Pastor’s Report to Consistory-August 4, 2014
In July I attended an eight day silent retreat at the West Virginia Institute for Spirituality in Charleston, WV. I
don’t know if folks really understand how draining the work that I do can be, and believe me, before I went I was
really drained. My spiritual director told me that over the past months God was preparing me to be ready for the
retreat, and that certainly was true. I WAS READY! It was a wonderful 8 days that really recharged my batteries
and nurtured my spirit so that I was centered and focused to face the deluge of pastoral care that awaited me upon
my return. I am very fortunate that my spiritual director also works at Clelian Heights and so I will be able to meet
with her monthly throughout the year, a practice that I had neglected this past year. It is important for me to be
spiritually centered in order to provide centered and competent pastoral leadership to the congregation.
On July 16 we celebrated the life of Mildred Hardenstine who passed away July 9, on July 18 we celebrated the
life of Charles Alvin Deibler who passed on July 16, on July 21 I offered prayers at the graveside of Brian Bradley
the son of Sally Bradley who passed in 2013 and on July 25 I officiated at a funeral for Nella Han, who was not a
member, but did not have a church and this was an outreach for Denmark Manor.
We offered the sacrament of Christian Baptism to Kimberly Eileen Kanouff on July 13 and on July 19, T.J. Kunkle
and Lindsay (Durst) Kunkle were wed. I would especially like to thank Wade Anderson for all of the quick
changes and extra cleaning that he did between the funeral of Alvin Deibler and the wedding, and also Robin Brau-
tigam our volunteer wedding coordinator. Also, Lynn Zimmerman did a wonderful job at organizing a funeral
luncheon for the Deibler family and I appreciate all of the people who helped or contributed in any way. You are
my partners in ministry as are Robin and Wade on all of these occasions of transition.
I have also been to visit several of our homebound and persons in care facilities. Added to this list is David Cun-
ningham who is now at Emeritus in Latrobe. I attended a dinner in honor of Char Burch, our Interim Conference
Minister who has now finished her work as David Ackerman began his position as Conference Minister on
August 1.
I have met with the Choir Director Search Committee which includes Debi McIlvaine, Trude Hayes and Steve
Cherep as well as Ira Thomas and me. We went over the job description and employment agreement and with a
polling of the choir and the approval of consistory have changed the position from 10 months to 9 months. We
advertised in the Tribune Review on Sunday July 27 which also places the ad on the website Monster.com for one
month and have also put it in the Penn-Franklin News for three weeks. I also sent the ad to the e-mail list of the
Westmoreland Choral Society which includes about 500 names. The deadline for resumes is August 14. To date
we have one resume through Monster.com and the Committee will be meeting to review resumes on August 18.
I have done quite a bit of work regarding the CROP Walk and communicating with families regarding our vacation
Bible School program. I have been asked to be in charge of the Westmoreland Association Education Event in
October, as well. I thank Rheba who has worked hard in doing the advance bulletins before I left for vacation on
August 4.
Respectfully submitted,
Meredith Hutchison

Church World Service School Kits
During the months of August and September, we are as-
sembling school kits again. UCC Disaster Ministries was
recently notified that stock supplies of Church World Ser-
vice School Kits were very low due in part to the ongoing
situation in Syria. School Kits give children in impover-
ished schools, refugee camps, or other difficult settings
some of the basic tools for learning.
To assemble a School Kit you will need:
One pair of blunt metal scissors (rounded tip)
Three 70-count spiral notebooks or notebooks totaling
200-210 pages (no loose-leaf or filler paper)
One 30-centimeter ruler (12")
One hand-held
pencil sharpener
One large eraser
Six new pencils
with erasers
One box of 24
crayons
Please follow the
list exactly so that
items do not have to be replaced.
Also it would be of help to include
the processing and shipping cost
of $2 per kit.
Sincere thanks from our
Church members and
Mission Team to Virginia Creese for sewing
and assembly of 61 School Kit bags! Let’s get
them filled!
School Kit items are economical and available at Dollar stores, WalMart, Target.
HELP WANTED! On Monday, September 8 at
1:00PM a photographer will be at the Church
to photograph a group stuffing the School
Kits with supplies. Help is needed. If you can
come, please let Joyfa Kelly know.

Welcome to our
Worship. Denmark Manor is part of the
United Church of Christ in
which congregations make the
decisions about the operation
and faith stance of the Church.
We believe in freedom of con-
science, and do not tell others
what doctrine they must accept.
We affirm the work of the Trin-
ity, the authority of the Bible
and that God is still speaking in
this world.
