GRAND THEATRE campsBY MICHELE BIRD
Grand Theatre Center for the Arts is not just home to galleries, plays, and performances. Located in downtown Tracy, a variety of summer camps and workshops are held each year at the venue. With kick-off dates scattered throughout June, July, and August, there are countless themes involving visual arts, music, drama, and more that campers can choose from. For those aspiring to make it big in Hollywood one day, there is a main stage camp being offered starting July 8 to help budding actors expand their skills in auditioning, makeup, and performance techniques. Participants ages 9 - 18 will be able to choose from one of four concentrations during the three-week long camp including musical theatre, comedy and tragedy, directing, and behind-the-scenes. A limited number of spaces will be available for both the directing and behind-the-scenes concentrations, so signing up early will help guarantee your child’s spot! In June, one-week theme camps were offered for actors hoping to learn more about pantomime and masks, puppets, and playmakers. Visually artistic campers can also choose from sessions focused on painting, drawing, and writing. A three-day parent and me drawing workshop will begin on August 20. The workshop is a great bonding experience for families, especially for those who have creativity flowing through their veins. Don’t miss out on the mathematics of music, a free workshop taking place on August 3, which will focus on how classical and western music connects to math. This event is for ages 5 – 18 and will also discuss history dating back to the Greeks and the science of acoustics. Make your child’s summer magical and let them get in touch with their inner artist by signing up for a workshop or camp this season! For additional information on all of the upcoming camps, workshops, and registration prices, visit atthegrand.org.

ZoofariBY MICHELE BIRD
Camps are a quintessential activity for every summer season. Days are filled with friends, learning experiences, and of course, fun. There are endless amounts of themed camps offered today. Science, sports, theatre, and dance are just a handful of options out there. No matter what hobby or interest your child has, there is most likely a camp that will cater to it. Lodi’s Micke Grove Zoo is hosting a Zoofari Summer Camp this year featuring games, arts and crafts, live animal encounters, and more! The first two sessions kicked off on June 17 – 21 and June 24 – 28. The final two sessions will take place on July 8 – 12 and July 15 – 19. Zoofari has a variety of themes campers can choose from including solving a mystery as a zoo detective to learning what it is like to be a zoo keeper. This camp is perfect for the nature enthusiasts and animal lovers in your life because all of the themes are based around animals. Campers will get to discover wild habitats, how animals adapt to their
environments, and the unique features each animal has. For the youngsters, they will explore what it is like to move in the zoo by swinging like monkeys and soaring like eagles. All children enrolled in grades pre-k to 5th (as of the 2013 – 2014 school year) can register for
Zoofari. The price for Micke Grove Zoo members is $85 and non-members is $95. Don’t miss out on a summer of fun; guarantee a spot at Zoofari by registering online now! All campers will receive a free shirt and daily snack.

SALIDA SURGERY CENTERBY MICHELE BIRD
Salida Surgery Center hopes to eliminate those fears by treating all patients and families with respect as individuals, along with exceptional patient care. Founded in 2004, Salida Surgery Center specializes in dentistry for children and patients with special needs. Surgery services consist of a complete oral and dental rehabilitation on every patient, including teeth cleaning and polishing. Usually one visit is all it takes and the work is complete. General anesthesia is used, instead of the papoose board, to help patients have a more relaxing experience. Education is a big part of Salida Surgery Center’s goal and every patient is given an information packet on proper brushing techniques to learn the best oral hygiene tips and snacks to eat. The office is Disney themed with Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Monsters Inc., and princesses. The bilingual staff, including the front office staff, dental assistants, nurses,
and doctors, are welcoming to all patients. Salida Surgery Center is well-known for giving back to the community as they perform free dental screenings for children enrolled at local Head Start schools and including those in the rural areas of Stanislaus County. Students who participate in the screening are given a treatment plan, a bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, flosser and stickers. The goal is to help educate students and families on oral health. Salida Surgery Center ensures their patients know what to expect during their visit and hope children have less fear of the dentist by the time they leave. Hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Appointment times vary.

