Unsafe State Housing, Blocked Access over Crowded Conditions

The majority of New Zealanders report being in good health.

High smoking rates persist in Māori adults and in adults living in the most deprived areas.

Hazardous drinking rates and smoking rates are highest in young people.

Adults and children living in the most deprived areas have higher rates of all health risks including smoking, hazardous drinking and obesity.

Maori Birth Rate

• Is on the increase• Younger age at conception 17-25yrs• Have more pregnancies in child bearing years• Have higher rates of smoking in pregnancy

Live in a household where others smoke

Most Maori Women know they are Pregnant by 7wks

• 70% have their pregnancy confirmed at a GP practice

• Often they are informed to give up smoking, but no assistance is offered

• If they are not supported to give up smoking, within 2 wks of pregnancy confirmation or in the first trimester they continue to smoke

• Most attempt to go COLD TURKEY without support and fail.

How can we support Maori pregnant Women to STOP SMOKING

• Promote smoke-free pregnancy to all women & Maori men of child-bearing age• Confirming physician to intervene with NRT and Smoke-free referral• Target the whole whanau
