SEPTEMBER 2016
An investment in knowledge
always pays the best interest.
Benjamin Franklin
Pastor Sue’s Newsletter Article
September 2016
SOMETIMES by David Whyte from
Everything is Waiting for You
Sometimes
if you move carefully
through the forest
breathing
like the ones
in the old stories
who could cross
a shimmering bed of dry leaves
without a sound,
you come
to a place
whose only task
is to trouble you
with tiny
but frightening requests
conceived out of nowhere
but in this place
beginning to lead everywhere.
Requests to stop what
you are doing right now,
and
to stop what you
are becoming
while you do it,
questions
that can make
or unmake
a life,
questions
that have patiently
waited for you,
questions
that have no right
to go away.
I really love this poem by David Whyte. I had to read it a
few times to really grasp its meaning and a few more
times after that to let it take hold of me.
Questions have a way of stopping us in our tracks. They
have a way of waiting for us while we dance around
them or try to ignore them. Sometimes questions wait a
long time for us to sit still and be uncomfortable
enough with our current life in order for us to do
something, anything that often begins “to lead
everywhere.” And those questions have no right to go
away and leave us alone.
What questions has God asked you that have troubled
you with “tiny but frightening requests”? What
questions have you asked God that seemed to be
“conceived out of nowhere but in this place beginning
to lead everywhere”? What questions are you ignoring
because you are uncertain whether or not you want
your life to be “unmade”? What are those questions that
have no right to go away?
Can we set some time aside each day and let God ask
us those questions? God will be patient and love us
through those times of sitting and squirming when we
wonder if we will be able to comply with the answer.
After all, God would never ask something of us that we
are not capable of doing—with God’s help.
I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to
have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned
the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of
having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things
through Him who strengthens me. Philippians 4: 12-13

FALL SUNDAY WORSHIP
BEGINS SEPTEMBER 11TH
8:00am & 10:30am
Christ Lutheran’s theme this year is Count Yourself Blessed.
Do you Count Yourself Blessed? What is your Greatest Joy in Life? Tell your story along with me
this Fall…
Christ Lutheran has a convenient, easy way to support your mission anywhere, anytime. Christ
Lutheran is excited to provide you with the convenience of Online and Mobile Phone Giving. This
process allows you to manage your funds anytime, anywhere!

Members Who Give Online
Although online giving is convenient, some of you may have had an uncomfortable feeling as the
offering plate is passed and you have nothing physically to place in it. Christ Lutheran now has a
new process in place. You will notice a basket of wooden nickels at the entrance of the
sanctuary. For those of you who give online, please take a token before entering the
sanctuary. When the offering plate is passed, place the token in the offering plate in lieu of your
offering envelope. If you are interested in online giving, please go to
http://www.christlutherandeforest.org and click on the GIVE tab, create a profile and a list of
ministries that Christ Lutheran supports will appear.
Count Yourself Blessed!

