million conversations that our advocates have had with victims and survivors of domestic violence in need over the last 20 years. From my perspective, that number represents a large population of people hurting, and it reinforces that there is still (continued on next page)

work to be done. On the other hand, that number also represents the courage of so many people seeking help and resources.
Since answering our first call in 1996, The Hotline has worked diligently to become the go-to resource for anyone affected by domestic violence to find help and understanding. With the evolution of technology, we have become more than just a hotline. In 2011, loveisrespect, our project for youth and young adults, launched the nation’s first 24-hour text-for-help service with the support of Mary Kay Inc. In 2013, The Hotline partnered with Verizon to create a live chat service, giving people another safe, private way to connect with an advocate. Through these additional services, we have been able to reach thousands of people, serving 326,422 in 2015 alone.
Domestic violence is a crime that does not discriminate. It does not see gender, race, age, sexual orientation, ethnicity or income level. It occurs in every community and can take a variety of forms, and the wounds are not always visible.
But there is hope.
Whether it’s a safety plan, the number to a local shelter or the first time a survivor hears “I believe you,” The Hotline is here to help shift power back to those affected by relationship abuse—four million times and counting.
If you or someone you know if being abused, please reach out to The Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or by visiting www.thehotline.org
This article was edited for length and can be found in full, including audio from advocates at The Hotline at www.huffingtonpost.com.
In an emergency, dial 911, call the National Domestic Violence 24-Hour Hotline at 800-799-7233 or the local 24 hour hotline for Pillars, found in the purple box to the left on the previous page. You are not alone.

Calling all Cooks and Bakers! If you have a “signature” recipe that everybody wants, we need your help...
In an effort to raise funds for the St. Cletus conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, we are publishing a community cookbook. The proceeds will enable the Society to continue assisting those in our area that are struggling financially, regardless of race or religion.
To avoid having several versions of the same item, we are asking you to submit two or three recipes. We will select one or more to be included in our cookbook.
Please complete the form on page 8. Print carefully and don’t forget to add your contact information in case we have any questions. Your name will be printed with each of your recipes. If your recipe has a “history”, tell us about it! We would like to include that in the cookbook too!
You can find more forms and drop off your completed forms in the narthex by the food pantry bins.
Please submit your recipes as soon as possible! We would like to have the cookbook completed in time to sell for the holidays.
The deadline to submit recipes is September 27th. The more recipes we collect the better. If you have a friend or relative that has a good recipe, ask them if they would like to contribute it to our cookbook.
You can also submit your recipes via our website: http://cookbook.stcletusparish.com.
Questions? svdpcookbook@aol.com
Thank you!

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD
The new year of ministry will begin taking shape with an Advisory Board meeting on Wednesday, August 17th from 7-8 pm in the Youth Ministry office. Enter through the main office of the school building, the apple door which is near Stone Ave. This gathering is open to all teens entering 9th-12th grades and any adult parishioners who are interested in planning the upcoming year of service, prayer, and social activities! Come ready to share your ideas or offer your skills of interest to making the new year a great one!
ENCOUNTER REGISTRATION BEGINS
Although summer is full swing, there is much to look forward to in the fall! As plans take shape for the upcoming school year, consider joining Encounter. In the midst of busy schedules and heavy workloads, it can be even more important to take time to stop and reflect about God’s role in your life and to share these experiences with others. Encounter small groups will meet monthly to take some time to reconnect with other teens from St. Cletus and to take a look at how life looks through the eyes of faith. Small groups will also have opportunities to join up monthly in prayer or service. Register today with the forms on the website!
TEEN MUSIC MINISTRY
Do you love to sing? Do you play a musical instrument? Consider joining the music ministry with other teens! The first teen music ministry gathering will be Sunday, August 21st from 4-5:30 in the music room. Pizza will be served! For more information contact Larry LaLonde at llalonde@stcletusparish.com.
ADULTS NEEDED: ENCOUNTER GROUPS
Are you interested in helping youth grow spiritually? Do you enjoy working with teens? I am looking for enthusiastic, dedicated, and faith-filled parishioners who are flexible and willing to give of their time and talent to minister to our teens in faith-sharing groups. Called Encounter, these groups will allow teens and adults to come together to encounter Christ by looking at their lives through the lens of faith. As a leader, you will share your home (or partner with someone who shares theirs) and share your faith eight times per year with a small group of teens. You will be invited to help at a few large group sessions as well. A few facilitator meetings are held during the year to give you the support and guidance necessary to enjoy the many rewards of this ministry. This responsibility should be shared, and session outlines and curricula would be supplied. If you are considering making this commitment, please pray over it. We need you!
CHURCH LEAGUE COACHES NEEDED
It’s never too early to start thinking about Church League Basketball ! The boys’ season begins in November and ends in February, and the girls’ season begins in March and ends in May. Though this may
seem far out, we need to make sure we have the coaches we need to open our teams up for registration. Each team needs two coaches who establish full compliance with Protecting God’s Children. If you are interested in helping with this fun ministry, contact Elizabeth.

The next Coffee and Conversation is scheduled for Saturday, October 29th, presented by Sister Mary Jo Curtsinger, CSJ: Meeting the Indigenous Catholics of Chiapas Through the Eyes of Their Pastors.

PRAYER VIGIL TO END VIOLENCE
Violence is all around us in many different forms: in our world, in our country, in our communities, and in our homes. There is something that each of us can do to help: pray. Pray to end gun violence, domestic violence, economic violence, environmental violence.
Please join with parishioners of both Old St. Pat’s and Old St. Mary’s in an Anti-Violence Vigil on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Old St. Patrick’s Church 700 W. Adams (at Des Plaines).
