clothes, and he had not lived in a

house, but among the tombs. [Nightand day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always cryingout and bruising himself with stones(Mk. 5:5)…]

• Satan is the leader of demons (Rev. 12:9)

• Satan’s tactics involve lies & deception (John 8:44)

“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is

a liar and the father of lies.”~ Jesus of Nazareth in

The Gospel of John (8:44)

Demonology 101

• Satan is the leader of fallen angels (Rev. 12:9)

• Satan’s tactics involve lies & deception (Rev. 12:9)

• Satan hates humanity b/c he hates God, and humans bear the image of God (Gen. 2-3)

When he saw Jesus, he cried out

Luke 8:28

and fell down before him and saidwith a loud voice, “What have you todo with me, Jesus, Son of the MostHigh God? I beg you, do not tormentme….”

~ Gospel of Luke (4:34)

“What have you to do with us, Jesus of

Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us…?

“…the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”

~ Jesus of Nazareth in the Gospel of Matthew (25:41)

~ The Apostle John in Revelation 20:10

“…and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the

lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and

the false prophet were, and they will be

tormented day and night forever and ever.”

For he had commanded the unclean

Luke 8:29

spirit to come out of the man. (Formany a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and boundwith chains and shackles, but hewould break the bonds and be

…driven by the demon into the

Luke 8:29

desert…).

Jesus then asked him, “What is your

Luke 8:30-31

name?” And he said, “Legion,” formany demons had entered him. Andthey begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss….

“We can smell the fear of the demons in the

way they pleaded with Jesus…. Some people

may not believe in hell, but the demons

certainly do.”

Now a large herd of pigs [numbering

Luke 8:32-33

about 2000 (Mk. 5:13)] was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gavethem permission. Then the demonscame out of the man and entered thepigs, and the herd rushed down the

…steep bank and were drowned.

Luke 8:33-34

When the herdsmen saw what hadhappened, they fled and told it in thecity and in the country….

Then the people went out to see

Luke 8:35-36

what had happened, and they cameto Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sittingat the feet of Jesus, clothed and in hisright mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them

…how the demon-possessed man

Luke 8:36-37

had been healed. Then all the peopleof the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart fromthem, for they were seized with greatfear. So he got into the boat and returned….

“In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers, to keep

them from seeing the light of the

gospel of the glory of Christ.”

~ The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:4

The man from whom the demons

Luke 8:38-39

had gone out begged that he mightbe with him, but Jesus sent him awaysaying, “Return to your home, and

Luke 8:38-39

…declare how much God has donefor you. And he went away, proclaim-ing how much Jesus had done for him.

Why does Luke record this account in his historical

biography of Jesus?

Important Question

In Jesus we find not only our salvation

but also our sanity.

Main Idea

Decide what you will do with Jesus1

“There are only two kinds of people—those who say, ‘Thy will be done’ to God or those to whom God in the

end says, ‘Thy will be done.’ All that are in

Hell choose it.” ~ CS Lewis “The Great Divorce”

Adopt Jesus’ view of reality

There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall

about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to

believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They

themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist and

magician with the same delight.
