Outline• Introduction• Classification

• Healing Mechanism• Benefits• Challenges• Application• Conclusion

– Intrinsic Self-healing– Extrinsic Self-healing

Introduction

– Tremendous engineering application of polymers– Long-term durability and reliability are still

problematic– Damage at microscopic level is difficult to

perceive or cure– Self-healing in animals and plants– Work in progress to integrate self-healing

capability into polymers

Classification

• Intrinsic Self-Healing– Polymer have ability to heal crack by themselves

• Extrinsic Self-Healing– Healing agent have to be pre-embedded

Intrinsic Self-Healing

– Specific performance of polymer matrices enables self-healing under certain simulation

– Simulation may be of heat, light, mechanical forces etc.

– Autonomic healing is not developed for the time being

*Based on physical interaction

*Based on chemical interaction

Intrinsic Self-Healing

Extrinsic Self-Healing

– Matrix resin itself is not healable one– Healing agent has to encapsulated and

embedded in the material– During crack growth, it destroy fragile capsule– Healing agent rises in crack due to capillary effect

and heal the crack

•Based on healant loaded pipeline→ Hollow glass tubes and glass fibers

Extrinsic Self-Healing

Benefits

– Improving product safety and reliability and to extend product lifetimes.

– Improved toughness– Reduced waste disposal– Building sustainable society

Challenges

– Cost of manufacturing of such material– Storage of healing agent inside the material for a

long period of time– Initiation of healing– Healing agent should strongly bound with material

and be stable

Application

– Transportation– Military– Medical dental/artificial body replacements– Electronics– Paints, Coatings, and Adhesives– Civil construction– Sporting Goods

Conclusion

– Achievements in field of self-healing polymer are far from satisfactory

– It provide wide range of opportunity for future development of polymeric material

– For the moment extrinsic self-healing technique is easier for large scale usage

– For long term view, synthesis of new polymer accompanied by intrinsic self-healing and automatic trigger would be reasonable solution