PARENTS BY CHOICEBY PARENTS BY CHOICE
Inspired out of a deep conviction that foster children deserve great homes, Executive Director and Founder, Tony Yadon, established Parents by Choice in 2006.
Since then, Parents by Choice has faithfully served San Joaquin, Solano, and Stanislaus counties; becoming one of the premier foster care agencies in the central valley. At the onset, Parents by Choice made a commitment to emphasize quality over quantity, choosing to focus on the care of the child instead of the amount of children placed by an agency. To say the least, this mindset has not hindered their growth. In May 2013, Parents by Choice placed 110 children with loving foster families! As the agency grew, so did the desire to provide more opportunities for foster youth and foster parents to flourish. Parents by Choice organizes annual events to
strengthen bonds and for Staff to connect with the children and foster parents in a casual way. Some events include paintball camp, spa day, and a Christmas party. Parents by Choice focuses on building long term relationships with the children well after they have exited the foster care system. The agency provides support for foster parents, offering monthly meetings and training to equip them to confidently care for their foster children. Parents by Choice has a strong commitment to treat families well and ensuring foster parents feel like members of the team, which are vital assets of this ever-growing agency. Part of Parents by Choice’s mission is to give back to the communities in which they serve. One way they give back is through a free six week parenting class called Triple P-Positive Parenting Program. This course is open to anyone who wants to improve their parenting skills and includes discussion topics such as how to control emotional levels at home and boosting confidence in parenting abilities. Dinner and childcare are typically available at the
weekly sessions. Parents by Choice is committed to integrity and growth as an agency. Since 2010, the agency has been a member of the California Alliance of Child and Family Services. This is a voluntary accreditation above and beyond what is required of the state and federal regulations. Setting the pace is important to Parents by Choice, as they were the first California agency to use Kaleidacare software as a way to be more effective, organized, and secure when managing cases. All of this, combined with a well-trained and competent staff, makes Parents by Choice your best choice for foster care parenting. For information on qualifications to become a foster parent, or to sign up for the Positive Parenting Program, please visit parentsbychoice.net.

Gearing UP for School BY MICHELE BIRD
BACK TO SCHOOL | GEAR UP
Homework and waking up early are always the last things on anyone’s mind when the summer season rolls around. As August quickly approaches, it’s time to hit the books and prepare to head back to school. Getting geared up, with everything from supplies to a fresh hairdo, always helps set the tone for a successful school year. It's a good idea to pick up any needed supplies prior to the first day of class to avoid a crazy rush and long lines! Some schoolhouse essentials are writing utensils, a three-ring binder, folders,
college-ruled paper, and highlighters. Depending on which class you are enrolled in is where the supply list will start to vary. A colorful backpack or trendy tote bag are excellent options to carry all your school necessities. Anyone interested in art and DIY can also show off their creative side by adding unique designs to their bags. Felt markers, puffy paint, patches, and pins are just a handful of items that can be used to transform a basic bag to signature you. Once you are set with your gear, start saying goodbye to late nights
and hello to early alarm clocks. It can be tough getting back into a consistent sleeping schedule, especially after months of being able to sleep in and just relax all day. A good approach to establish a sleep schedule is to start going to bed early at least a week prior to school beginning. This will help you rise earlier in the morning and be prepared for the busy semester or quarter that is ahead. Perhaps one
thing everyone either loves ordreads is the annual school picture; you know, the one that forever lives in the yearbook. School pictures can be hit or miss, but there are a few tips that can ensure an A+ photograph. First, plan out an outfit that you love; perhaps it is your favorite jersey or lucky necklace. Choose something that showcases your style and that you feel comfortable in. If you feel great, then you know the photo will turn out just as good. Hair is another detail that can stand out in school pictures. Glimpsing back at past decades, it is usually easy to spot the hairdo trends of the day. A new hairstyle is always fun to play around with and is another way to flaunt your originality. Lastly, make sure to say cheese and smile big for the camera! It is a guarantee that these are the photos that your family, friends, and you will look back at for years to come. Most of all, remember to have fun and enjoy all the exciting things school has to offer. Whether you are trying out for the football team or signing up for a club, take advantage of all the great opportunities. Who knows, you might end up finding the perfect hobby for next summer!

