What is a serial?

A resource • issued in successive parts• usually bearing numbering• that has no predetermined conclusion (e.g., a

periodical, a monographic series, a newspaper).

Includes resources that exhibit characteristics of serials, such as successive issues, numbering and frequency, but whose duration is limited (e.g., newsletters of events) and reproductions of serials.

• Alternative rule– If the resource consists of microform or computer images,

use an eye-readable label bearing a title that is permanently printed on or affixed to the resource

• LC-PCC PS– Don’t apply the alternative for MF– Chief source for MF is the original title source– Chief source for direct access ER is eye-readable label
