What are the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions?

A European Union funded programme for structuring researcher

training, mobility and career development

Guiding principles:

Who, what and where?

• Who: All levels of research experience from PhD researcher upwards – there are actions for different levels of experience.

• What: All areas of research are supported: bottom-up approach

• Where: Anywhere: any research performing organisation, public or private worldwide - there are actions for European and international mobility.

Innovative Training Networks

ITNearly-stage researchers(< 4 years)

Doctoral and initial training: European Training Networks, European Industrial Doctorates, European Joint Doctorates

Individual Fellowships

IFexperiencedresearchers(> 4 years)

Support for experienced researchers to undertake international and inter-sector mobility, incl. career restart and reintegration

Research and Innovation Staff Exchange

RISE International and inter-sector cooperation through the exchange of staff

Co-funding of programmes

COFUND Co-funding of regional, national and international programmes: - doctoral programmes (ESR)- fellowship programmes (ER)

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions

How?

Depends on experience and type of mobility

Experience: Support for 2 categories of researchers:

Early Stage Researcher: Less than 4 years of research experience*, and without a doctoral degree ("pre-doc")

Experienced Researcher: In possession of a doctoral degree or at least 4 years of res. experience* ("post-doc")

*counted from the time when is entitled to embark on a doctoral degree

Experienced researcher / Post-doc level:

Apply for your own fellowship:

1. through IF

and/or

2. through COFUND

Post-doc fellowships(Individual Fellowships or COFUND)

▪ Apply in conjunction with a hostinginstitution in EU or AC that will managethe grant

▪ Only for Experienced Researchers

In possession of a doctoral degree, or have 4 years of full-time research experience at the time of the call deadline

For fellows from Europe going to Third countries (12-24 months) and returning (12 months)

For fellows coming to or moving within Europe (12-24 months)

Going to Europe: European Fellowships

▪ Held in the EU or associated countries

▪ Open to researchers coming to Europe

▪ European Fellowships can also include a secondmentperiod of up to 3 or 6 months in another organisation inEurope, where this would boost the impact of thefellowship.

Going to Malaysia: Global Fellowships

▪ Fund secondments outside Europe for researchers based inthe EU or associated countries.

▪ Open to researchers working in Europe moving to rest ofthe world.

▪ Research institution in Malaysia can host a MSCA IFgrantee from Europe.

More than just a research project; a career development fellowship

1. Scientific excellence

•Training through research (individual project)

2. Interdisciplinary skills

•Additional scientific skills (new techniques, instruments etc.)

•Transferable skills (e.g. communication, IPR,entrepreneurship etc.)

3. Inter-sectoral mobility

Secondments possible to and from the non-academic sector: 3– 6 months

• Can spend up to 6 months (in total) working inanother organisation (ideally in another sector) inEurope.

• Opportunity to link with industry, NGO, publicsector, national archive etc.

4. Networking

Strengthening networking capabilities both for researchers and for organisations involved

▪ MSCA COFUND projects offer 'post-doc' positions similar to the IF

▪ Employment contracts with full social security

▪ Minimum monthly rate which hosting organisations should pay their COFUND fellows:

▪ Doctoral-level programme run by an international network of organisations, develops both research and transferable skills

▪ Fellowships of 3-36 months that include time in the non-academic sector

▪ Possible industrial doctorate (joint supervision with business) or a joint doctorate

▪ Bottom up approach – no predefined scientific priorities
