Somerville, as president of ABS,will work in the bureau’s corporateheadquarters in New York City. Heis responsible for the bureau’stechnical, operational and ad-ministrative activities related toclassification and certification.
Somerville began his career withTexaco, then worked for NewportNews Shipbuilding and Drydock. In1979, he started working for ABS asa surveyor in the bureau’s Philadel-phia office. He later served as asurveyor in the Chicago andSturgeon Bay offices, followed byan assignment in the New Yorkheadquarters. He subsequently heldassignments in Caracas, Venezuela;Lisbon, Portugal; Taipei, Taiwan;Busan, Korea; and London.
When ABS was reorganized in late1990, Somerville became presidentof one of the three new divisions,ABS Europe.
A native of Houlton, Maine,Somerville graduated from theMaine Maritime Academy in 1965with a degree of bachelor of sciencein marine engineering. In 1987, hecompleted the Harvard BusinessSchool program for managementdevelopment.
Somerville is a member of theSociety of Naval Architects andMarine Engineers and the AmericanWelding Society.ABS Europe President
