Similes and Metaphors.

L.O: To be able to understand what a simile and a metaphor is and the

difference between the two.

You will be doing a piece of imaginative writing soon and I have

realise that a lot of you may have forgotten some of the things you

need to put in to your descriptions.

Similes and metaphors are types of figurative language.

Building Blocks to Effective Description

Although they do make your description different

levels, we are learning them together as people do get confused between the difference of the two.

Simile: A simile is a figurative language technique where a comparison

is made using like or as.

A simile is a figure of speech that makes a comparison showing similarities

between two different things

Remember to keep in context

Metaphor: A poetic comparison that does not use

the words like or as. .

Life is like a rollercoaster

Life is a rollercoaster

Which is the simile and which is the metaphor? Can you explain why?

Both similes and metaphors are similar

• Both are literacy devices used to create vivid imagery in writing

• Both are used to make comparisons

• Both often connect two items which might not always have a connection What do you think life is a rollercoaster means?

Write an explanation in your books

Examples of similes:

Examples of metaphors

This metaphor compares life with a rollercoaster. It says life is a roller coaster. It has

its ups and downs and can be scary and yet exciting. Much is conveyed in a few words.

This metaphor is comparing an exam to a walk in the park, implying to us that the exam was

easy.

Write a simile or metaphor for each of these, Make sure you use a mix of similes and

metaphors!

What do you think this simile means? Write an explanation in your book

Sort these into similes and metaphors

Similes and metaphors help to bring your writing alive with vivid images.

What does the language used in these metaphors tell us about the

characters?

Read these metaphors and describe what it tells us about the characters

1) Her spidery hand quickly wrapped round the boy’s wrist.

2) His leather-soled feet ignored the sharp shingle on the beach.

3) Dr Roper’s lips slithered into a smile.

4) Swimming in a sea of people, we braved the sales.

Write a couple of similes and metaphors for this image, make sure they make sense to the ‘story’