SCHOOL CLOTHINGBY MICHELE BIRD
To get more bang for your buck, there are a few tips that can make that happen. One sure way to save cash is to shop during holiday sales. There are almost always sales and discounts at your favorite department stores to celebrate everything from Memorial Day to Fourth of July and Labor Day. Keep an eye out for these promotions by checking online and in the newspaper for all the hottest steals that will help keep your wallet as full as it can be. Holidays are not the only time to take advantage of discount deals. Outlet malls are always offering affordable prices on must-have clothing for the coming season. Tracy Outlets is home to avariety of name brands including Levi’s, Famous Footwear, and Carter’s, to name a few. Outlets offer customers a chance to get bargain prices on the latest trends in fashion, shoes, and accessories. Not to mention, the new school season is a great time to clear out the closet of clothing your kids have outgrown, or no longer wear, to help make room for a new wardrobe. Shopping at consignment and thrift stores is one way to achieve great back-to-school savings deals. There are low prices on popular name brands and the opportunity to sell back old clothing that is piling up in your closet. Using the money you make from selling clothing is a great way to help fund a fresh wardrobe. Some local consignment store options include My Best Friend’s Closet in Tracy and Crossroads Trading Co. in Stockton. There are also local charities such as Goodwill where you can pick up clothing on a dime and
help donate to a good cause. Another avenue to consider is garage and yard sales. What’s great about thrifting and garage sales is that you can find almost anything there. From unique jewelry to vintage purses, there is always an eclectic amount of treasure waiting to be purchased. Garage sales happen pretty frequently, especially during the spring and summer months due to the warm weather. Spot garage sales by looking out for advertisements posted in the local newspaper, online, or as you drive by neighborhoods. Or, if you’re not in the mood to hit the pavement, check out Facebook, Craigslist, and Freecycle websites for more ways to save on used duds. You could also conduct your own yard sale and make a few bucks at the end of the day, which is always helpful to any shopper’s budget. Finally, shopping does not necessarily need to be the option when searching for an updated wardrobe. Repurposing clothing is a great project for kids and parents to team up on, and it's a lot of fun too. Take a few patches to accessorize jeans, or make a vest by removing the sleeves on an old jacket. The options are endless since creativity is what DIY is all about. Overall, make a plan of action and try to stick to it; whether it’s looking for the next best sale or creating a new piece of clothing. Your budget will thank you in the end and your kids are sure to kick off a successful school year.
SPOTLIGHT | FOR THE PARENTS
In tough economic times, being budget-conscious at every shopping trip is essential. Returning to school can easily become costly with the growing list of clothing, supplies, shoes, and backpacks.

GETAWAY | SANTA YNEZ
Parents and their children can enjoy an amazing amount of unusual animal-related and family-
friendly activities when visiting this gorgeous vacation destination around five driving hours
from our area. Just visiting Solvang, Danish capital of the US, should enthrall most children
with the colorful architecture and close-up views of windmills. You can introduce your kids to
the feel of traveling to Europe without spending thousands of dollars on airfare. Other valley
towns have a lot to offer families as well. Smaller enclaves like Santa Ynez, Ballard, and Buellton
are within minutes of each other and should not be missed as you will soon read. Our suggested
stay: at least five days!
Santa YnezValley
Abundant Family Fun
WHAT TO DO AND SEE FOR ACTIVE FAMILIES:
SOLVANG: If you’re in town for a weekend or holiday, be sure to jump on the Solvang Trolley drawn by a stately draft horse for a village tour. Are your kids allowed pastries and candy? If so, delectable Danish delicacies are found throughout town. Be sure to try famous butter cookies at one of five bakeries like Olsen’s (olsensdanishvillagebakery.com). And don’t miss trying a scrumptious
Dane delicacy, Arne’s Aebleskiver at the popular Solvang Restaurant (solvangrestaurant.com). Touring 1804’s Mission Santa Ines, referred to as the “Hidden Gem of the Missions” is a wonderful discovery into yesteryear at this 19th of the 21 California Missions. (missionsantaines.org). A visit to the Elverhoj Museum will give the family a visual idea of a nicely furnished Denmark home (elverhoj.org). The Hans Christian Anderson Museum in the Book Loft building, although small, is a cultural treat for any child or adult familiar with this famous Danish fairy