Invitation to explore your spiritual journey
M. Robert Mulholland, Jr. writes in Invitation to a Journey: A Road Map for Spiritual
Formation, “We live in an instant gratification culture. Just sit near a vending machine and watch
what happens when people do not get the product they have paid for. They will begin to complain
to anyone handy or even begin to abuse the machine. This silly example
illustrates a deeper dimension of our culture. We have generally come to expect immediate returns
on our investments of time and resources.”
We are all on a spiritual journey. Most of us don’t know what that means or where we are on that
path.
You are invited to join with Pastor Sue in reading and studying Invitation to a Journey. Gatherings
will be weekly, with two opportunities to accommodate as many people’s schedules as possible.
Every Other Monday evening — beginning on August 22nd at 6:30pm
Every Other Thursday morning — beginning on August 25th at 9:00am
Please pray fervently about being in one of the groups. It will be worth your time and energy.
For new members, the Christ Lutheran Church Women hold a Bake Sale and Raffle in the Friendship
Room in conjunction with the Lutefisk Dinner. Here is a sample of what our members bake or
prepare:
traditional Norwegian treats, brownies, cookies, bars, pastries,
breads, jams, jellies, horseradish, relishes, beet pickles
Still other members with different skills and talents create items for the raffle portion of the Bazaar.
Examples of items raffled in past years are:
paintings, carvings, table runners, floral arrangements,
wood working, homemade cards, quilts and jewelry
Some members have opted to donate gift cards for movies, food or gasoline. The sky is the limit!
Money generated from the Bazaar has been used for a wide variety of things throughout the years.
Some has stayed here at CLC for needs within our congregation. Most has been distributed to
outside organizations both close to home and worldwide, such as the DeForest Area Needs Network
(D.A.N.N.), the Salvation Army, Lutheran World Relief, Women’s Jail Chaplaincy, and others. Last year we
contributed to the new CLC roof project, D.A.N.N., Second Harvest and the Salvation Army.
So start thinking about your talent and what you can contribute. Any questions can be directed to Vicki
Sobczak, Bazaar Chair, at 846-2920 or email: vsobczak@yahoo.com
Grace Episcopal Men’s Shelter
We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you providing food, clothes,
linens, time and money in support of the Grace Meals for the homeless men of Madison and
surrounding area. You and Christ Lutheran Church have contributed thousands of meals over the
past 15 years and these folks are mighty thankful to you all!
This is also a good opportunity to inform new members how this important program works:
What: Provide delicious nutritious meals to the homeless men of Madison and Dane County.
Where: Grace Episcopal Church just off the Square in downtown Madison.
When: 6:30 pm on the second Wednesday of every odd Month
September 14, 2016
November 9, 2016
How: There is a sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board outside of the Friendship Room.
There you can volunteer to bring different food items or serve the meal.
Again, we want to say thanks for the food, towels, service, clothing, and for the funding you all
provide. This is an ongoing need and from time to time funding is necessary to offset the cost for
the main dish. If anyone can or would like to donate, please let the church office know. Any amount
is very much appreciated. We would also like to encourage the use of disposable food containers to
ensure that nothing is lost along the way. For our youth members, this is an excellent way to
earn service hours.
Most importantly we would ask that you keep these less fortunate people in your prayers, especially
those who are entering at a seemingly younger age. This will make a difference in their lives. This
program needs your support more now than ever. Please make an effort to help this ministry
continue!
If you would like to participate by bringing food or clothing items or if you would like to help serve
the meal, please contact Gregg or Beth Steinhauer at 846-3588.
Looking for Ushers & Ambassadors
Do you love our church? Would you be interested in
showing visitors around and telling them about us? Are
you interested in helping out occasionally during our
worship services? We need you! Please give the
church office a call at 846-4718 for more information.
Christ Lutheran Choir Update
The Christ Lutheran Choir will resume practices beginning September 7, 2016 at 7:30pm in the
Friendship Room. If you are interested in joining our choir, please contact Neil McLaughlin at
neimcl@gmail.com.
Dear Friends in Christ,
I want to provide you with updates regarding some important projects at Christ Lutheran Church.
As I write this letter, the Call Committee is preparing to interview another candidate for the Associate
Pastor position. We have been actively working with the South Central Wisconsin ELCA Synod
office to identify potential candidates and to assess each one to determine if their gifts and talents
match the needs of Christ Lutheran Church. This process has taken longer than any of us could have
imagined. However, we have learned that it is not a process to be rushed. It is important to
thoroughly evaluate each individual and even more important is to be open to working together to
discern God’s will.
I feel like a child at Christmas as I watch the progress being made in the development of the new
Sunday School program. An updated rotational curriculum has been selected, rooms are being
cleaned and painted, and supplies, equipment and furniture are arriving every day. Registration is
open for children and volunteers. It seems like we are waiting to open a long awaited
present. The new program will be unveiled on September 18th
at an open house and rededication
of the education center.
I hope that everyone will take the time to come upstairs and see the new program and the work that
has been done to clean and refurbish the education center. It is also exciting that the Center is
being designed so that rooms can be multi-functional and serve the needs of children and adults
alike.
As you have all heard, we hosted Vacation Bible School during the first week of August. 196 children
participated in the program called Expedition Norway. I was struck by how seamlessly the children
and volunteers from 4 churches worked together to share the word of God and learn about Norway.
A theme this year was “God is Good”. All of the children from preschool to 6th
grade absorbed that
message and rocked the rafters of the Christ Lutheran Church declaring that God is Good. It was
truly amazing.
Final measurements are being taken for the new windows that were approved at the Congregational
Meeting in July and it is anticipated that they will be installed early this fall. The Property
Committee and Design Committee are looking at new designs for the doors without stain glass. We
will share information about the designs and costs with you in the near future.
And finally, I want to remind you all that in September many of our ministries will be turning to all of
you to ask your participation in serving the Lord: God’s Work Our Hands, Tool Box Sunday, Habitat
for Humanity, Grace Meals, Member Care, Choir, Adult Education, Sunday School, and Confirmation.
And very shortly we will begin planning for the Lutefisk Dinner in November! Please consider
volunteering.
In His Service,
Jane Cahill Wolfgram, Council President
