The book is a compilation ofarticlesbystudents, teachersandgeneralpublicselectedfromanessaycompetitionconductedbytheorganizationtoraisethepublic interest and awareness on thepromotionofpeaceandnon-violence. The Education Kalon lauded thenobleinitiativeoftheorganization,whichisintunewiththeprinciplesespousedbyHisHolinessthe14thDalaiLamainhiseffortst o p romo te a more p ea ce f u l andharmonioussociety.Kalonfurtherstressedthat non-violence as an imperativemoralbeliefforthe21stcenturyandapotenttoolin making any movement successful byciting a few examples of India’s freedommovement,thecivilrightsmovementoftheUS and the anti-apartheid movement inS ou th A f r i c a a s s ome s u c c e s s f u lmovementsde�inedbynon-violence. EducationKalonVisitsSchoolsinMundgod:After having participated in the InauguralFunction of Dalai Lama Institute for HigherEducation, Education Kalon, Mr. NgodupTseringparticipated in the First InternationalEmory-Tibet Symposium of Scholars andScientist held at Mundgod from 18-20December2016.HealsovisitedCSTMundgodtoobserveandmonitorthepreparationof50thGoldenJubileeCelebrationofCSTMundgod.Inthe afternoon of 20December, he visited STSMiddleandPrimarySchoolandinteractedwiththeteachers.

This dictionary will behelpfulforteacher'sresource.2.ReviewmeetingwasheldatCHTS,Sarahfrom10-21, October, 2016 to �inalize the TibetanlanguagetextbooksforclassIXtoXIIbasedontheCBSEnewcurriculam.Committeememberscomprises of Education Council director,concerned Tibetan language members andtextbook editors. The textbook will beimplementingfrom2017academicsession.3.SciencetextbookreviewcommitteemembersheldreviewmeetingatNyatrihallfrom8thto11th November 2016 and from 28th to 29thNovember2017respectivelyand�inalizedthesciencetextbookofclassIIItoV.

participants under different administrations viz,Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society and TibetanChildren’sVillage. To achieve the aims of the EGR project,workshopswereorganisedtobuildcapacityofalltheprimaryteachers.Morethan500teachershavealreadyparticipated inprofessionaldevelopmentworkshopsandtheremaining80teacherswillbesupportedinthecomingyearbefore31stSeptember,2017. EGRprogrammeemphasizesfreereadingandwritingofTibetanLanguagefortheearlygraders.Theteachers were taught different strategies andmethodologieswhichhelp themto inculcatereadinghabitsinearlygradestudents.Theteacherstookkeeninterest and read theoretical and practical ideascontinuouslythroughouttheworkshop.Inaddition,alltheteacherstoldstoriesandanalyzedthem.TheEGRprogrammealsoemphasizesthesigni�icanceofstory-telling and poetry singing to teach reading in earlygrades.The teacherswere also taughthow to selectappropriatestories. Allinall,teachersshowedeagernesstolearnand teach reading in a dynamic way. The resourcepersons for the workshop were well knowneducationalist Prof. Krishna Kumar and Dr. LatikaGuptafromDepartmentofEducation,DelhiUniversity. Teacherparticipantsengagedinworkshopactivities

Mr. Tenzin Dorjee, Head of Traditional and ModernAcademic Section, Department of Education, CTA,visited�ivePrimarySchoolsandaMiddleSchoolfrom1st–19thOctober2016locatedinMainpat,Bhandara,

Chandragiri and Mundgod. These six schools weretransferredtoSambhotaTibetanSchoolSociety,DharamsalainJune-July2016. Theprimarypurposeofthevisitistounderstandthe current status of these schools so as to provideadministrativeguidanceandat thesametimetoorganizeschool-basedteacherprofessionaldevelopmentworkshopfortheschools’teachers.Duringthevisits,Mr.TenzinDorjeeprovidedbasic signi�icantadministrativeguidance for thenewHeadmasters,Of�iceSecretariesandtheAccountants.He also observed classroom teaching and gave necessaryfeedbackswhererequired.Intheafternoons,heorganizedschool-basedTPDworkshopforthetotalof47teachersfromalltheabovementionedschools. The�irstdayofTPDWorkshopwasfocusedonthechapter2,3and5ofBasicEducationPolicy(BEP)oftheCTA.Thediscussionswereheldthereafteronhowtoimplementthefouraimsofgivingeducationintheclassroomteaching-learning environment. Collaborative practices andindividualprofessionaldevelopmentforteachersbasedTPDmanualwerealsointroduced. Onthesecondday,therolesand responsibilities of the teachers in implementingcontinuousandcomprehensiveevaluationwerediscussed.The teachers were further provided with the hands-onpractice on maintenance of formative and summativeassessmentrecordsinexcelsheets.Manystudent-centeredlearningactivitieswerecarriedoutinbetweenthesessions.Duringhisvisits,Mr.TenzinDorjeegaveatalktotheparentshighlighting the meaning, purpose and aims of givingeducationasperBEPclauses.Inhisaddress,heurgedtheparentstotakemoreactiveroleintheirchildren’seducationandrequestedtheParentsTeacherAssociationmemberstostrengthentheirrolesinsupportingandfacilitatingtothesame end. This program was funded by Global Affairs,Canada.

