Welcome : CAPT Kathryn M. Beasley, USN (Ret)

President’s Message — BG William (Bill) Marshall, USA, RET

The month of May as always causes us to

reflect as we approach a solemn time when

we remember those who have provided us

the freedoms that we enjoy each and every

day. It is a day that for us makes it all worth

the dedication, selfless service and the bond

that unites those who have served and are

serving albeit a day for some, a lifetime for

others. Please join me this Memorial Day in

rededicating our efforts to support those

great Patriots who serve in our Armed Forces.

Recently some of us from the Chapter attend-

ed the Annual Business meeting of the Essex

Troop Association and a guest speaker pro-

vided us some insight into his service during

World War II. T/SGT Archie Fagan is 90 years

young and led us on his journey from High

School to being drafted, taking basic training

and technical school to the replacement de-

pot that brought him into the 3rd U.S. Army

under the Command of General George S.

Patton.

A tall, slender gentleman T/SGT Fagan’s

story was related to us with exuberant energy

and packed with those facts only a GI would

remember to recount to an audience that

was on the edge of their chairs and waited in

anticipation of what would be the next epi-

sode from this veteran who upon returning

home graduated from the Wharton School at

the University of Pennsylvania.

He recounted his assignment to the 66th

Armored Battalion of the 4th Armored Divi-

sion where he was a Signalman and joined

after the “Battle of the Bulge”. He spoke Ger-

man and was an important link in developing

intelligence at the tactical level and eventual-

ly being assigned to the G2 shop at 3rd Army

Headquarters. He was at Dachau and spoke

with the detainees there and had vivid mem-

ories of the atrocities that were related to

him.

Prior to his returning home he was

asked if he would be an observer at the

Nuremberg Trial and he accepted and

this is where I and all gathered were

impressed at how sharp was this sol-

diers memory as he went through those

who were on trial and he pointed to

chairs and placed a name of an ac-

cused on each “Goering sat there” and

then so on and so on. He personified

what we have defined as the “Greatest

Generation” and spoke without a single

note for over 45 minutes. He still works
