SpecialistKnowledge forTeaching Maths(SKTM) PrimaryProgramme forearly careerteachersThis project is designed to supportearly career primary teachers indeveloping specialist knowledge forteaching mathematics, thus enablingthem to understand, teach andsupport pupils in maths in theclassroom.Maths Hubs work with a range ofpartners to ensure there is effectiveprofessional development of teachersof maths in schools so that they havethe specialist knowledge required tosupport the learning of maths. Thisproject is offered to impact ondeveloping the subject knowledge andpedagogical knowledge forexperienced teaching.

Tuesday 12th January 2021 - 3.30-5.30pm,ZoomTuesday 2nd February 2021- 3.30-5.30pm,ZoomSessions 3, 4 and 5 will take place in Spring 2 and Summer 1, dates tbcSessions will take place remotely via Zoom,or in person, location tbc

Participants and their schools will:Enhance their maths subjectknowledge with an emphasis onthe key structures in eachmathematical area coveredAdd further depth to understanding ofthe key elements that form numbersense, forms of addition andsubtraction, forms of multiplicationand division, and forms of fractions,including precise language, structuresand representationsReview their practice as a result of thesessions and make specific adaptationsto impact on pupil outcomes.

What is involved?

The programme is based on four core primarymodules:•            Number sense•            Additive reasoning•            Multiplicative reasoning •            FractionsAn additional module offers an introductionwhich sets the scene for the current mathsteaching landscape.

This programme is designed for early career teachers who would like tofurther develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths. 

The SKTM – Primary programme is fully funded by the Maths HubsProgramme so is free to participating schools.

Covid-19 RecoveryThe school year 2020/21 will be substantiallyaffected by the impact of the coronavirusoutbreak. The knock-on effects on school life andteachers’ working lives can’t be predicted with anycertainty. So, all Maths Hubs work will be flexibleand adapt to changing realities. There’s likely tobe more live online collaboration, often includinguse of video, for example.In addition, Work Group content will be adjustedto address schools’ recovery from coronavirus-related disruption alongside work on the centralmaths subject matter of each project.
