Serving Students with Disabilities

on Baylor’s Campus

Office of Access and Learning Accommodation

Mission

To create an encouraging, supportive, and caring environment where students

feel they are accepted and valued as individuals. We achieve this environment

by showing compassion, patience, and open-mindedness as well as through

teaching responsibility.

Purpose

• To offer students equal opportunities to excel in the classroom.

• Review disability documentation in order to determine appropriate academic

accommodations for individual students.

• Collaborate with faculty, staff and administration.

• Provide information to students, parents, faculty and staff.

Types of Disabilities:

Physical Impairments: physiological disorder/condition or anatomical loss,

which may affect one or more body systems

Mental Impairment: psychological disorder, such as intellectual disability and

specific learning disabilities

Why are we required to accommodate students with disabilities?

In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the

ADA of 1990, and The ADA Amendments Act of 2008, Baylor is

committed to ensuring that all qualified students with disabilities have the

opportunity to pursue postsecondary education without barriers to

instruction and services.

Student Responsibilities

• Self-identify their disability and their disability related needs to the appropriate office.

• Provide current and complete documentation of disability.

• Formally request needed accommodations and services in a timely manner.

• Notify OALA of any changes or concerns in needed services or accommodations.

• Abide by the student code of conduct set by the university.

• Use services responsibly and treat service providers and faculty with respect and courtesy.

• Abide by the policies set forth by OALA.

Faculty and Staff Responsibilities

• Refer students to OALA to have the disability documented and appropriate accommodations determined.

• Provide reasonable accommodations.

• Show confidence in the students’ abilities to achieve their intellectual, personal, and professional potential.

• Keep disability-related information confidential, discussing it only with people who have a valid reason to know.

• Discuss all student-related information directly with the student; communication is key.

Do not assume that a person who appears to be disabled needs

assistance.

Assisting and accommodating a student without his or her

request is considered discriminatory.

The design and implementation of disability-related

accommodations is a collaborative process involving the

student, OALA, faculty and Baylor staff.

Communication is key.
