WHAT IS SELF ESTEEM?Self esteem refers to a positive overall

evaluation of oneself – a feeling that one is competent to cope with life’s challenges and

worthy of happiness

Self concept is what we think

about ourselves

Self esteem is what we feel

about ourselves

and make choices that are worthy of esteem.

Person establishes a goal

Person pursues the goal

Person develops esteem-like feelings

Be aware of personal strengths

Minimize settings and interactions that detract from your feelings of competence

Talk and socialize frequently with people who boost your self esteem.

Model the behaviour of people with high self esteem.

SELF CONFIDENCE

Self confidence is assuredness in one’s personal judgement and abilities.

Self efficacy refers to confidence in one’s ability to carry out a specific task.

SELF CONFIDENCE and SELF EFFICACY

Self confidence results from 5 sources of information:

1. Personal experiences, or things we have done.

2. The experiences of others, or modeling.

3. Social comparison.

Sources of Self Confidence

4. Social persuasion – the process of convincing another person.

5. Emotional arousal – how you feel about events around you and how you manage your emotions.

Sources of Self Confidence

1. Take an inventory of personal assets and accomplishments.

2. Develop a solid knowledge base.

3. Use positive self-talk.

4. Avoid negative self talk
