What is food insecurity?Thelackofaccesstoenoughfoodtofullymeetbasicneedsatalltimesduetolackoffinancialresources. You may be food insecure if thequality,variety,andquantityoffoodyouareabletoaffordisinsufficient.

How does it impact health? Food insecurity has a negative impact onyoureducation.Worryingaboutfinancial insecuritiescanimpactyourfocus&abilitytocompletework.

Foodinsecurityoftenleadstonegativelychangingyour eating habits, including eliminating foodgroups, eating less than you need, or skippingmeals.Noteatingenoughcanleadtoalackofconcentration,irritability,andlowenergylevels.

Why is hunger on college campuses an increasing issue?Food insecurity is agrowing issuedue to risingtuitioncosts, lowandstagnantwages,andthehighcostofliving.

You’renotalone.AccordingtorecentsurveysatUVM,between20-25%ofUVMstudentsarefoodinsecure.Nationally,accordingtoa2016study,upto50%ofcollegestudentsarefoodinsecure.

Ifyou liveoncampus, theunlimitedmealplanguarentees meals all semester. If on the retailpoints plan, you must budget your points forthesemester.Thisplanisnotintendedtocovermeals for the entire semester. Youmay switchmeal plansduring thefirst twoweeks of everysemester.
