Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life

as a ransom for many.”

“Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Savior mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, "Follow Me." There is need of coming close to the

people by personal effort. If less time were given to sermonizing, and more time were spent in personal ministry, greater results would be

seen. The poor are to be relieved, the sick cared for, the sorrowing and the bereaved comforted, the ignorant instructed, the

inexperienced counseled. We are to weep with those that weep, and rejoice with those that rejoice. Accompanied by the power of persuasion,

the power of prayer, the power of the love of God, this work will not, cannot, be without fruit.” (Ministry of Healing 143-144)

Evangelism Through Service

Acts of Love + Persistent Over Time = Openness to the Spiritual

Matters

10 Reasons to Serve

1. Jesus did it.

Acts 10:38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around

doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because

God was with him.”

There are 37 recorded miracles of Jesus in the New Testament. There

is one written sermon of Jesus (sermon on the mount).

This goes along with the counsel given: “If less time were given to sermonizing, and more time were spent in personal ministry, greater

results would be seen”.

(Ministry of Healing, 143)

2. God’s original plan.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do

good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

3. It is especially significant to Millenials

Reason #2 – Shallow. “Among Mosaics, the most common perception of churches is that they are

boring. Easy platitudes, proof texting, and formulaic slogans have anesthetized many young

adults, leaving them with no idea of the gravity and power of following Christ. Few young

Christians can coherently connect their faith with their gifts, abilities, and passions. In other words, the Christianity they received does not give them

a sense of calling.”

Percentage of 18- to 29-year-olds who have a Christian background

completely true of me, completely or mostly true of me

Church is boring.                                                16%                                  31%

Faith is not relevant to my career or my interests. 13%                                  24%

My church does not prepare me for real life.           9%                                  23%

Served the poor through my church 24%         20%

Learned about how Christians can positively contribute to society                  28%         28%

Learned to view my gifts and passions as part of God’s calling                      25%         26%

Better understood my purpose in life through church                                     23%         25%

Learned how the Bible applies to my field or interest area                             10%         16%

4. Our kindness can have an eternal impact

Romans 2:4 (NASB) “Or do you think lightly of the riches of His

kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to

repentance?”

Think for a moment about the implications:

a. Fact- God’s kindness leads to repentance. How is his kindness shown to people?

b. Fact- God’s kindness is expressed by the works of his people towards others!

c. Fact- God’s kindness, when expressed, causes others to praise God.

(2Corinthians 9:13)

5. It destroys selfishness.

1. We serve because of Jesus. He is the reason we serve. He commanded it, modeled and blesses it. Ephesians 6:7

2. We serve others. It’s not about feeling good about ourselves. It’s not about listing, publishing, or congratulating ourselves for being service oriented once a year. It’s about

meeting the needs of our communities with an “others focused” spirit. Galatians 5:13

3. We serve without expectations. Free means free. We look for opportunities to share God’s love, but we serve with no

strings attached, we take no donations, and we never charge. Mathew 6:2-4

6. It proves that we are his disciples.

Romans 7:4

…And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a

result, we can produce a harvest of good deeds for God.

John 13:35 Your love for one another will prove to

the world that you are my disciples.”

7. It engages outsiders.

It’s all about love, and love can indeed “conquer all”. When we express love, we break down preconceived concepts about

the church and God.

Romans 12:10

When we serve, we impact three groups of people in a positive way- the one who serves, the ones you serve, and the ones you serve with.

8. It takes us out of our comfort zone.

It’s more than outreach, its reaching out. Even to those

who don’t look, believe, speak, or act like us. That includes our

enemies! Mathew 5:46-48

9. It’s the best use of my life.

It can change a person’s life. For eternity.

I can:

Spend my life.

Waste my life.

Invest my life.

10. I will be judged and rewarded by it.

John 12:26, Jesus said, "My Father will honor the ones who serve Me."

Matthew 25:21 He says, "Well done good and faithful servants. You've been faithful in a few things. I'll put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness."
