When a person or organization has mission clarity and performs the mission with intense
focus and unrelenting consistency the mission will be accomplished.
Good Shepherd is a healthy and effective congregation with a positive reputation earned over decades of faithful ministry. I am and always have been proud to be pastor of this
congregation.
One of the things that enticed me to serve this congregation was a very solid mission
statement that had been produced several years prior to my coming here.
The fact is that most congregations develop a mission statement, set it aside and do what they have always done, and
never develop a new mission statement again.
But you have done something extraordinary. You have engaged a process of discerning the leading of the Holy Spirit and
from that process has come a new mission statement for a new era of ministry here at Good Shepherd:
Bringing God’s hope, help, and healing to our changing world.
This is the reason for our existence as a congregation because this is what we do and will do. And we will do it with intense
focus and unrelenting consistency and through us God will do more than we could have ever imagined.
I will be doing a sermon series this month on the mission statement but I want you all to realize this: God has already given us the victory. Your openness to the leading of the Holy Spirit and your willingness to do and give more to God’s mission is
the assurance that the mission will be accomplished!
In Christ,
Pastor Todd
From The Council // Vacation season is waning and it is now time to become engaged in what is shaping up to be an exciting season at Good Shepherd.
This past Saturday was “Wet and Wild” followed by GSLife picture party and Get Plugged In ministry fair on Sunday. The perfect start
for our church year. Many functions, events and opportunities are planned in the very near future. Please consult our website
www.gschurch.us frequently for a complete list, updates and details. Become involved.
Your leadership team has begun a new phase in the Visioning process. This ongoing project began in February. It is our intention
that this vision frame will be the primary tool guiding our church members and ministries for the next five to seven years. The shared
vision statement will go to Council for adoption in September, followed by a member vote to affirm our congregation’s mission
statement at the annual meeting in November, pursuant to the Good Shepherd Constitution.
A brief review of the steps accomplished:
1. Listening phase - surveys, personal interviews, community panel discussion
2. Vision Frame - constructed to document our mission, values, strategy, and measures.
3. Vision - long range vision established
4. Goals – established short term (1 year) and medium-term goals (3 year) to facilitate progress toward fulfilling our purpose map.
On Sunday, August 27, 31 motivated staff, leadership and members attended our Strategic Planning kick-off seminar prepared and
presented by Elizabeth Shults and Tammy Wilcox. Four milestone planning teams were confirmed: 1. Strategic planning. 2. Youth
and family. 3. Life phase and small groups. 4. Mission mentality. Guidelines were presented to assist the development and definition
of specific strategies, goals, objectives, actions and accountability standards consistent and in alignment with the vision frame that has
been developed.
Once again, we ask for your assistance. Please join us as we pray that God would provide each team member with the discernment to
develop plans relevant to our congregation and community that will ultimately glorify Him. If you have an area of concern or
recommendation you feel a planning team should address, please contact me and I will direct you to the appropriate team. Your input
is being utilized and is welcome.
In Christ,
Doug Stewart 916.488.2637 stewartd@winfirst.com

Good Shepherd Preschool // September 2017
Hello Friends of the Preschool,
Our official first day of school is September 1, 2017. We are excited to start this new school year. We begin each year with the theme
“All about You”. We learn about the children and their families and make projects that support the uniqueness and specialness that
each child is given by God.
If you’re looking for a way to help your preschool ministry:
Your preschool recycles aluminum, glass and plastic CA CRV (California Cash Redemption Value) items. Recycle Sunday coincides
with Preschool Sunday and is every third Sunday. The month of August raised about $75.00. This money is used to feed and care for
the classroom pets, a pizza party and some other things that are not in our budget.
Also on this Sunday, our needs and wants board is available in the courtyard. If you could take a tab, and return that item to the
church, we would appreciate it. If you would like to add us to your shopping list every other month, we are in constant need of
select-a-size paper towels, napkins and 5 ounce paper cups.
Other items: construction paper, glue, and tempera paint.
Just a reminder to Thrivent Choice Dollars Donors, you must actively
designate your dollars, they no longer give you reminders that those dollars
are available. Your donation helps to insure that our preschool can continue
to provide families with quality preschool and care. The last month, our
donation was $86.00. Thank you.
Shoppers at Bel-Air and Raley’s supermarkets can also help our preschool
by signing up for the extra credit program. Just go to the website and look
for Good Shepherd Preschool in the schools and organizations. Thanks.
Thank you for all you do to support our church preschool ministry.

iMPACT Update // Camp iMPACT
Simply put, we had 6-weeks of building relationships, having fun, and introducing about 50 community kids to Jesus this summer.
We had many new campers-- but nine (yes, that’s 9) of them were boys all entering kindergarten!
As a regular part of our camp day, we shared 2-meals together, completed crafts, played games, and provided lots of outdoor fun. Ministry-wise, a daily message was given, we prayed before we ate AND we also offered (during camp) the opportunity for kids to go through 1st Communion training with Ms. Cathleen (GS Kids & VBS Director) and Pastor Todd. Three kids went through this
training.
Youth Activities
Pop-Up in the Park: Staff showed up 3 times at Deterding Park this summer with pizzas, cold drinks,
and sporting items to engage with kids on their turf. It was simple and lots of fun.
PJs to Pews Sleepover: A fun Saturday night sleepover with 15 youth that led to attending church on
Sunday.
Boating trip at Folsom Lake: Thank you Chris Stewart for taking our Sons of Thunder and staff
boating in July. This was so much fun and a special treat for many of the boys.
iMPACT Sunday
On August 6th, we celebrated 20 Years of our iMPACT Outreach Program. We are so thankful to our iMPACT staff, alumni, kids and especially families who made it out to celebrate growing closer together as
we grow closer to Jesus.
Thank you to the amazing Missy Robertson who provided fantastic music for our celebration! Thanks to the whole GS work crew who helped with set-up and the Nacho Bar (top notch)!! And, special thanks to Good Shepherd for ALL of the camp food and school supplies gifted this summer. Our campers ate really well AND they went back to school
with added confidence.
Love God. Love Your Neighbor.
