Resistance to Slavery

• Ex’s of Slave resistance– Nat Turner (preacher) who lead 70 slaves to

rebels vs slave owners.– Cinque (African) from Sierra Leon. Escaped

on slave ship and led revolt on Slave Ship. (Won Freedom & allowed to return home)

– Harriet Tubman (Escaped slavery and led underground RxR to the North)

Underground RxR

• Helped slaves who escaped from slavery

• Estimated that 100s to 1000s of people involved

• Abolitionist who were AA and white (Houses, canals, music (signals)

Ideas/strategies to address Slave Issue in U.S.

• Colonization

-going back to homeland (Africa) because U.S. (Slave owners) will never allow for equal society

Abolitionist

-some abolitionist supported colonization

-easier for slavery problem to go away

-Slave no longer Free in North if you escaped to South

• Southern Plantation Owner had power in South

• Why?– Became politicians, Majority of population

couldn’t vote because they were slaves– Poor whites couldn’t vote (Discrimination)First 70 yrs of U.S.

-50 yrs were served by Slave owning Presidents (T.J., Washington, Van Buren,etc)

Justifications for Slavery by slave owners

• Civilized slaves from Africa

• Slave Owner argued (Slave would have a better life in U.S.)

Religion in Slavery

Slave Owners-Tried to justify slavery in U.S.-If Obey slave master, obey Godly master

Slaves-interpreted religion differently-God does not approve of slavery