EarlyGradeReadingWorkshopThe Department of Education organised a �ive-dayworkshoponEarlyGradeReadingforPrimaryTeachersatTibetan Children’s Village Gopalpur from 9 – 13 October2016.Theworkshop isbeingattendedby19participantsfrom various schools under Tibetan Homes Foundation(THF),SambhotaTibetanSchoolsSociety(STSS)&TibetanChildren Village (TCV).The workshop aims at buildingcapacity of all the primary teachers who teach varioussubjects in the Tibetan schools in India and secondly toenablecultureofreadingamongtheearlygraders. Thecurrentbatchofparticipantsincludeteacherswhoteachdifferentsubjectsinprimaryschool.TheteachersengagedwiththeimportanceofpromotinglifelongreadingcultureamongTibetanchildren.Theteachersparticipatedveryactivelyandhaveshownkeeneagernesstoimplementvariouschildcentricpedagogies. Asapartofthefollow-upvisit,theresourcepersonwillvisitalltheschoolsandobservetheclassofEnglishandTibetanteacherstomonitorandmeasuretheimpactoftheEarlyGradeReadingWorkshop.

ExposureVisitforTibetanSchoolLibrarians:TheDepartmentofEducation,CTA organizeda5-dayExposure Visits for Tibetan School Librarians atBangalore from 31 October, 2016 to 4 November,2016.Thevisitwasinitiatedasapartof"EmpoweringTibetan Librarians and Strengthening of Libraries''.The visit was participated by 13 librarians underdifferent administrations viz. Tibetan Children'sVillage, Tibetan Homes Foundation and SambhotaTibetan Schools Society. The school librarians had awonderfulexperienceduringtheirvisittoCenterforLearningandTheValleySchool inBangalore.Duringthe visit, they got opportunity to expand theirknowledgethroughexperiencesharingsessions,visittothelibraries,andvisittobookshopswithabudgetofRs1000foreachlibrariantobuybooksoftheirchoice.TheexposurevisitwasfundedbyUSAIDthroughTheTibetFund.

LeadershipWorkshopforClassXStudents:TheDepartmentofEducationorganizedaLeadershipWorkshopforClassXstudentsfrom20�27December,2016 at Lower TCV School. The workshop wasattendedby283studentsofClassXaccompaniedby31Teachers from Tibetan Schools located in India andNepal. The objective of this event was to developleadership skills among students and to build theircapacitytoleadthefutureTibetansociety.Duringtheworkshop,PresidentDr.LobsangSangay,CTA,AcharyaYeshiPhuntsok,DeputySpeaker,TibetanParliamentinExileandfewotherResourcePersonsweregavetalkandpresentationsonmanyimportanttopicssuchasLeadershipQuality,PreservationofTibetanLanguage,Evolution of Tibetan Democracy, Relation betweenIndiaandTibet,Con�lictResolution,BasicEducationPolicy, Non-Violence, Counselling, Scholarships, etc.WealsoinvitedGadenPhodrangawardeestointeractandsharetheirlearningexperienceswiththestudents.Thisworkshop presented the participating students

withtherareopportunitytointeractandminglewithotherTibetanstudentsfromdifferentschools.TheWorkshopwasfundedbyUSAIDthroughTheTibetFund.

