menu the balloting for vice paeMdentbegan at a late hour Saturday nightand Henry O Davie of West Virginiawoe nominated by acclamation On thefirst ballot he received 652 votes only

16 short of the necessary twothirdsThis was Increased by changes to a

number sufficient to nominate and on

motion of Gov Beckham the nomina ¬

tlon was made unanimousJudge Parker a short while after his

nomination sent a telegram to the can ¬

ventlon stating that he regarded thegold standard as fixed and authorizingW F Sheehan to decline the nomina ¬

tion for him If his views were not sane ¬

factory to the convention After a con ¬

ference of leaders a reply was preparedand presented to the convention for Itsadoption stating that there Is nothing
