The Fuchs Award is given annually to an 8th grader (students in their post-b'nai mitzvah year) who demonstrates dedication to bar/bat mitzvah studies, dedication to the Temple community, and dedication to the larger community. Originally endowed before Morton passed away in 2000, the award now provides us the opportunity to honor the memories of both Morton and Ilona Fuchs. On Friday, May 12th, their daughter, Marta Fuchs presented the award to Jonathan Herbst and Leah Laska-Sandleman. Congratulations to both of them!
Jonathan Herbst. Having watched his older brother, Elliott, go through the process of preparing for his bar mitzvah, Jonathan knew what was expected of him and what he wanted to accomplish.
Attending services regularly with his family, combined with his musical ear, he had a strong foundation for leading services. Jonathan asked to start studying his Torah and haftarah portions early so that he could chant as much as possible. On his bar mitzvah Shabbat, Jonathan led most of the services on his own and read most of the Torah portion. Jonathan is a member of the Jewish Youth Orchestra, as well as our USY Youth Group.
Leah Laska-Sandleman. As she was
approaching the age of 13, Leah made the choice to dedicate herself to her studies and become a bat mitzvah. In the spring of 2015, Leah and her mom met with me to discuss the possibility of her joining the Hei class for the 2015-2016 school year. We discussed the various opportunities and challenges. As a result of that conversation, Leah began private tutoring – to learn both how to read Hebrew and about Judaism. On the Shabbat of her celebration, Leah led clearly and confidently. Her theme “bucket-filling” inspired a message of kindness. As a sign of her appreciation, Leah donated the “bucket-filling” series of books to the LBSRS library. Leah regularly participates in PJTC’s Friday night services as part of the davening team. Marta Fuchs presented Jonathan Herbst and
Leah Laska-Sandleman with the Fuchs Award at services on May 12.

On Wednesday, June 21, the Tzofim, the Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan, will be returning to PJTC for the seventh year in a row. They are a talented and energetic group of seventeen-year-old Israelis, one of several such troupes travelling across North America this summer as ambassadors of the State of Israel. The ten teenagers, five girls and five boys, come from all around Israel. Their families hail from many different backgrounds: Sephardic, Ashkenazi, Yemenite, and Ethiopian. Each one brings his or her life experiences to the Caravan. When they return to Israel in the fall, they’ll be
entering their senior year in high school after which they’ll be joining the Israel Defense Forces.
When the Scouts take the stage, with enthusiasm and joy, they’ll paint a picture of their homeland that is poignant and exuberant. Stay and enjoy ice cream after the show.
It’s customary for the Scouts to be hosted by synagogue families for the evening after the performance. If you’d be interested in hosting a Scout or two, please contact Jeff Landau at JL4624@pacbell.net or (818) 952-9521.