tale author (bookloftsolvang.com). This picturesque valley, often part of adventure bike tours and racing events, can be a wonderful bike rental outing with many optional trek choices that can be handled comfortably by most ages (drjsbikeshop.com). Kids from three to 93 will love a visit to the Quicksilver Miniature Horse Ranch. These cuties are about large Great Dane height, much fun to watch as they frolic in their pastures, can be purchased as pets but not recommended for riding (qsminis.com). Horseback riding anyone?
Your family will be in heaven at the famed Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort featuring scenic trail rides at this iconic working dude ranch. (alisal.com). Want the ultimate Denmark experience in the U.S. where colorful costumes, dancing and fun-filled events are happening? Try visiting the third weekend in September for the authentic Danish Days. Looking for a children’s playground, tennis courts or picnic areas? Look no further than nearby Hans Christian Anderson Park. We know most families don’t take their

kids along for a wine tasting experience, but we have to mention one tasting room that encourages folks to bring their offspring and dogs, too. Carivintas Winery features quality wines, supports non-profit animal rescue programs and offers the most child- and dog-friendly tasting room we’ve ever visited. (Read: dog treats and beds, children’s play area with games) (www.carivintas.com). Since the Valley’s quality varietals are considered by many as distinctive and premier rivals to the better known Napa and Sonoma wines, here is an opportunity to do so within a family friendly environment.
SANTA YNEZ:Our most pleasant surprise on our most recent visit was seeing the incredible Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society Museum and Carriage House, housing the largest display of wagons and stage coaches west of the Rockies. If curator John Crockett (a distant relative of Davy Crockett) is on site, ask if he might be available for a brief tour (santaynezmuseum.org). While in Santa Ynez, we suggest families take a short trip up to the Cachuma Lake Recreation Area where great hiking, fishing, boat nature tours, scenic kayaking, and camping await. The boat tours provide a unique opportunity for viewing elegant soaring bald eagles and osprey, a thrilling visual experience (cachuma.com).
GETAWAY | SANTA YNEZ
BALLARD: We loved our visit to the Mediterranean miniature donkey ranch, which allows hands on touching of the adorable mini-donkeys, goats, and other animals. These minis are also available for sale and can be ridden by children (seeinspotsfarm.com).
BUELLTON: A visit to OstrichLand USA can be a fun intro to both emus and ostriches—the world’s largest bird species. A short walk to the falls, at nearby Nojoqui Falls County Park, is a wonderfully scenic woodsy hike. Just don’t expect a roaring water cascade (ostrichlandusa.com), (countyofsb.org/parks/parks02.aspx?id=8068).
Special note: most attractions mentioned above are either free, have a nominal admission, or ask for an optional donation.
WHERE TO STAY AND DINE:
SOLVANG: The Inn at Petersen Village, one of the highest-rated hotels downtown, is a wonderful family lodging choice; and the complimentary breakfasts, attractive décor, friendly staff, and our Café Provence dinner made our recent stay delightful (peterseninn.com). Longing for a true Danish smorgasbord dinner? Try Bit O’ Denmark, Solvang’s oldest restaurant since 1963 (bitodenmark.com).
SANTA YNEZ: Our personal favorite lodging choice in the Valley is the four-diamond Santa Ynez Inn. And although we don’t recommend it for small or unruly children, we think it deserves consideration for those parents with well-disciplined, mature-for-their-age kids. This Queen Anne Victorian offers guests 20 marvelously furnished guest rooms, luxury amenities, fireplaces, and some with decadent steam room showers. Complimentary gourmet breakfasts and evening hors d’ oeuvres with wine tasting in their stunning great room were divine (santaynezinn.com).
BUELLTON: Close to Highway 101, so lodging rates seem lower, and the historic Pea Soup Andersen’s Inn might be worth a try. Their restaurant has been going strong since 1924 (peasoupandersens.com). The Hitching Post restaurant is a perfect choice for scrumptious oak broiled steaks and hamburgers (hitchingpost2.com).
