SECTION 2 - OPERATION
1. INSTALLATION
1.1 GENERAL
The Mode 4/Mode S Test System is a bench test set requir ing cont inuous ac power to operate. Mode 4/Mode S Test System instal lat ion includes connect ing the SI-1404 Test Auxi l iary with the ATC-1400A Transponder/DME Test Set, powering up the system and accomplishing an instal lat ion cal ibrat ion.
1.2 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The fol lowing safety precautions must be observed dur ing instal lat ion and operat ion. IFR Systems, Inc. assumes no l iabi l i ty for fai lure to comply with any safety precaution out l ined in this manual.
1.2.1 Complying with Instructions
Instal lat ion/operat ing personnel should not attempt to instal l or operate the Mode 4/ Mode S Test System without reading and complying with instruct ions contained in this manual. Al l procedures contained in this manual must be performed in exact sequence and manner descr ibed.
1.2.2 Grounding Equipment and Power Cord
WARNING: DO NOT USE A THREE-PRONG TO TWO-PRONG ADAPTER PLUG. DOING SO CREATES A SHOCK HAZARD BETWEEN THE CHASSIS AND ELECTRICAL GROUND.
The power cord, equipped with standard three-prong plug, must be connected to a proper ly grounded three-prong receptacle. I t is the customer 's responsibi l i ty to:
● Have a qual i f ied electr ic ian check receptacle(s) for proper grounding.
● Replace any standard two-prong receptacle(s) with proper ly grounded three-prong receptacle(s) .
1.2.3 Operating Safety
Due to potent ial for electr ical shock within test equipment, Test Set covers must not be removed by operators. The Instal lat ion Cal ibrat ion, Procedure, component replacement and internal adjustments must only be performed by qual i f ied service personnel. Refer to the Instal lat ion Cal ibrat ion Procedure or Mode 4/Mode S Test System Maintenance Manual (1002-2401-400) for maintenance procedures.
1.2.4 CAUTION and WARNING Labels
Exercise extreme care when performing operat ions preceded by a CAUTION or W ARNING label. CAUTION labels appear where possibi l i ty of damage to equipment exists. W ARNING labels denote condit ions where bodi ly injury or death may result .

1.3 POWER REQUIREMENTS
The Mode 4/Mode S Test System operates over a voltage range of 100 to 120 VAC at 60 Hz or 220 to 240 VAC at 50 Hz. No internal wir ing changes are required before applying ac power to the Test Auxi l iary. The VOLTAGE SELECT Switch sett ing on SI-1404 rear panel must match the input l ine voltage. Instantaneous surge current at power up is ≤50 A. The specif ied fuse rat ings are l is ted in 1-2-1, Table 1.
CAUTION: FOR CONTINUOUS PROTECTION AGAINST FIRE, REPLACE ONLY W ITH FUSES OF THE SPECIFIED VOLTAGE AND CURRENT RATINGS.

1.5 POWER-UP PROCEDURE
The Mode 4/Mode S Test System is conf igured for one-touch power control . W hen the ATC-1400A POW ER Switch is ON ( I) , the SI-1404 POW ER Switch controls power to the SI-1404 Test Auxi l iary and ATC-1400A Transponder/DME Test Set.
STEP PROCEDURE 1. Connect ac power cable to SI-1404
AC IN Connector and standard 3-pin grounded power receptacle.
2. Press ATC-1400A POW ER Switch ON ( I) .
3. Press SI-1404 POW ER Switch ON ( I) to energize Test Auxi l iary and ATC-1400A.
4. Ver i fy ATC-1400A Displays i l luminate.
5. Ver i fy SI-1404 MENU Display shows an act ive screen.
1.6 INSTALLATION CALIBRATION
Before operat ion, the Mode 4/Mode S Test System requires cal ibrat ion according to the Instal lat ion Cal ibrat ion Procedure. Any t ime the SI-1404 or ATC-1400A is replaced, another instal lat ion cal ibrat ion should be performed (only by qual i f ied service personnel) to maintain measurement accuracy.
1.7 EXTERNAL CLEANING
The fol lowing procedure contains rout ine instruct ions for c leaning the outs ide of the Test Set.
CAUTION: DISCONNECT POW ER FROM TEST SET TO AVOID POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS.
STEP PROCEDURE 1. Clean f ront panel, switches and
display face with sof t l int- f ree c loth. I f dir t is di f f icul t to remove, dampen cloth with water and a mild l iquid detergent.
2. Remove grease, fungus and ground- in dir t f rom surfaces with sof t l int- f ree c loth dampened (not soaked) with isopropyl alcohol.
3. Remove dust and dir t f rom connectors with sof t-br is t led brush.
4. Cover connectors, not in use, with suitable dust cover to prevent tarnishing of connector contacts.
5. Clean cables with sof t l int- f ree c loth.
6. Paint exposed metal surface to avoid corrosion.