ParticipationinNationalLevelScienceExhibition:The Department of Education, CTA could enableparticipation of Tibetan Homes School in the 43rdJAWAHARLALNEHRUNATIONALSCIENCE,MATHEMATICSAND ENVIRONMENT EXHIBITION being organized byNCERTatBengaluru InternationalExhibitionCentre fromDecember 13 to 19, 2016. The JNNSMEE actually is aculminating activity of a series of exhibitions at district,zonal,regional,stateleveland�inallyattheNationalLevel.However, the Department of Education after a yearlongeffort could seek approval from NCERT for directparticipation of Tibetan schools in the National LevelExhibi t ion as one ent i ty t i t led Central T ibetanAdministration,CTASchool.Beingdone for �irst time, theDepartmentofEducationcalledentriesfromthreeschoolsviz., THF Mussoorie, TCV Selakui and CST Mundgod forparticipation.Outof10entries,NCERTselectedtwomodelsfor display at the National Level Exhibition. One studentnamedMs.PemaYangzomandherguideTeacherMs.UrmilKenderifromTHFMussoorieandtheDoEdealingof�icer,Ms.PassangChokpa,ScienceEducationOf�icerrepresentedtheCTAteamattheNationalLevelExhibitionwithamodelonBiogas where children from altogether 193 schools haveparticipated.Theprimaryobjectiveof theexhibition is toprovideforumforchildrentopursuetheirnaturalcuriosity,creativity, innovation and inventiveness and sensitivity tolocalaswellasglobalproblems.

TheCentralTibetanAdministrationstrivestostrengthentheself-reliance and resilience of Tibetans and Tibetancommunities.Thus,theroleofdevelopingentrepreneurshipamong Tibetan community has been recognized as animportantstepamongmanyotherstowardsthatend.CTAencourages Tibetan youths to take up entrepreneurialactivities and strives to provide assistance and supportservicesthatfacilitatestart-upprocess. The Department of Education also endeavors to

spreadawarenessontheentrepreneurshipamongtheT i be t an ch i l d ren i n t he s choo l s t o adop tentrepreneurshipasaprofession in their future.Forthis reason, the department has organized half dayworkshop on the Entrepreneurship Awarenessprogram from 18-24 October 2016 in �ive TibetanSecondary schools. A total of 848 students fromTibetanChildrenVillageChauntra,SambhotaTibetanSchool Chauntra, TCV Lower Dharamsala, MewoenTsuglagPetoenandTibetanHomesFoundationRajpurtookpartintheworkshop.Theworkshopfocusesontheunderstandingthemeaningandcharacteristicsofentrepreneurship. It also aims to familiarize theparticipants with the eminent entrepreneurs in oursociety with successful stories. Different activitieswerecarriedoutduringtheworkshopandtheactiveparticipationfromtheparticipantsmadetheeventfarmoreengaging. TheresourcepersonfortheworkshopwasMr.TenzinNorsang,StudentsProgramOf�iceratTibetanEnterpreneur Development-Central TibetanAdministration.ThedepartmentwouldliketoextenditsgratitudetotheSwedishOrganizationforIndividualRelief(SOIR-IM)forsponsoringthisprogram.

TRADITIONALSECTIONMiddleSchoolTibetanTeacherWorkshopIt has become increasingly important for people tohavegoodwritingskillsforprofessionandacademics.Peopleoftenjudgeone’sintellectorlearningbasedonthe ability to communicate effectively in writing.Reading and writing entails knowing how to readbetweenthelines,tocompose,persuade,understandandrespond.Inordertoempowerboththeteacherandstudents in their writing ability, the Department ofEducation organized Writing Composition and itsTeachingMethodologyforthemiddleschoolTibetanteacher at Center for Higher Tibetan Studies, SarahCollege, based in Dharamsala. The workshops werecarriedoutfrom4-12November2016andfrom16-24November 2016 respectively. It was attended by 42teachers(35malesand7females).ThisworkshopwasfundedbyGlobalAffairs,Canada.

PUBLICATIONNEWSMany research studieshave shown that childrenwhoareexposedtolearningtoreadintheirnativelanguagewillhavebetterchancesinlearningtoread,speak,andwriteinthesecondlanguage.ThedepartmentalsoaspirestoexposetheTibetanchildrentoasmanychildrenbooksaspossibleintheTibetanlanguage. Thisyear,thedepartmenthaspublishedPhayulShejaiBangzod,achildren'smagazinewith10issuesannually, Gangjong for class 3 and below, abridged GesarEpisodesandotherrelevantbooksforclass6andabove. The department has also published two pictorialbooksentitledKinTaroandTheMagicHorse,whichwereoriginallywritteninforeignlanguages.TheSecondvolumeof Tibetan Corpse story entitled Compilation of TibetanCorpse Stories for Childrenwas also published. All thesebooksweredistributedamongtheTibetanschoolsinIndiaandNepal. We thank our donors Danish InternationalDevelopment Agency (DANIDA) and (ARTIC) for theirgenerouscontributioninmakingthisprojectpossible.