B'nai Mitzvah CelebrationsShane Jason Balian will be called to
the Torah as a bar mitzvah on June 3. The son of Judy and Steve Balian, younger brother of Jacob and older brother of Naomi, Shane is in seventh grade at John Marshall Fundamental School in Pasadena.
Shane enjoys his passions for soccer and music by playing for Galaxy FC in the Villa-Parke League and the Middle
School Band at Marshall, respectively. For his mitzvah project, he volunteered for the AYSO VIP Program. In his capacity as a “buddy,” he helped individuals with physical and mental disabilities participate in mainstream soccer by practicing and playing for a team on a weekly basis. Shane also took his mitzvah project a step further by helping advertise the VIP Program in an outreach effort to further promote the program. In his spare time, Shane enjoys hanging with family and friends, expanding his knowledge of WWII history, the MARVEL universe, playing video games, paint-balling and simply being a kid.
Benjamin Karish, son of Haley and Marc Karish, will be called to the Torah on June 17. Ben, older brother of Kate, and younger brother of Michael, is a seventh grader at Walter Reed Middle School in Studio City. He is an alumnus of B’nai Simcha Preschool and Willard Elementary.
Ben enjoys math and science (and competing in each), reading, traveling
with his family, playing chess, and soccer. For his mitzvah project, Ben and his friend and LBSRS classmate Shane Balian incorporated their love of soccer and a desire to help others by being AYSO VIP buddies to special needs individuals who want to play soccer but struggle on a mainstream team. Ben and Shane practiced on Wednesdays with their VIP team and played games on Sundays. Disappointed in the turnout of players for such a large region, Ben and Shane felt the need to help further by (better) advertising VIP soccer. Ask Ben if you want more info on this great program!
Ben also chaired his family’s JDRI fundraising team for its annual Walk this past October. The team, Kate Crusade, consisted of 65 people and raised over $5,500 towards a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Rubin Hassman, son of Dr. George Hassman & Martin Sottile Hassman, is excited to become a bar mitzvah on June 24, together with his twin, Ashley. He attends La Cañada Middle School where he strives for and obtains academic excellence. Over the years he has received numerous accolades for academic scholarship and good citizenship from both his teachers and peers.
In the past Rubin has played on local soccer, baseball, and basketball teams. He is a true team player, both on and off the field. In his free time he enjoys playing sports and video games with his friends.
Rubin hopes to attend a top university to study engineering.
Ashley Hassman, daughter of Dr. George Hassman and Martin Sottile Hassman and twin to Rubin, is looking forward to becoming a bat mitzvah on June 24. She attends La Cañada Middle School where she is active in the Women’s Choral Ensemble, which was recently awarded best in show at the 2017 vocal competitions in Orange County.
In 2014, Ashley won first place in her school’s Reflections photography contest. She is an accomplished artist and athlete, who has been a member of both the Rose Bowl swim team and water polo team.
In her free time she enjoys traveling, hanging out with friends, and staying up-to-date with current events and social media. Ashley’s next goal is to learn guitar. She is an advocate for women’s equality, animal rights, and social justice.
Lucas Ezra Mondaca, son of Daisy and Ricardo Mondaca, will be called to the Torah to celebrate his bar mitzvah on June 10.
Lucas is a seventh grader at Rosemont Middle school. He is an avid athlete and is always working on improving his soccer, skateboard and football skills. He aspires to attend USC and play football as a Trojan. As a member of AYSO 13, he loves to score soccer goals that help his team win. Lucas has
a special talent as a witty and funny writer of short stories. He has received praises from many of his teachers for his creative imagination. He is always in search of the great story he will write one day.
For his mitzvah project he has put together small caring packages for the homeless, that he keeps in the car and hands out when he sees people in need. He hopes to inspire others to do the same.
Do you have furniture/clothes/other items in good condition your were planning to either donate or sell? Consider saving them to support our youth groups! On Sunday morning June 11, USY will be running a garage sale at PJTC. Contact Melissa to coordinate a drop off date at usy@pjtc.net.

You may have noticed that there wasn’t a Sisterhood column in May. At the end of April we became the grandparents of Samara and Silas, followed two weeks later by the death of my mother-in-law, Ruth (z”l). My
family is used to the overlap of simchas and sadness. Those of you who have been part of PJTC for a long time may remember that my mother of blessed memory passed away the week of my younger son’s bar mitzvah. All these events show the importance of being part of a caring community. Members of PJTC share the moments of joy and rally in times of sorrow. Food appears, minyans happen, and notes fill the mailbox. We also share these moments by hosting onegs and kiddushes to mark events.
Being part of this community means that you are also the ones on the giving side when congregants need assistance or wish to share their joy. Joining Sisterhood and participating in our events is a wonderful way to enter the community. On June 7 we will be installing our new Sisterhood board at a lovely dinner at the Arboretum. I urge you to attend. We will all have a chance to thank the hard-working women who have made this such a successful year, meet the new board, and have a relaxing evening on the terrace. It is a great time to connect with friends or make new ones. Also, open your Sisterhood emails each Sunday to see what is happening, and join us in our many activities. I am always sad when someone mentions an event they missed because they hadn’t bothered to open the email. If you are not on our email list, let us know.
I am excited to be starting my second year as president of this vibrant and committed group of women. Please join us.
It's Happening with Sisterhood
Dear PJTC Community,
We want to sincerely thank the PJTC community for their love and support during this challenging time in our lives by the loss of our son Andrew.
Your thoughtfulness and kindness are greatly appreciated.

