Although self- portraits have been made by

artists since the earliest

times, it is not until the early

Renaissance in the mid 15th century, that artists can be frecuently identified depicting

themselves as either the main subject, or as

LAS MENINAS

important characters included in a larger work, or a group portrait

Women who worked as artists were usually painters´ daughters, so they taught them the profession, but

normally they were not admitted in Art Schools or Academies, so they had to paint without

living models. So it was difficult for them to paint historical, mythical or religious compositions.

As a result of this, they focused on

portraits . And they understood self- portraits, as a way to revindicate

their value as artists.

Anyway, both men and women used to paint themselves as you have seen.

In fact there are some artists that made a lot of self portraits, as REMBRANDT:

ELISABETH VIGEÉ LEBRUN

DURERO

And there are artists who based their

pictorical works on their portraits, for example FRIDA KHALO:

VINCENT VAN GOGH

And CINDY SHERMAN

• Why did these three artists represented themselves so many times?

• All of them have chosen this gender to communicate and give their messagges through art, but why?

• Each one has different reasons.

• Now you have to look for information about their lives, and prepare a Powerpoint or Photostory explaining those reasons. (work in small groups).

• You will have to present it to the class.• Remember to mention: 1. why you choose this artist, 2. which is your favourite painting and explain its

meaning, or what colors are employed to paint it , and the moment of the artist´s life when it was made…(each member of the team has to explain it in class)