Men's Club
It is with heartfelt sadness that Men’s Club bids farewell to our Operations Manager, Bruce Applebaum who always went out of his way to help us. At the same time, it is with joy that we learned that as of July, Bruce will be joining us on the Men’s Club Board.
Bruce will be installed along with the rest of our incoming Men’s Club Board at our annual general membership breakfast on Sunday, June 11. We will have a wonderful speaker for this event, Howard Slavin, an NFL Referee who has done the video replay reviews for the challenges on the field. All football fans and others are welcome to join us.
In April, we had a very successful and well attended Man of the Year dinner honoring Fred Rotenberg for all he has done for Men’s Club and the community. All enjoyed a Deli Dinner and entertainment by singer Jane Fuller accompanied by Mike Gallegos.
Congratulations to our June b’nai mitvah: Shane Balian (June 3), Lucas Mondaca (June 10), Ben Karish (June 17) and Ashley and Rubin Hassman (June 24). Men’s Club looks forward to presenting each one with a yad. Mazel tov to their proud families too.

Weizmann Day School : Highlights of the School Year
by Lisa Feldman, M.A. Ed. Head of Weizmann Day School
It is hard to believe that another school year is coming to an end on June 15. Here are some of the highlights of our year:
1. Maximum Awards of Accreditation – The Western Association of Schools and
Colleges (WASC) accredits schools that meet high standards for excellence. After a multi-
year process –including an extensive self-study report involving all stakeholders and a 3-day on-site accreditation visit –WASC has awarded us a full six years of accreditation, the maximum permitted term. We also expect to achieve the highest level of accreditation from the Builders of Jewish Education.
2. Hummus Event – In May, Weizmann had the honor of screening the documentary “Life & Hummus” at the Pasadena Laemmle Theater followed by Q&A and hummus tasting. We were thrilled to promote the artistic talent of one of our alumni, Alex Matros, and bring together pillars of the Weizmann community. Thank you to all who supported this event!
3. Mindfulness Training – This school year included the introduction of mindfulness classes for teachers and students alike. Weizmann was fortunate to have mindfulness lessons provided by instructor Hilary English Misiano. We learned how to stop amidst a whirlwind of activity and check in with ourselves so we can stay as present and focused as possible.
4. Burrow Match Challenge – Although we were sad to say goodbye to long-time friends and supporters Nurit and Simon Burrow, we were thrilled to honor them at a special event and to receive their $10,000 challenge grant. Nurit and Simon will match all new and increased donations to Weizmann’s Annual Fund up to a total of $10,000. We are still accepting donations for this match!
Thank you for your help with making the 2016-17 school year a successful one.

Committee Seeks New MembersWhat is Judaism without life-long learning? PJTC”s
Adult Education Committee has been very active, planning and presenting many worthwhile programs including bagel breakfasts, classes, film screenings, speakers, scholar-in-residence weekends, workshops, etc. As vibrant, innovative, and energetic as this group is, there is still opportunity for new ideas and additional programs, particularly in the area of family education. New members would be welcome. This committee functions with very few meetings, much of the organizing being handled through email communication. If you are interested, please email me at carolsofer@yahoo.com.

Construction Projects This SummerBack in April, the PJTC Board of Directors approved
the summer maintenance and beautification projects to include the remodeling of the main building women’s and men’s bathrooms, interior remodel of Wohlmann Hall, exterior painting of all buildings, pergola replacement, and the main building’s solar project. The goal is to be finished before school starts in September.
Facilities Committee Chair, Mike Kronsburg will be working closely with our Facilities Manager Robert Brown, and Executive Director Beryl Strauss to supervise the work.
Please know that we will do our best to ensure that disruptions of operations will be held to minimum. Contact beryl@pjtc.net for any questions you may have.
